Served in an Ohio State shaker pint glass.

We need more faux-contractions that take out random letters in w'rds. Anyway, this stuff pours a clear amber-copper topped by a finger of pale cream foam. The nose comprises caramel, mild nuts, and even milder grass. The taste brings in more of the same, the grass darkening a bit (becoming earthier and whatnot). The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, a nice enough O-Fest, but nothing close to worry about finding in our increasingly crowded near-Fall shelves.

12oz bottle poured into a perfect pint.

A - A dark copper color shows off its excellent clarity. A vanilla colored head drops to a ring in the glass. No lacing.

S - Plenty layers of toastiness, near caramel. Splash of chocolate malt. Some alcohol showing face. Hops have yet to join.

T - Some acidity early, hop twang. Malt takes on a more caramel character here with toasty notes as well. Rich flavor but somehow simplistic. Hop flavor is mild and bitterness is just enough to strike balance. Aftertaste shows more of those caramel flavors for a bit.

M - Medium-light to medium body, medium-light carbonation, semi-sweet.

O - A little more on the hefty side for the style but not tipping the scales. Malt was a little rich but I appreciated the body. The background acidity throws of the drinkability for me. Not my favorite o'so beer but I'm glad I gave it a shot.

Reviewed from notes.

Pours out a dark amber with brownish tinges around the edges of the glass with a single finger of cream colored foam that lasts for about two minutes and leaves behind some light amounts of lacing on the glass. Medium light body and carbonation levels, relatively smooth texture.

Smells mostly of pepper-dusted walnuts and toasted bread with lesser amounts of earthy mustiness playing a supporting role. The flavor is almost 80% comprised of partially roasted / semi-burned oily walnuts and hazelnuts, the other 20% is a lighter amount of breadiness, earthy hopping, and a dash of pepper floating around in the background. While I do like my marzens with a decent amount of nutty flavor, a power chord of nuttiness used as a majority of the flavor spectrum gets a bit tiring and monotonous through the course of an entire bottle. If only there was a somewhat larger proportion of breadiness and perhaps a dash of herbal leafy hopping, it would appeal to me quite a lot more.

As it stands, I've never had a nuttier marzen, pun definitely intended.

Okay, next O-Fest while watching some football. Poured out of a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Served chilled...

A) Another very dark Oktoberfest. Looked like the Berghoff I just finished. This had virtually no head, no lacing. Looked like a flat cola.

S) Darker malt, burning brown sugar, quite earthy, leafy and slightly grassy.

T) This has a good amount of roast and malt sweetness, burnt earthiness and fair hop bitterness for balance. It was pretty meh, but better with some warmth.

M) Medium body with moderate carbonation. This one is pretty smooth. The aftertaste is kind of dirty, which could be improved upon.

O) Not terrible, but no better than average. Feel free to pass on this seasonal.

Poured at a good temperature with a smallish, very light tan head that settles out and a bit of lace. Color is a red amber with no bubble trails. Aroma is malt, barn, a bit of skunk and solvent. Flavor's much better with rich malt, enough carbonic tang and hop/yeast bitter to balance the malt sweet and a bit of roast to top it off. Body & carbonation are good. Finish is like flavor, average length and drinkable. I'd have another. This was a gift from friend Paul B; thanks man!

12 oz bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada imperial pint.
5.9% ABV, "Cheers to Wisconsin's finest season!"

A - This bronze oktoberfest shimmers with great clarity while bubbles lazily rise to the low-formed and moderately retained off-white head. Peanut shell shaped globs of lace remain stuck to the pint in a ring above the beer.

S - O'so's O-toberfest smells the part with it's immediately apparent and forward malt aroma, rich with toasty, bready Vienna and sweet Munich malts. A dollop of caramel and honey aids in the sweet smell with an underlying nuttiness and earthy hop scent that compliments fall but doesn't so much suggest German noble hops. Very inviting and aromatic.

T - O-toberfest continues on it's malty path with the same dense bready aspects the aroma foreshadows. Nuttiness becomes bolder in flavor while the same sweetness lingers throughout, lightly overshadowing the earthy hop contribution which flourishes more freely in aroma.

M - Sweet, but not cloyingly so, O-toberfest is medium-full bodied and smooth as velvet with a lightly dry finish, letting this beer trail off decidedly malty.

O - O'so's O-toberfest lacks the supreme drinkability that the German classics offer so generously. But what it lacks in excessive drinkability, it makes up for with hearty bold flavor and a robust, smooth feel, giving it substance. It's malty characteristics play directly into German tradition but it seems light-handed when it comes to the German noble hops. A bit of herbal spice with light floral notes might balance this and suggest an elevated level of drinkability.

Poured a bottle into a pint glass.

A- An Amber like color that almost hits a Light Red. The darkest Oktoberfest style beer I have had yet. Very small head that disappears quickly, leaving almost no trace around the glass.

S- Smells very well roasted and toasted. The smells that here in the north woods of Wisconsin signify the smells of fall. Very satisfying.

T- A delicious balance of roasted malt taste. With just a hint of hops at the end on the pallet.

M- Very smooth balanced feel, very good carbonation on the tip of your tounge followed by a very balanced finish.

O- I understand that O'SO brewery does more of a "freestyle" brewing. But it just doesn't meet my taste normally. I would expect a little more hops taste in an Oktoberfest beer, but they did well. This would serve better as a holiday beer with its taste and color.

A- Probably the darkest Oktoberfest I have tried thus far. Half finger head that fizzles away in under a minute with no lacing but rims around glass. Body is a hazy reddish/copper brown.

S- Very sweet in comparison to other Oktoberfests. Typical caramel malts and grains along with apple.

T- Very surprising sour apple taste that masks the caramel malts. It’s different.

M- Decent carbonation. Starts up front with inviting caramel tones, then quickly watered down bringing along the sour apple notes.

O- Not what I was expecting from an Oktoberfest offering. Decent, but seems to be a mislabeled style. Half way through I thought I was drinking a cider rather than a Marzen. Needs some revamping or change in title.

12oz bottle poured into a Brewers pint glass

Appearance- Very orange in color. Head is basically non existent here.

Smell- I'm detecting a char smell lots of roasty qualities.

Taste- Wow nothing like any other Oktoberfest I've ever had. Lots of roasty and toasty flavors. Almost burnt coffee like. I enjoy it because I'm a fan of shouts and porters that possess the same qualities. As far as Marzens go, it's nothing like the style.

Mouthfeel- Its watery but it kind of works well with the intense toasty flavors.

Overall- It's really nothing like the style but still a very solid tasting beer in my opinion.

2009 offering into a pint glass

A - The color of this beer as it's being poured is much darker than most oktoberfests I remember trying. The body is extremely hazy and copper reddish/brown. A half finger bubbly white head rises to about a half finger thick before fading to a ring around the glass after a couple of minutes.

S - Again, much different than a typical oktoberfest with the strong sweetness. This is more than just the typical caramel malts. Apples and other sweet fruits are present along with the usual caramel malts and other grains.

T - A light caramel malt body makes it hard to give this a truly great score when it comes to taste. There is still the sour apple aspect of this beer that baffles me and seems more pronounced than the caramel malts. No real floral notes present either.

M - Medium bodied beer with a good amount of carbonation. Entering the mouth there is hint of caramel malts, but nothing close to what it should be. Things seem too watered down on the caramel malt aspect. A respectable amount of carbonation arrives and with it comes some odd sour apple notes. As the beer leaves I am confused and surprised that this beer is an oktoberfest offering. Sour notes from the apples and carbonation are what you are left with as this beer exits. Bizarre.

D - After reading the label on the bottle which said, "O'so has a great amount of respect for Oktoberfest tradition and history", among other things, I am shocked. This is the furthest thing I have had from an oktoberfest ever. There are some interesting aspects of this beer that I like however. The apples provide a unique characteristic, but then it's not a traditional marzen either. O'so needs to get back to the drawing board on this one. Either they revamp the caramel malts and tone back the carbonation and apple aspects a bit, or start from scratch. I'll look forward to trying more of their products but after this first offering I'm left scratching my head.

This beer seems to defy the definition of a Marzen so much that I wonder why the brewer classifies it as one. To me, it seems more like a farmhouse-style brew.

It is cloudy orange, has a musty fruity smell, and the taste is noticeably sour. So, to me it misses the "Marzen" mark completely. That said, I think this beer is great. It has a nice balance it and is very drinkable. I'm tempted to drink a few more.

I will definitely get this one again in the future since I like musty sour beers but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is looking for an "Oktoberfest" as this one seems to be one in name only.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. It pours a nice amber color that is quite hazy. A 1/8 inch off-white head forms and reduces quickly to almost no lacing.

The aroma struck me as primarily that of a apple cider. There is a caramel malt component and a certain level of sour, not too potent though.

The taste was similar to the nose coming across as a cider with some caramel malt notes up front and a sour finish but again not very potent.

The mouthfeel seemed a bit high on the carbonation and a fairly light/medium body. It is fairly clean going down and leaves minimal aftertaste beyond a slight tang feel.

Overall, this beer was okay. It did not remind as much of a marzen, but more of a cider. I was hopeful as O'so makes some great beers, so I was hopeful but slightly disappointed.
