Bottled April 1, 2015

L - Pours a nice black body with light coming through the edges. The one finger tan head sticks around but doesn't leave much lacing.

S - Roasted malts, rye spices, cocoa powder, molasses and vanilla. Well balanced.

T - Big taste of bittersweet chocolate at first. Molasses and vanilla come in the middle. Rye spices aren't shy and show up on the ending to carry to the finish.

F - Medium bodied and low carbonation. For the abv, I wasn't expecting it to be super thick.

O - Super enjoyable and very balanced BA stout. The rye barrels really keep it interesting.

22oz bottle into a snifter
Bottled on: 4/1/15

A: Opaque black, 1.5 fingers width of light mocha colored head, pretty good retention before dissipating down, but only leaves a few small patches of lacing. 4.25

S: Roasty, chocolate, leather, cinnamon, toasted coconut, barrel notes with charred oak and bourbony booze. Wonderful nose. 4.5

T: Wonderful. Love how the barrel notes compliment the base beer. Tons of chocolate, oaky vanilla, a nutty like character, more subtle leather/tobacco characters, charred oak, roasty, subtle coffee like bitterness. Just fantastic. 4.75

M/D: Full bodied, carbonation appropriately low, a great silky smoothness, ABV is well masked, drinkability is good. 4.5

O: Great beer from top to bottom. Maybe my favorite BA Blackbeerd to date (neck and neck with ’12). I don’t know of any beer that barrel aging compliments better than Blackbeerd. One of the top handful of beers I’ve had this year to date. 4.75

650 mL bottle. Bottled 4/1/2015. Black body with a medium khaki head. Roasted malt and molasses aroma without much barrel. Taste has much more whiskey flavor. You can even get some of the rye flavor. Sweetness then roasted malt. Some molasses and dark fruits in the finish, Heavy. Well carbonated. Light barrel, but the base stout is surprisingly good, considering I don't remember loving it in the past.

2015 Bomber poured into a snifter

Look - Magnificently black with a very small amount of light tan head. The light tan head is quite aesthetically pleasing, but would be even more so if there were more of it.

Smell - Smells like a mixture of sweet chocolate and bourbon

Taste - Chocolate is the dominant taste with a slight amount of dark fruit present as well (this only becomes apparent to me when I got to the halfway point). A sweeter chocolate than the regular blackbird which had a more bitter cocoa taste to it. I think i sense a little smokiness as well. The sweetness of the initial taste leads perfectly into the mild sweetness of the whiskey. The whiskey doesn't linger long, and it's definitely not a strong taste but it combines with the smoke and seems to produce an oaky-vanilla like finish that leaves your mouth a little bit sticky. Very fun beer.

Feel - Almost a contradiction. Not super thick and a little too carbonated for my liking, but in between sips the taste lingers strongly in my mouth for a very long time.

Overall: Pretty mild as far as BA stouts go, but that's not a bad thing. Simple but effective, and the smokiness as well as being aged in rye whiskey barrels add an element most BA stouts do not have.
