Amid the hubbub of Blind Tiger's "Vermont Beer & Cheese Festival" I noticed the Chelsea handle sticking up from one of the cask pumps. Boy, am I glad I did. This blend of three vintage Chelsea stouts ain't from Vermont, but as far am I'm concerned Old Black Boot steals the show.

Served in a tulip glass, this stout arrives with a big, frothy head which is somewhere between the color of hot chocolate and molasses. As the bubbles burst the head appears to slowly sizzle away. The liquid itself is a completely opaque black. Oily, sparsely spotty lacing remains on the glass as I drink. The rather faint scent is of dark chocolate and some hops.

I take a sip and every other stout I've tasted drops a notch in my estimation. It's like drinking dark chocolate without the unpleasant bitterness. Smooth, foamy and wonderful, this beer has a slight undercurrent of butterscotch behind its creamy chocolatiness. It's so good that it breaks my heart to think that this will be one of my last glasses. I hope Chris makes more stuff like this soon. In the meantime, I plan to enjoy as much of this lone cask as I can.
