not at all a bad beer, but i dont think its the best representation of the kolsch style, and i am very surprised to see it reviewed so favorably here, especially for a style like this, where the purist opinion always seems to be the most popular one. this is anything but, far more heavy and malty than most kolsch types i have encountered, its almost heavy, and more toasted on the grain front than the light pale clear beer i am used to crushing glass after glass. clear still, but a shade closer to caramel than yellow, full fluffy head. smells and taste cerealy, not as clean and light, not sweet necessarily, but a little bready, especially with the yeast on top of it, not as crisp. its good though, and its still very drinkable, but compared to what i look for and expect in the style, this is a little too americanized. the hops are nice in the finish though, i appreciate that, floral and bitter at the same time, seemingly very fresh as well. good carbonation but more body than i think the style allows for. good not great, still mixed opinions on these guys across the few of their beers i have had so far...

COD 5/26/16. Golden pour that is crystal clear. World class head volume, lacing and quite outstanding retention.

Outstanding nose of light lemon, pale and biscuit malt, very light floral hops and hints of wheat.

Light medium body that is smooth and a bit slick. Outstanding carbonation / body balance that is mildly effervescent in the middle and prickly in the finish.

The flavor profile is quite outstanding. It begins with a subtly tart weak lemon note that morphs into grainy wheat over subtle biscuit. The middle is slightly sweet and is contrasted with a very subtle floral bitterness. The finish is clean and somewhat crisp. A soft note of honey lingers.

12 ounce can into a pilsner glass.

Damn this beer is good. Beautiful looking golden/straw-colored body with a tinge of haze. Shows a finger of foamy, pale white head.

Smells of sweet, French bread and light honey. Light earthy floral hints.

Taste is much like the nose. Sweet, bready malt with a hint of earthy honey and floral bouquet. Simple, straight-forward, but delicious.

Light, refreshing, clean, rich, a healthily restrained sweetness. Excellent all around.

This is damn good.

On tap at 5 church, poured into a stange.

A - golden, cloudy orange with a half finger head. Moves to thin lace quickly, with good lace retention on the side of the glass.

S - mild banana/clove and spices. Grains/wheat.

T - very clean and crisp. Mainly the grains and mild banana/pepper notes come through. You also get some wine/grape like qualities on the finish.

M - medium carbonation, slightly smooth, medium light feel.

O - recommended Kolsch.

Served on-tap in a Shaker pint at Five Loaves (Charleston, SC).

A: Clear honey-gold with short rim of off-white head which leaves a few lines of squiggly lacing.

S: Pale pils maltiness with light floral, herbal hopping with light bready yeast

T: Crisp and clean pils maltiness with Bready and light lemony hop character.

M: Light-bodied with moderate carbonation and crisp light feel.

O: An easy-drinking enjoyable Kolsch with classic character.

A: The beer is crystal clear yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high bright white head that quickly died down, leaving a patch of bubbles on the surface and a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of cracker malts are present in the nose along with some hints of green grapes and lemon citrus.
T: The taste has flavors of cracker and wheat malts along with notes of green grapes and hints of lemons.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is a touch of dryness in the finish.
O: This beer seems a little lighter in body compared to other Kölsch beers, so it would make for a refreshing choice during the summer months.

Appearance - Nice yellow color, bubbly white head.

Smell - The lime notes come through nicely. Grains notes can also be detected.

Taste - The lines, pleasantly tart, jump to the front in the aftertaste. Dry grain notes lay a nice backbone, that shows contrast. The smooth mouthfeel shows the lime fading in the aftertaste and the grains standing taller.

Mouthfeel - Smooth normally does not describe a kolsch, but there it is. Carbonation is big, but that's the style.

Overall - This is a world class kolsch.

The beer has a clear pale yellow color. The aroma is lemon and german malt. The taste is lemon, spice, wheat, light bitterness. Very refreshing kolsch. The best american example of the style I've had

I'm a neophyte beer rater, but I really enjoy Kolsches and this one holds up pretty well compared to my favorite, Alaska's Summer Kolsch.
