Bottle from a friend. My first beer from Oso. Pours dark brown to black with a half finger off white head. Aroma of strong chocolate goodness with some heavy roast malt in the background. Flavor follows with chocolate as the highlight and plenty of bitter roasted malt on the finish. Just a bit of dark fruit to go along. Velvety smooth mouthfeel with lowish carbonation. Very nice body. Overall a solid porter.

Pours an opaque molasses color with an ample khaki head with good retention that even affords some cratering as it settles. A hybrid veil of lacing--solid beneath and reticulated above--frames the top of the glass admirably. The aroma smells of dark chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruit, raisins, and the barest trace of floral hops. There's also an x-factor in the nose that I can't place--kind of smoky, but not quite. I've heard "peat" trotted out as a descriptor on occasion, and while I can't say I've ever tasted or smelt it, I imagine it could resemble this.

The flavor reveals a high level of complexity, with an unusually fruity backbone for a porter. The same plum/raisin character that was prominent in the nose is on full display here, along with some fig, dates, currants and roasted malt. There's also a tartness suggestive of black cherry and herbal hops that singes that rear periphery of the tongue. The chocolate suggested in the nose is difficult to discern in the taste, but that's no great loss considering the existing complexity. Truly, the intensity and depth of the dark fruit ensemble may be the finest I've experienced, and could easily be used as an exemplar for that class of flavors. The finish is excellent, as just as it appears to subside, an aftershock of smoked dates eases its way back into your consciousness. The flavors described above only become more pronounced and enjoyable with the requisite warming. You can almost taste it as your nose crests the glass...

My only grievance is that the body is a little thin considering the style and depth of flavor. It's slightly sticky, but still too loose for my tastes. The mouthfeel is smooth and lively, though the carbonation overextends itself a bit on the back end, accentuating a bitterness that can be grating, even if only briefly.

Overall, this a unique and highly engaging porter with a dark fruit malt character that would be at home in an artisanal imperial stout. A slightly heavier body and more muted carbonation would take this beer to elite status, even though it may be atypical for the style. I picked this up on a whim, and am glad I did.
