Dark in color, solid aroma. Tastes true to style with a slight malt feel to it.

Poured from 32 oz can into my trusty 22 oz glass mug (gotta let that head settle for a second filling to fit it all in). Dark amber colour and very nice lacing, very good looking beer with head retention like root beer, the head floated on the top and gave my mustache a foam mustache. Smells and tastes of the usual IPA hops but with a great malt feel.

Pours a clear dark amber color with a good foamy head. Head retention is good. Lacing is great! Big floral hoppy aroma. Kind of dank. Dank taste. Big floral hops. Some caramel. Very malty. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Tried this on tap at Mission last Friday, decided to get one of their "Cannons" 32oz canned from their tap that night. Poured into Tulip.

L: Dark ruby color, clear and very pretty, finger width off-white head that slowly recedes into a thin layer of bubbles.

S: Lots of citrus and pine hops, hints of floral. Grassy notes, and some grapefruit.

T: Well balanced here, lots of good caramel malt, still lingering bitterness and alcoholic bite. Initial flavors are actually malty with a caramel profile, the hop backbone takes charge coming through with some citrus notes like grapefruit. The bitterness shines through following that then smoothly morphs into some alcoholic bite. The finish is mostly pine. Very good DIPA IMO.

F: Medium body, low carbonation, rich hop oils on the tongue, semi-dry finish.

O: This isn't your typical DIPA and I can see why some people wouldn't enjoy the different take but IMO, different can be a breath of fresh air. This is a good beer and a very good DIPA. The above-average malt presence is kind of fun, I would prefer a little more carbonation but still not bad. This gets better as it warms too.

Thick. Malty. Good but not exceptional, doesn't "pop/wow" me. Taste improves as you get to the end (could be the 9.25% but I think it just mellows out real nice). Malty/carmel at the front end, not a hoppy explosion, piney at the finish.

For the record, here's my take on Mission Shipwrecked DIPA. Like Mission's other brews I've tried, this one is also much heavier on the malt and caramel than the competition. Their RIS for example kills the burnt malt flavor. This one is doing the same kind of thing, only with a DIPA.

This DIPA from a 22oz glass bomber into a pint glass. Pours amber, a little darker than expected, and slightly cloudy, head disappears instantly (didn't have any of that trouble others had with their 32oz funny can construction). Aroma is hoppy and citrusy, with some pine and toffee malt already coming in. Taste is pretty malt, with a sweet hop undercurrent that's more melon to me than tart citrus. The burnt caramel makes this feel heavier right away, goes to biscuit during a bitter mouthful that mixes with the booziness, cream and earth. Grassiness of the hops and roast rind continues underneath, never fading. Everything pretty present, along with an astringent quality of the bitterness (rather than just full-out bitter) that doesn't take the whole thing hostage but would be an acquired taste. Reminds me of the first time I tried Arrogant Bastard, could easily be too much for most people.

This explanation is more complex than the beer is.

Aftertaste is sticky and faintly bitter. Sweetness lingers, the almost toffee flavor and carbonation leaves the main lasting impression. They're not going for fruity here. The booze, while barely hidden in the taste, is more obvious as it warms. I like this okay, a different angle on other DIPAs, a real malt forward recipe that could benefit from some adjustment and the right food pairing.
