On-tap at Chaparral Safeway, Scottsale, AZ:

Pours black with strong ruby highlights. Lacing sticks.

The smell is of caramel, cocoa nibs, earthy hops, slight roast.

The taste is of caramel, (hint of cocoa?), woody, earthy hops. Sweet finish. Alcohol well-hidden.

It has a soft, velvety smooth body.

The hop character is dank, earthy, woody. The malt is strong. It is labelled as an Imperial IPA, but Imperial Red (or even Imperial Black?) would fit. A dark, malty, woody/earthy DIPA. Interesting. It works!

Poured on draft into a wide mouth glass (an unusual glass ware choice at this establishment). Excellent curtain lacing from a thin head. A deep red color with an caramel, fruity taste. Sort of like a red IPA. Smooth rich feel, an enjoyable beer!

Pours a amber red. Smells of sweet malts, rye, earthy/grass hops. Tastes of sweet malts, rye, some pine, grassy. Medium body and med/light carbonation. Pine resin and sweet malts left on the palate.

Not a bad malty brew with just enough hoppy bite. The color is actually a rather nice red-brown. Even a decent cap of foam in the tall Belgian glass.

Sweet from start to finish, but the hops are bitter, woody, and tangy, all in a nice way. Quite a decent brew. Modest floral and resiny aroma.

Jeez, I should have been reviewing this instead of sipping and reading Christmas letters. I am feeling woozy...
