650 ML bottle poured into a SA perfect pint
Note: ABV is at 7.9 for this bottle. HG does small batches so ABV always changes from batch to batch.

A-- Poured a dark root beer color. No head at all to this, very little carbonation, even when opening the bottle. Even in the glass it looks very murky looking.

S-- Sweet smelling malts and oats. Has the smell of a thin chocolate milk.

T-- Very sweet chocolate and sweet Carmel. Almost like a Chocolate and Carmel flavored milk. Nothing that really sets it's self apart.

M-- Very little carbonation. Might be a whole lot better on cask than in a bottle. Needs carbonation to liven this up. Even just a bit. A lot of sweet dairy milk in the taste. Sweet syrupy feel and a bit on the heavy side due more to weight than by content. Not watery at all but not that great. Very one dimensional. Carbonation and bittering hops would do wonders for this beer. Plus side is the ABV is very well hidden.

D-- Slow sipper due to weight and constant one dimensional sweetness to this. Think would be much better on a hand tap or on cask. Not going near this again.

Very dark and syrupy appearance, with 5mm of foam in the glass after a vigorous pour. Complex notes of apple juice and blackcurrent. Super sweet, strong tangy vegemite flavour. Burnt malty finish that coats the tongue. The alcohol content felt higher than the 7.1% on the label.
It was very bitter and so sweet I found it hard to finish, which is a shame because there are a lot of interesting things going on in this beer. I would like to try a more mature bottle of this stuff, as I got the overall impression that it was way too soon to drink it. I've got another HG beer to give it another shot.

Opens with nary a fizzle, interestingly, the bottle is filled almost to the very top, maybe only a centimetre of space between the top of the beer and the cap.

Pours a clear but goopy brown-black that looks somewhat reddish when held to the light. Head is fizzy like cola, and dissipates almost as rapidly. Can't say I'm overly impressed - the carbonation and head in particular look a little amateurish.

Some sweet characters on the nose, with a light whiff of saddle leather and a dark huskiness behind it. Pretty light on the aroma. Reminds me a little of cheap port.

Burnt toffee, a little coffee and a nut butter kind of character on the palate. It's dark, but not particularly roasty, and certainly only minimal bitterness. However, it doesn't really have the body, depth and sweetness to strike out as a bold, gooey, super-sweet dessert stout either. Aftertaste has an oddly organic harshness, again, rather like port gets when it's deadly oxidised.

It's not offensive, but it just reeks of modest homebrew to me. There's something a bit cloying about it too. I can drink it, but I can't say I enjoy it all that much. A shame, because Happy Goblin do some other pretty reasonable brews - I feel like their stout should be a star in their lineup.
