Notes / Commercial Description:
As dark as the legend of Blackbeerd himself, behold the Imperial Stout. Sweet malts battle roasted grain on the decks of yer tongue. Like a blast from a cannon, hop are followed by smoked malt. Hold on to yer booty, a dark stouts a brewin'.

This Blackbeerd aged one year in 2nd use Blanton's barrels. As to be expected it is more oak and less bourbon. Still delicious.

22oz bottle into a snifter
Bottled on: 11/25/13

A: Opaque black, with only slight browning on the edges. Just under 1 fingers width of dark mocha colored head builds, then fades fairly quickly. Leaves a few small patches of lacing.

S: Huge aroma. At first I get lots of dark fruit aromas, accompanied by dark chocolate and roasted malt. Then the barrel notes come out, lots of oak and mild bourbon. I also get a bit of booze and cinnamon.

T: Earthy/herbaceous, roasted malt, bitter black coffee, bakers chocolate, subtle booze. Lots of oak, only very subtle bourbon notes, and the barrel characters as a whole are a lot less prominent in this years version compared to last.

M/D: Full bodied, chewy mouthfeel, very smooth, moderate carbonation. Drinkability is very good.

O: Overall, another excellent beer from COAST. I think I prefer the smack-you-in-the-face bourbon characters of the 2012 version, to the more subtle bourbon notes from the second use barrels in this years version. That being said, this one is still excellent.

This is my kind of stout. Much drier than folks seem to love these days but I tend to prefer that. Much more lively and drinkable for it. The head and carbonation on this are surprisingly strong for an imperial stout; like the froth on a cappucino. The shift to Blanton's is perhaps part of my love for this. The tobacco, honey, spice, and fudgey notes come through. This has always been a stout driven by various chocolate notes but this one is the most vanilla and fudge dominant.

Consuming this 2013 vintage immediately after enjoying the 2012 bottling which was aged in the same barrels.

Bomber into a wine glass appears black in color with a khaki cap that fades leaving a thin film across the top.

Aroma is roasted and more smoked feeling than its older sibling but minorly so. Raison and fruity alcohol notes lead the way with a raw woodiness noticed and a bit of black licorice mixed with chocolate.

Taste is black licorice heavy with raison and fruity alcohol. Slight espresso/roasty chocolate. Initially there was quite a raw oak presence but that seemingly completely dissolved away to almost no barrel feel left in this brew. Only as it warms does it leave a lingering raw oak spiciness.

Medium in body with modest carbonation. In comparing this to the older version, they both are great imperial stouts with their own unique character. However, this one doesnt have the depth of barrel nuance like its predecessor. Instead, it showcases more of the raw edge of the barrel and base beer. Good in its own right but I believe if given the choice id go for the first usage barrel treatment instead of the second...but that decision is tough to make because I liked the smoked integration in this one that was masked in the other.

Bottled on 11/25/13 and poured into a Westbrook snifter....

A: Black with just a 1/2 head that slowly fades. Very nice lacing.

S: The bourbon hits first and then you get a good dose of oak and chocolate.

T: The oak and chocolate take center stage here, while the bourbon in the background gives this beer such a balanced taste.

M: Very smooth, which is dangerous because the ABV is well hidden.

O: Fantastic local beer! This is the first 'Blackbeerd' that I have had and am looking forward to to trying the 2012 version with the stronger bourbon taste.
