MoonJuice IPAMoonJuice IPA
Notes: A wheat IPA that features hops from our friends in the southern hemisphere (Galaxy and Nelson Sauvin). Almost 40% wheat malt, but is fermented, hopped, dry-hopped, and filtered like a west coast style IPA. The wheat makes it a very satiable beer and the aroma will carry loads of citrus and tropical fruit.

True golden in color. Lots of head, I dropped the 12pk on the way in the house... Very clear.

Smell is pineapple, apple, sour sweet fruit. Very little malt sweetness.

Very interesting. Pineapple and tropical fruit. Grain takes a backseat. Finishes with aggressive bitterness. It rounds it out very well. Without the bitterness I would not be loving it.

Solid carbonation bite. Alcohol is hiding 7.3% in there but you would never know it. Kind of a slick, oily mouthfeel.

I really like this. The hops are very tropical and the bitterness is right on point to make me want to keep going. Very nice beer and interesting hop flavor/aroma.

Poured from a can into a pint glass. Pours orange yellow with a small white head. Smells of citrus hops with a little bit of sweet grain. Tastes of citrus and piney hops with decent barley sweetness. Beer is light bodied and easy drinking, good carbonation. Overall, a very good beer.

Great beer. I have been kind of bummed by AZ IPA's, so this was very refreshing. Poured deep gold-very slightly amber, slight head that simmers into a thin white lacing. Smell is citrusy, tiny bit of white grape aroma. Taste is by far the best part of the beer, the Galaxy and NS do a great job of complementing each other, which is super impressive considering the strong characteristics of each beer. I find that when I use either in my beers one tends to slightly dominate the other, so well done. Passionfruit, slight pineapple, hint of bitterness, basically an all-around rich and satisfying beer that can't be explained by listing exact fruit comparisons, but is it's own thing from the blend of tropical hops. Mouthfeel is on point for an IPA using wheat in the grist. One thing I am kind of confused about is that the company decided to filter the beer with 40% wheat malt? This would have been a more fulfilling beer had it remained hazy, but I think AZ has yet to hop on the hazy train. Overall, this is the best IPA i've had in AZ.

Poured into a pint glass: color is gold, transparent, light carbonation, head presents with off white color and is 1 finger thick on first pour.

Smell is slightly tropical fruit hop oriented at first, then melds with citrus and some earthy notes.

Taste is similar with light hop flavors of tropical fruit, tangerine like citrus, and then some earthy hops; wheat is noticeable after some warmth and in the presence of the flavors.

Mouthfeel is not too bitter for its strength, hops are present in the flavor and aroma but the wheat performs as intended to soften this ipa.

Overall a good wheat forward ipa, i think it could withstand more bittering hops. Reminds me of a stronger flying fish extra pale ale with a variant on the hop profile.

Look - Poured from a 12 oz can. Solid three finger head, straw yellow in color.
Smell - citrus and tropical fruit scents, detectable but not overly strong.
Taste - mellow in flavor. tropical fruit flavors come through, though the beer has a malty finish. does not drink like 65 IBUs, probably due to the high malt presence.
Feel - medium bodied, medium high carbonation, and a moderately strong brew at 7.1%
Overall - my first time in Arizona, and this is the only 6-pack that I picked up. Not half bad. A remarkably easy drinking and pretty flavorful beer.

Can from Whole Foods in Sedona.

A clear light copper with a dense white head with good retention and lacing this looks solid. The nose is moderately hoppy with citrus, papaya and some mango. Navel orange and clementine notes are present. Minimal malt character. The palate opens mildly bitter with citrus oil bitterness and a moderate tropical fruit flavor. Bitterness is clean and mildly oily, tempering the fruity notes from the hops. Light in body with a mild wheat like grist character, this has a mild water cracker flavor. Light in body and arguably slightly watery, this beer is softly carbonated and mildly bitter on the finish with fruity flavors present. Solid.

The notes of peach, apricot and tropical fruit promoted on the can never materialized in taste or aroma. This is a one trick pony Wheat IPA, which it is not even advertised as being. That one trick is the high ABV %. Sure, they use a lot of hops, but if the only flavor profile is bitter hops, is it worth it? No notes of citrus, no notes of pine, severely undercarbonated. Perhaps I just got a bad batch, but if not, it is more proof that Arizona brewers need to step up their game.

Good amount of white Grapefruit juice up front. Pine, orange, tangerine round out the rest of the flavors. Slightly undercarbed. Prickly bitterness with restrained sweetness. It's good.

24oz can (man, these things really remind me of American gas station beer offerings).

This beer pours a slightly hazy, medium golden yellow colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly eggshell white head, which leaves some decent splotchy webbed lace around the glass as it quickly sinks away.

It smells of mixed tropical fruit (pineapple, guava, and gooseberry), bready and doughy caramel malt, a subtle cereal wheatiness, muddled domestic citrus rind, and a bit of leafy, weedy, and piney green hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, some blended exotic fruitiness, bland orange and generic grapefruit citrus peel, a hint of earthy yeast, and more hovering leafy, herbal, and musty pine needle verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is rather engaged in its robust frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and generally smooth, as the hops are of the respectful sort here. It finishes off-dry, the malt and antipodean fruitiness carrying the day.

Overall, this is an agreeable enough variant of the style, with the focus on Australian hops a pleasant experience, even if the 'moon' and 'out of this world' marketing claims (which only apply to the Galaxy side of the hop equation) seem spurious at best. Worth checking out, even if it looks like a tall, tall (tall) boy of BMC from your local Chevron.

A slightly hazy golden/amber with massive carbonation swirling inside the glass, and a two finger, white head, that lasts. The aroma is lots of nice tropical fruit, a little dankness, and citrus. The flavor is much like the aroma, and, a little caramel malt to balance it out. The feel is a little below average carbonation, a little slick at first, but, dry on the back end, and medium body. Some beers, if you want more carbonation on the tongue instead of in the glass, you should pour slowly; this is one of those beers. Pretty good flavor, though. I'd try it again.

12oz can served in a snifter. Given to me by @mr-jj. Crafted on 02/07/17.

Pours hazy light amber with a pretty, medium-sized, creamy head. Pretty beer. Head fades fairly fast. Smell is hop resin, pine, and lemon.

Taste is moderately straw-y. Definitely some hops and pine, with a bit of lemon/citrus. Some kind of an odd green vegetable flavor in there - not too strong, but not quite right.

Mouthfeel is light, smooth, and effervescent. Overall, not bad.

24 oz. can:

Pours slightly hazed amber with a fluffy lasting head. Trailing lace sticks.

The smell is of a robust fruity hops that are reminiscent of apricot, peaches, mango, grapefruit. Fruity, spicy, strong.

The taste is of fresh juicy fruit - tropical and citric. A touch of black pepper and leafy spicing in the finish. Malt (esp. wheat) lays in the back to allow the bitterness to come through.

A great choice for a pleasantly bitter, hop-forward brew!

Poured from a 12 ounce can, dated 8/14/16 (duh), a slightly hazed orangey under a one-inch thick white head which fades to the rim and leaves spotty lace. Aroma is mildly tropical fruits, peach and apricot. Flavor is balanced by the malt, perhaps an old can? Finishes slightly dry and bitter with a slightly soapy finish.

Translucent yellow-orange.

As expected from Galaxy and Nelson: rope fruit off set by a harsh-ish white wine. Enough alcohol's there to remind you it's beer. Finish is dirty like a red, but doesn't linger so much.

Light, not that dry, carb is maybe a bit high.

Pours a big fluffy rich 1+ finger head that fades semi slowly with loads of layered lacing, hazy golden honey tan straw color.

Nose starts malty, some biscuity toasted grainy malts, touch doughy, into grassy candy hops, little candied fruit, little earthy herbal, generic fruity and a little spicy hop, candied sweet malts.

Taste brings more malts, semi sweet and a little syrupy, toasted malts, grainy a little dough, into big grassy hops, a little fruity like candied pineapple and citrus, candied stone fruit, sweet syrupy notes, into some earthy herbal grassy hop notes, and spicy late, with fair bitterness in front. then a weird apple core flavor, maybe some fruity esters or something like that, something that doesn't seem to belong anyways. Then gets super spicy as it attempts to dry but stays sticky and sweet, big spicy bitterness lingering, little sweet candy malts too.

Mouth is med to fuller bod, little syrupy, touch booze warmth, decent fluffy carb.

Overall eh, not a very good IPA for any style, malts are too heavy and clash with the hops a bit, hops are just all over the place and don't seem to belong anywhere, crazy bitterness that doesn't go well, and perhaps a weird ester profile, but either way not very enjoyable.

Pours a slightly hazy golden amber color with a 2 finger width foamy head. Head retention and lacing are both excellent. Aroma of citrus, fresh piney resin and hints of peach. Very appealing. This is definitely a tasty IPA. Taste pretty much follows course with the aroma, but you really don't get the peach. Instead, there is a very mild hint of wheat at the end. Mild astringency and soapy character at the end. Light bodied with moderate carbonation.

Thick on the palate, and unbalanced one-dimensional bitterness that almost hits the spot but falls short. There's something interesting there but it just doesn't work with the heavy, boozy-but-not-sharp, medicinal umph thing it has going on. Bought it twice now and this, the second time, committed to avoid in the future.

Based on the packaging, you'd have no idea this was a wheat IPA - I had no clue before reading the BA overview.. That explains a lot, particularly the thick feel, but without a heads-up on the cans I'm calling this one mis-represented and mis-marketed, perhaps the most egregious of craft brew sins.
