Deep tarnished orange hue. Thick off white head that settles down rather quickly. smells like a pumpkin candle. cinnamon clove allspice wax and soap. some unfermented malt extract smells as well.

Thinner body than expected. Good deal of sweetness but nothing too cloying. Extremely faint detectable alcohol. Starts bold on the tip of tongue with pumpkin pie flavors which fade to just pumpkin flavors and finally to a grainy dry malt like flavor with the addition of a touch of soapiness. Dark fruit becomes a little present as the beer warms. Figs and raisins, touches of caramel. The beer eventually turns to a misunderstood mess of flavors that try to work together but just cant. Interesting at best.

In the world of great pumpkin beers, this overpriced one doesn't stand much of a chance.

It's fall outside.. tis the season for pumpkinfestive brews! My fear was that this would be an overly sweet beer with an artifical pumpkin flavor.. only because so many other pumpkin beers seem to try to add a flavor to a beer.. this wasnt the case.

I live about an hour away from Allentown, PA where this beer is brewed, so it was easy to find in a local store. I purchased a 1Pt, 9.4 oz bottle for about 9 bucks, and I would say that a beer, at this size.. for the alcohol content.. its worth the price (note, when I drink beer, I have a 50-50 rule, 50% towards taste, 50% towards making me feel all happy inside).

First, it's a PUMPKIN ale, so dont add any fruit to it (unless you prefer an orange pumpkin ale ;) It pours with an orange, hazy, murky color, with a medium head. If you close your eyes and dip your nose into the glass, you will invariably pickup notes of pumpkin.

The initial taste is light, with a medium-low amount of carbonation. What's worthy of note with this beer is that its a beer with Pumpkin, not the opposite. Its certainly not sweetend.. or sweet for that matter, and not overdone, just brewed with the flavors you would hope for with a Pumpkin Ale.

The aftertaste is slightly on the bitter side, but for a beer with this particular amount of alcohol content, its finishes rather nicely.

Overall, I enjoyed this beer, but I wouldnt go out of my way to purchase it again. Its not that I didnt like it.. but rather I just didnt fall in love with it. However, for 8-9 bucks a bottle, for 9% alcohol, and for a seasonal beer in mid-october, it was a nice treat. I would recommend this beer to a friend.. but I wouldnt buy a 12 pack of it.

A- Pours and orange/amber color. Half finger head that fades quickly. Little to no lacing.

S- cinnamon, molasses and a little bit of alchohol.

T- a little bit of pumpkin, cinnamon and molasses. A little bit of sweetness here, but not as sweet as Pumking.

M- A little thin with a decent amount of carbonation. There's a residual spiciness. No real alcohol bite, though.

O- Not a bad imperial pumpkin. Not one of my favorites, but certainly not a bad brew.

Let me start by saying I'm. Huge pumpkin fan coming from the angle that pumking is the true king in this style.

Color: orange hue that screams of fall and pumpkin. Nice half inch head after pour that quickly disappears
Smell: a pumpkin smell straight at the top with some cinnamon on the back end
Taste: this is where it falls to southern tier. You get a blast of pumpkin but it's quickly masked by the 9% abv. It leaves you wanting more pumpkin in the flavor and for the thought of....."i wish it were pumking"

If I had this first I would probably be raving more but I'll state it as such, this is a very solid representation of the style and a very good beer for pumpkin lovers but it's not the best available. You won't be dissapointed however if you purchase.

DATE TASTED: October 30, 2015 ... GLASSWARE: Maudite snifter... OCCASION: Another successful high school homecoming game... APPEARANCE: dark, almost mahogany brown body that densely conceals the other side of the glass; tough to see any bubbles; the head is a staunch white halo of bubble and smears; good, thick lacing that resembles Japanese artwork... AROMA: pumpkin, phenol and surprisingly thick dough at the start; caramel is interwoven with a vodka or rum base that suggests the alcohol that 9% brings... PALATE: warming immediately; dissipating aftertaste; medium-bodied, flat carbonation, with no fanfare at its end... TASTE: tough to get past the phenolic presence; the malts are strong and overpower other flavors--such as pumpkin(!)--and leave a plasticine ending ... OVERALL: not at all up to my expectations, with the majority of the experience centering on the awkward, medicinal flavor....a strong, demanding seasonal that needs more nuance to be memorable or sought out...

On tap at Capone's Restaurant. Amber coloured body with a little head; a lace sheet. Very pumpkiny. OK, but another beer that adds to being pumpkined out. Spice up front, including lots of salt and coriander. So-so drinkability.Could be better spice mix, would like more cinammon and nutmeg.

12oz bottle fresh and in early season from Abe;s of Bethlehem. Pours a magnificent clear copper color with little, diminishing head. Aroma is of pie spice mostly and is fairly pleasant. The taste is balanced! The pumpkin is noticeable but not overbearing. Mouthfeel is average to good... hops are a little too much actually.

Overall this is a good Pumpkin beer that actually kind of reminds me of a Yuengling for some reason or another....

Begley's Brew Works "Devious Imperial Pumpkin"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BTLON: 080516" and sampled on 083116
$2.49 @ Whole Foods, Plymouth Meeting, PA

Finally a pumpkin beer I can get behind! Actually, I think I reviewed this beer years ago and it got deleted, but I saw it on the shelf at Whole Foods and was reminded of it, and I had to have it. In fact, I liked it so much that I picked up more last night! It's just so malty, and not over-spiced, or too hot with alcohol - no, this is a dangerous beast, you need to be careful with it. In my previous review which was lost I recall commenting on how in my neighborhood the adults would have coolers full of beer available out front so the parents could have a little bit of a good time too, and how I had brought a Devious with me and just couldn't pick up anything else after that. One of the best "pumpkin" beers I've ever had.

Smell: Pumpkins, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, cloves.

Taste: The usual flavors and spices you would expect in a Imperial pumpkin style. Heavy on the nutmeg, and as it warmed up, more nutmeg. Balance of flavors is just off on this one.

Overall: For some reason, I buy a bomber of this every year in hopes that they tweak it enough to get it right, but am always left wondering why they continue to miss the boat. Skip this and go for Southern Tier Pumking or Shipyard Pugley's Smashed Pumpkin.
