Appearance is a dark brownish copper with more than a finger of beige head. The head had some nice retention to it. There are mild hints of malt in the nose, but it is not a very strong scent at all. The taste is definitely malty, but it is not as hearty as the best beers of this style. There is some pleasant hop dryness on the finish. One bonus is that there is no overwhelming cidery, alcohol flavor that becomes too much in certain doppelbocks.

i was in bethlehem the other day and could not wait to go to the brewpub. it is damn near impossible to find beer in pennsylvania with their stupid beer laws. no bottled beer at grocery, gas stations or liqour stores. you can buy wine and vodka at liqour stores but no beer. . you have to go to package stores that are few and far. I went into two different restaruants and was told it was a bring your own beer restaraunt(?). any ways the beer was an good doppelbock: poured dark, reddish brown. didnt have much of a head. what was there was white. the doppelbock flavor was there. bready, fruity, slight chocolate. no real noticeable smell but the beer was cold and my sense of smells sucks anyways so the beer has to be strong for me to really smell it. the abv was high but smooth, hiding behind the mild sweetness of the beer. I could have easily drank a few of these but i was with family. so i drank one with brats in a sauerbraten gravy with red cabbage and potato salad. the one thing i enjoy about the bethlehem area is the german and eastern euro cuisine. cant reallly get that down here in the carolinas but i can buy beer anywhere i damn well please here.

On tap at the BBW brew pub.

Poured a deep amber (almost a medium brown) color with a very small sized off white head. Aromas of toasted malts, chocolate, light bread and some dark fruits. Tastes of light bread, toffee, dark fruits, toasted malts and somewhat of a brown sugar sweetness. Alcohol content well hidden.

The beer pours a ruby red/brown color with a 1/2" offwhite head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is great. It has a wonderful roasted and crystal malt scent. It's sweet with malts yet, dry with a lager backbone. The taste is good. It has a smooth, burnt toffee and caramel flavor that goes down easy and finishes dry with no alcohol warmth. This is a very well brewed beer; quite tastey. The mouthfeel is great. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a very complex , yet easy drinking beer. It's loaded with flavor and tremendous mouthfeel.

On tap at Allentown Brew Works 4-1-13. This was a pleasant surprise, brewed very true to style. Can't comment on the pour as it was brought to the table while I was dining. The head was sparse with good lacing. Color is deep red/brown. Smells sweet and "bready". Taste and mouthfeel are very much like the better German examples of this style, maybe a bit more syrupy, but definitely not too sweet. Very little evidence of the 7.2% alcohol. Really nice body with moderate carbonation. Very solid Doppelbock.
