32 oz growler poured into a pint glass at fridge-cellar temperature.

L – Hazy amber-brown color with a 1-finger foamy cream-colored head. Nice retention and some good lacing. I wish it was a little clearer.

S – Caramel, toffee, molasses, and toasted malts along with herbal hops and citrus esters/hops.

T – Sweet most of the way through with caramel, toffee, molasses, and some citrus esters, developing to nutty and toasted malt. Finishes up with a bitter spicy, herbal, and possibly citrus hop finish.

F – Medium-bodied with great carbonation, a sticky and creamy mouthfeel, and a pleasantly bitter and dry finish. Noble hop spicy and herbal hop bitterness lingers with a touch of the sweet citrus esters/hops.

O – This is my first altbier experience, and it was a tasty one. From what I’ve read, this fits the style terrifically. There’s a big and sweet malt presence that is adequately balanced by spicy and herbal noble hops. The mouthfeel is fantastic. Really the only thing I would improve is the clarity of the beer. Overall, this is a very tasty and drinkable beer. Another solid, solid beer from COAST.

64oz growler poured into a Pint Glass.

Poured a hazy dark copper-brown with a creamy ivory head that settles to a fluffy cap and leaves sheets of lacing. Sweet, malty aromas of caramel, roasted nuts, chocolate, and just a touch of citrus. Taste follows the nose closely, nice flavors of chocolate, nuts, caramel malt, and wheat with a fairly long-lasting, bitter finish. There's a touch of spiciness in here that adds a nice layer of complexity. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, with a touch-over-medium body and good, crisp carbonation. Very drinkable, this would be easily sessionable if the ABV was a touch lower. Overall another solidly delicious from COAST, glad to knock this one off the list finally!

On draft at Coleman Public House
5oz sampler as part of a flight

A: amber, crystal clear, not much head or lacing
S: very malty, smokey, a touch fruity
T: follows the nose; malty and smokey, burnt grass, roasty.
M: full body, crisp and clean for a heavier beer
O: I'm not huge into German styles but this one is quite tasty and well worth the drink

Growler filled from the wondrous CBX. Filled 7/29, drank right the heck up on 9/11. Still perfectly carbonated. Split with 2 other BA buds in cooling-off Columbia, SC.

A. Clear and rusty, fine 2 inch white head that falls to just cover the top. Spotty, low lace. Some active carbonation. A very pretty beer.

S. Mellow and toasty malts, some fruityness, slightly sour and acidic malts, lemon?, maybe some dates, very clean. Good malt presence here, restrained, yet inviting.

T. Smooth and tender malt profile blends through a subtle hop btterness and fruity, rich sweetness. This is good. Simple, decent, unsurprising, clean, and good. A friend said nutty and is right, and there's a little dank earthiness to keep things interesting.

M. Crisp, malty-nutful, medium carbonation, lightly bitter and malty sweet finish, pleasing, massively quaffable.

D. Oh yes. I had no trouble killing the growler in short order with friends. I want more.

ALTerior Motive is a great American take on an Alt, with a character that belies the sum of its parts. I like this one, and (like all COAST brews), it's super clean and tasty. Go get some Alt beer.

Poured into a Dogfish signature snifter. Label says Bottled On: 09 10 14

A- Pours a dark amber color with a 1/4 inch off-white head that retains a bit before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a half sheet of sheer surface foam. Minimal lacing.

S- Toasty, bready malt with some light hop fume.

T- Nice balanced flavor of toasty malt and just enough hop bitterness. So drinkable and clean yet flavorful. Makes me want to keep taking sips.

M- Slight bite from the hops with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.

O- Someone once told me that an altbier is intended to be somewhere between an ale and lager. If that's true, this one hits the nail on the head. Has the crispness and easygoing nature of a lager while maintaining the solid flavor of an ale. I'm confused though. This beer has a current score of 79, yet the majority of full reviews are above a 4.25 rating. I feel this is a prime example of those who know their shit giving a full review of a lesser-known style a good rating vs. those who just tick for the sake of ticking giving a bad score because they don't know what an altbier is supposed to be like.

Pours: A deep red with very little head

Smell: Some grapefruit in the beginning then leading into a good amount of ester. Lightly toasted malts round it out.

Taste: They did a really good job of balancing the flavors of the hops and malts. I get a good amount of ester from the hops losing the grapefruit I got in the nose. The malt is just strong enough to give you a little sweetness and then it finishes with a little bit of pine.
