From BeerAdvocate Magazine #86 (Mar 2014):

Chocolate, Thin, Declawed

“Yep, it's made with bits of real panther, so you know it's good.” Not really, but it’s a great name. Unfortunately, it stops there. What’s touted as a “silky smooth Double Chocolate Porter” with “large amounts” of malts is thin, acrid, metallic, nutty and wheaty. The chocolate flavors from cocoa and malts is there, along with some faint molasses, but there’s not much to back it up with. The addition of white wheat seems overdone and out of place, too; it lingers in the finish. Not bad, just expected more.

I couldn't have been more disappointed. I fell for the name and label that says "double chocolate". Its thin, barely any chocolate flavor and for the price you could get much better flavors elsewhere.

Rookie move. Fell for the goofy label and name. Damn it all.

A: Looks good enough. Deep hazelnut color on the pour settles to a nearly black with a thin tan head in the glass. Some moderate lace.

S: You're welcome for the 3 bucks, San Tan. Bastards. This smells nearly exactly like my cat after we realize we've left him out in the rain and we finally let him in and then he's been glaring at us from the couch for an hour trying to warm up and he's almost dry enough to pet, but he keeps staring at us and he smells dander-y so we stay away. It smells exactly like that. Maybe a hint of dark chocolate as well.

T: I mean, did they even try on this? Or did they think of the name and realize it didn't matter what they put in the can, idiots like me would buy it? It's like a Michael Bay film in a glass. Thin, an absolute mess, and nothing close to what was advertised. Chocolate? Maybe the faintest hint of that white stuff you scrape off the top of your halloween candy after you find it in the back of your closet where it's been hiding for seven years and you know it's a really bad idea but you don't have any other chocolate in the house so you're game. Don't take the bait, beer friends.

Sampled at 1702; February 2011
Arrives from the tap with a dark, concentrated brown color that shows a clear, rich brown hue when held up to the light. The head is a lightly browned, darker tan colored head. The aroma smells of toasted malt character that has lots of browned bread character. There is an underlying fruitiness that almost has a tartness to it and it reminds of plums, a suggestion of cherries and lightly roasted raisins.

Lightly sweet tasting and actually quite fruity with notes of plums and rum soaked raisins (though without the heat), accentuating brown sugar notes, chewy toasted brown grain flavors, lots of nutty notes (almost hazelnut like in character). At times the body of this can seem somewhat rich, but at others it seems like it is a bit on the thin side for a beer of this type; there is a touch of creaminess to the texture and the carbonation is fairly slight. There is a touch of herbal, definitely bitter (but not overly so) hop character in this beer that supports the more dominant malt / sweet character of this beer. A touch of dark grain character also seems to contribute a bit to the bitterness in the finish. As the beer warms a touch of cola like spiciness comes out and this seems to be accentuated by the lightly sweet malt and toasted grain edge to the finish.

Not bad, but it doesn't seem to quite do it for me either; the biggest thing for me is that it seems to get quite thin after only a couple sips and the flavors suggest / require a big, chewy beer to support the character properly.

12-oz. can with an Oct. 2015 canning date on th bottom.

Poured a dark mahogany color with a moderate-large tan, frothy head. Above average lacing on the sides of the glass. Good retention.

Aroma: toffee, chocolate, warm caramel, and dark fruit bread.

Flavor: chocolate, roasty malts, roasted nuts, some dark fruits. A hint of coffee in the aftertaste. More toffee than expected for style but more chocolate flavors and excellent sweet/bitter balance..

Feel: Medium+ body. Creamy texture. Lively, medium carbonation.

Overall: tasty and well worth seeking out, although not up with Youngs Double Chocolate and some others.

A dark dark reddish colored beer rests below a big tan head. A nice lacing and a small biscuity mound remain long after the head has receded on this American Porter.

Dark chocolates, light black licorice and a hint of alcohol aroma.

Roasted grain malts with a edge towards dark bakers chocolate taste with just a hint of hops bitterness.

A dry aftertaste on this full bodied beer with a light darker chocolate taste staying around.

Decent tasting easy drinking porter, worth a try. I think pairing this with the right food and it would only get much better.

More like a brown ale, IMO, but pretty tasty. The chocolate came out real well in this one.

Pour is very dark color with a nice foamy head. Smells of chocolate, malt, coffee, and maple. Taste is exceptional, very smooth chocolate coffee flavors hit ya, you can taste malt and some candy like items like butterscotch or something in there. Very clean and refreshing beer I am a big fan of this one.

Bought a can of Sex Panther whilst in Ft. Lauderdale to take on a cruise. The beer poured a opaque black in color with off-white head that left a spotty lace. The scent and taste carried hints of chocolate and roast. The mouthfeel was lighter than I prefer my porters and with smooth carbonation. Overall it was ok....the name is much better than the beer.

Incredibly thin mouthfeel. Almost no hint of chocolate.
