I don’t mean to be unnecessarily cruel but this was the second Chelsea beer I tried and my impressions of the brewery are unfavorably to put it mildly. Maybe it’s not fair to have this beer an hour after drinking a Hill Farmstead IPA but that’s immaterial. This is a poorly made example of the style and that’s simply how I feel.

The appearance of the beer is fine; it’s a lightly hazed, gold bodied brew with a small cap of slowly settling foam and decent lace. Aroma is decidedly lacking however; I sniffed and sniffed but got little except some mildly sweet malt and a trace of floral and citrus hops. Had to really strain to get much at all. The flavor confirms the nose; there’s more malt here, with some bready and caramel notes, and the faintest citrus and floral hop flavors underneath. But it’s quite bland and uninteresting.

The body is medium and the carbonation feels a little low. It’s somewhat smooth and creamy but lacks crispness and a clean feel.

“Hop Angel?” Sorry but color me unconvinced. This isn’t gonna cut it guys.

Reviewed on 8/15/08. Gravity keg at Blind Tiger. Pours a clear orange with no head. Aroma of bitter hops and pale malt. Flavor of light wheat, some fruits, grassy hops, faint bitter finish. It's pretty bland though with a very watery, weak palate. I don't think that gravity keg was a good way to serve this beer because the mouthfeel is just awful without carbonation for this beer. I'd pass on this next time.

well hoped but either infected barrel or two high a fermenting temperature. nose is mild hop honey hinted. palate is earthy bitter and a banana pelt that won't subside. dingy elmer's glue. at least its crisp. this is totally infected. had half a pint and dumped the rest of the growler.

Also had on tap at House of Brews--- I wonder if something went wrong with their keg. This beer was thin, bitter in the wrong way, limited head. I drank it immediately after finishing a Gnommegang, which is a much more complex beer, so maybe I had a bad experience because of that, but overall, I was quite disappointed.

Had this beer at NYC Beer Company. Served in a pint glass cool.

Pours a light brown and clear body with an off white head.

Smells floral and light. Taste is refreshing, pine, cereal, light lemon notes. Light body.

Very sessionable and a nice beer. I would drink this beer again.

Sampled on cask (gravity) at the Blind Tiger in NYC.

Gold with good clarity and a faint head of large and resilient bubbles. The aroma was yeasty with piney hops. The flavor had a misguided bitterness and not a lot to support it. The malts were pretty bare and there wasn't much for hop flavor. They said it had been tapped within the last day so it shouldn't be age. The mouthfeel was average and the carbonation was as you'd expect from a cask.

There wasn't a lot to this beer. I was excited to see a gravity option but was disappointed in the end result.

First had: on tap at House of Brews, NYC, NY

A pretty standard and non-distinctive IPA. Poured a light golden brown with little to no head. Nose of light citrusy hops, and a similar taste. Not very strong in any regard, thus a bit disappointing. Light mouthfeel with a mildly bitter aftertaste. Sub-moderate drinkablility.

1/2 growler filled about 4 days ago at Whole Foods in NYC.

A - Poured a yellow orange gold with a thin shiny bubbly head that dissipated rather quickly. Lacing was really slippery, but left subtle hints of its presence on the side of the glass.

S - Hops up front but not overbearingly so. Touch of lemon and orange as well. A bit citric and a tad funky.

T - Very hoppy and bitter. The hops are way more upfront in the flavor. This one seems to be all hops. Even a bit overly hoppy for an IPA. I'd prefer a bit more balance and taming back the hops.

M - Kind of watery. Finishes off pretty bitter, but not dry.

D - This is one for the hop-heads...which I am not. Don't mind a hoppy beer every now and then, but not my thing. I don't mind finishing off the growler, but to me, nothing really great about this beer to make me seek it out. So many IPAs are just hops explosions and this is just like that for me. Probably a great beer for some and certainly worth a try.

On tap at the brewery. Well hopped, medium mouthfeel. Lace on the way down the glass. Aggressive carbonation with everything I had at the brewery, maybe it is better served elsewhere, and this IPA is a popular one about town, and the hops were tasty. Amber orange colour. Best hoppy aroma. Dry finish. Had again almost 4 years later At House of Beers and found the hoppyness, the taste, somewhat muted by carbonation. Could not finish, and dry. Weak for style.
