Nuclear maltsplosion. A LOT of malt up front, but it goes away really fast on the palate. Pretty average beer, which is a surprise considering the quality of their other offerings.

Enjoyed Sunday brunch at Blue's Egg in Milwaukee. Had this after the meal. Absolutely hit the spot after a burger: moderate malt, good bubbles, hints of brine, neutral overall, not a centerpiece, but a complement.

Pours a slightly cloudy reddish amber color with off-white head. Caramel malts, bread, and biscuit on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with more malt, good red ale.

Had this beer on nitro (hence the higher marks) at Guu's, downtown Steven's Point. Would like to try it side by side with normal Rusty Red to compare.

From notes on 4/29/14

I don’t know why, I just really don’t like this beer. I've had it from a bottle, but this last Saturday my dad got a Nitro pour of it at the brewery. Wow, that made it much worse. The name seemed fitting as all I could taste was rust. He actually liked it. Me, I enjoy most everything from O’so, but this one beer.

I like some of OSO beers, but this misses the mark. It's too malty and really difficult to drink out of a bottle...if you have a 6 pack drink out of a glass for sure! not very tasty compared to FIXED GEAR. I like the color/smell, but the taste IS NOT FOR ME. Good luck on your next Red Adventure.

12 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. My fourth beer from O'so Brewing. Expectations are pretty good, since I remember liking O'so Dank Imperial Red quite a bit.

Poured into a Lagunitas mason jar.

A - Pours a dark muddy brown-hued "rusty" red colored body. About a finger or so of fluffy khaki head that falls to a ring quickly. Lots of active carbonation is noticeable. Looks pretty good.

S - The smell is typical of the style - dry earthy red malts, twiggyness, faded herbal hop presence, some caramel / toffee, and some light cola.

T - Taste follows the nose - bready caramel malt, earthy red / amber malt, twiggy, herbal hoppiness, and some cola sort of flavors.

M - The feel is smooth, creamy, crisp, and drinkable. Very light bitterness on the palate. Very nice finish.

Overall, it is an about average red ale from O'so, but it definitely hits all the right marks. Worthy of a try that's for sure, but it probably isn't a beer I would seek out again often.

Pours slightly hazed dark amber to reddish with an off-white head that settles to a lasting thin cover. Ample lacing sticks.

The smell is of caramel with an unfortunate touch of sour apple.

The taste is malty caramel with apple juice and a vague bready touch. The sour apple throws off the flavor. Alcohol is noticeable in a somewhat distracting way, as it doesn't blend in so well. It has a sweet and sour finish.

It is too sour for the style and the alcohol level is slightly too noticeable for the general character. It does have a smooth malty backbone, but the two detractors, especially the sour apple take too much away from this brew.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

But I don't necessarily want my red ale to be rusty... Anyway, this stuff pours a clear bronze-copper topped by a finger of sandstone foam. The nose comprises lightly-toasted biscuit, light hazelnut, sweet flowers, and a vague berry-like aroma powerfully pervading the background. The taste brings in more of the same, though the toast is a bit darker (and lurking more prominently in the finish) and the berry character now resembles some funky, old cider,or maybe mild orange juice, acid and all. It's definitely off-putting. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, I think this had some promise, but the berry smell and apple/orange flavor just don't do the beer any justice.

Near inch tall fizzy off white head on a murky reddish brown body. Cap and collar throughout, minimal lacing.

Smell isnt off-putting but not desireable to me. A little like copper pennies.

Caramel and toffee notes from the malt. Low hop presence. Would guess at lower that 6%abv

Medium mouthfeel, medium carbonation.

I think the 6%abv works against this beer. For the most part it's an easy drinker and most would treat it as such...the higher than perceived alcohol really limits its drinkability. Overall, an average somewhat flavorful beer.

12 oz. bottle. Decent head falls quicly with no lacing. Clear reddish brown color.

Slight aroma of red malt.

Taste is a typical red of above average quality. Nice malty easy drinking brew.

Mouthfeel is slick with below average carbonation.

O'so is new to me but good to check out a new brewery.

12 oz. bottle tried 28 Oct 2010. Courtesy of R&S, thanks! Served in the Lakefront shaker pint.

Medium sized light brown head. Lightly carbonated. Clear reddish brown in color. Aroma is reminiscent of brown sugar, lightly nutty, a touch sour. Starts nutty sour. Becomes a little earthy in the middle. Somewhat bitter aftertaste. Medium body, light alcohol.

A bit below average.

Deep garnet in color with a simple foam collar, no lacing. Nice creamy and smooth medium-bodied texture, perhaps just slightly undercarbonated for the thickness. Aroma contains a smoked peat presence on top of a nice blend of caramel and toffee maltiness, tastes of the same malty blend and a somewhat lighter smokey element than the nose hinted at. Also, the finish of the sip contains a certain dry nuttiness. I really like this one. Although, IMHO, it presents itself as more of a Scotch Ale at times than the Red Ale it claims to be.

I wasn't expecting much from this brew after reading the reviews but this is a pretty good offering.

Had a ton of head when poured into my tulip but left no lacing. Has a nutty carmel aroma that is pleasant. Tastes almost like a Belgian of some sort. Very little hop taste. Very creamy in my mouth, even better as it warmed up. Strongly recommend to let it warm up.

Very nice brew.

Poured from a chilled bottle into a 14-ounce tumbler. Foam builds, then recedes to a weak rim around the glass. Very little lacing. Simple malty nose with a little nuttiness and butter.

Taste is nut and a little butter to go along with the grain. The buttery notes give the brew a slight richness that's pleasant. Hops finally show up at the finish.

Central Wisconsin has seen a lot of craft brewers pop up in recent years. This one has been uneven, veering from excellence to mediocrity. Unfortunately, Rusty Red leans toward the latter pole.

poured into a mug

appearance: pours a rusty amber color, smooth poor, no head formed at all

aroma: not much, maybe some hints of malts and a touch of cinnamon. it smells a little roasty but its not extremely pleasant, just average

palate: medium body, little carbonation, flavor sits on the tongue

taste: not a very good tasting beer. it has some roasty qualities to it, maybe hints of malt, but it tastes a bit stale.

overall: not very impressed with this beer, but its only my second brew by o'so. i had their night train which was very very good, so I know the brewery has potential to put out some good beers. they could let this one fade away and i doubt anyone would care that much, theres nothing to see here

A -Poured out as a dark red / orange color with a head that receded quickly. All that was left was a thin, spotty head.

S - Faint smell of apple with some nuttiness, but nothing spectacular or really anything that stands out.

T - The nuttiness is what stands out most when it first hits the tongue. There maybe a slight hint of fruit and some malt as well. It's flavor seems dull and mostly unpronounced.

M - Very light on the carbonation makes it easy to drink.

O - I think this is extremely drinkable, but doesn't deliver much in the way of flavors. It's flavors would be more enjoyable if they were not so subtle. You really have to look for them which is more work than it should be.

Reddish amber with two fingers of dense head that had good retention. Moderate amount of lacing is left behind.

Malty aroma with a bread like quality. Also pick up some tart fruit.

Caramel malt makes up the majority of the flavor. A little bit of toasted bread as well. Some acidity and tartness.

Not that impressive of a body but is nicely carbonated.

This is the second amber/red ale in a week that was slightly sour. Is this a trend that brewers are purposely persuing? I do not think it really belongs in this style of beer.

A-transparent amber with white lacing that disapates quickly
S-somewhat of a cherry smell to it. Don't know that this is what they intended to do or not...
T-kind of like soaked cherry oak chips. Not bad but not what I think it was going for
M-medium bodied and a little sour
D-OK at best. Could do a little better...

Uh, not so great. Poured with a small to medium very light tan head and no lace. Color is a clear amber red. Aroma was a very mild malt with a bare hint of hop. Flavor is not so good- buttery malt that just totally dominates. Carbonation and body are ok. Finish is like flavor and had to eat some bread to get rid of t he taste.

from 12 oz single bottle

A-pours a clear dark brown/cherry color with a nice fresh 1 finger head that stays for a while and settles in to a nice collar with good lacing

S- i get almost nothing but faint malts and bread..really almost no smell

T- was better then smell it is a roasted malt and bready caramel amber beer slight hop and slight citrus

M- well carbonated, crisp, clean, very smooth on the pallet somewhat creamy with the malts

D-it drinkable but not flavorful enough to enjoy it or recommend just fell short on the nose and taste for me need more hop and citrus to mix with the malts

A buddy bought this and brought it along to a wedding. Finishing off a six pack now.

A - Deep dark red with a white small foam head

S - Roasted malts and a touch of smoke maybe but not much. It almost smells like a scotch ale or wee heavy witht he hint of smoke.

T - Again some roasty malts, maybe some smoke. Tasts like almost like a scotch ale again.

M - Low carbonation and thick mouthfeel. Decent

D - Solid. It doesn't seem too high ABV so I could have a few.

Overall a surprisingly decent brew. Maybe a bit of smoke here which is nice. Not sure it tastes like a red ale but pretty solid.

Served on-tap @ Comet Cafe.

Pours a rusty garnet color with a moderate head that results in some attractive lacing throughout the session.

Virtually undetectable nose: If anything, faint notes of caramel and roasted malt.

Um...taste? Well, I sincerely wish it had some. Besides a suggestion of roasted malt and very subtle hint of caramel, this ale has absolutely no character. If you were introduced to this beer at a party, you'd find an excuse to get out of the conversation and make a break for it. Truly uninspired stuff.

Drinkable? Sure, I suppose it's smooth and poundable, but there are too many rewarding American Ambers out there to fritter your time away with the likes of Rusty Red. Not recommended.

Rusty brown, decent head that leaves some lacing.

Malty and bready smell, slight hint of hop earthyness.

Bready, malty, earthy, and balanced. This is quite pleasant.

Mouthfeel creamy and full.

I was surprised this is rated so low, because I thought this beer was quite well done. Perhaps they were/are having bottling consistency issues early on? I see they have a new label, maybe they've got their act together. At any rate, I'll be back to this and looking to try whatever else O'so has got.

Poured into a pint glass this brew has a nice light amber color with a 1/2 finger white head that left faint traces of lacing. The aroma is very faint. Some light malts, sweet caramel and a light nuttiness. The taste is mild with some of the nutty malt up front and a slight sour finish. The carbonation and mouthfeel is a little heavy and I like that. A decent brew to just sit back and have a few, but nothing special here.
