Poured from the growler into my Sam Adams perfect pint glass. Growler from Piney Grove Green's

A - hazy brown at the bottom turns almost black at the top. Big tan head rests on top

S - Holy moly this is one hoppy beer. Big juicy citrus aromas with a hint of pine and tropical notes. A hint of sweetness but that gets pummeled by another wave of hoppy aroma.

T - Follows the aroma with a nice citrus hop taste. A bit of piney bitterness at the end. I dunno I'm not picking up on much roasted malt or chocolatey malt flavor. Taste more like a really hoppy IPA.

M - medium bodied, kinda smooth, a fair amoun of carbonation

D - Pretty drinkable. Not the best CDA around though. I really like it when I can pick up more roasted notes. Still a solid beer and certainly enjoyable.

Appearance: Arrives cola colored with tawny highlights; a magnificent head tops the liquid; swathes of lacing linger

Smell: Piney hop tones are buttressed by the roasted malt aromatics

Taste: The roasted malt tones jut forward with the piney hop aspect building through the middle; the bitterness continues to build, after the swallow and into the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A pretty nice example of a style that is often mishandled

A: Pours an opaque though still clear very dark cola brown in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation and a hint of amber + reddish brown highlights. The beer has a half finger tall foamy beige head that reduces to a medium sized patch of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of piney hops over moderate roasty malts.

T: Upfront there is a moderate to strong flavor of roasted malts with minimal amounts of sweetness. That is followed by slightly stronger than moderate flavors of pine hops. Overall there is a moderate to slightly stronger than moderate amount of lingering bitterness that is a combination of hoppy and roasty.

M: Slightly fuller than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Hints of dryness in the finish.

O: One of the better Black IPAs I've enjoyed (not always my favorite style as there is less variation than other IPA styles). Enjoyable but more of a sipping beer than an easy drinker.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a short tan head that died down a bit, leaving a thin layer of bubbles on the surface and a collar of medium-sized bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of piney hops are present in the nose along with hints of roasted malts.
T: The taste follows the smell, but has flavors of roasted malts to accompany notes of piney hops. There is a moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and quite crisp and dry on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This Black IPA really packs in some bite from the dryness of the roasted malts and the bitterness from the piney hops.
