Had this at Northwest Brewing Company. Very dark in color, almost black. Tan head recedes and doesn't leave a trace. Aromatics were fairly roasty with maybe a bit of coffee. Flavor was pretty much the same. Roasted and slightly bitter. Medium bodied with a very dry feel to it. Not bad but nothing special either.

So my In-Laws have moved to a place where I have to pass the brewery to get there. I expect to be filling growlers a bunch.

Slightly roasty aroma with a light hop presence and a decent malty nose too. A little bit of ale yeast fruity esters. Nothing jumps out but its got a little of all the components and no off aromas.

Dark. Described on the brewery board as a brown ale and it's pretty black and only shows light if you hold it up to something. Decent head faded quickly but it's a growler so I'll cut that some slack.

Very malty right off. In fact, the first sip seemed sugary. But then I started to notice good hop bitterness without hop flavor. Very fruity. Some malt too.

Medium bodied, good carbonation.

Overall, a little sweeter than I'd like but not a bad beer. A decent brown ale which isn't really my thing.

update: It has palm sugar added which may be why it's sweet but the brewery says there's not spice or herb.

Served on-tap at the brewerey

A-Very rich and dark brown color. Not much head, and little lacing though.

S- Has nice complex malt and some spicy notes present as well.

T- Well developed taste, balanced malt and hop bitterness. Spice notes flow across the tongue. Strangely, the taste deteriorates as it warms.

M- About average, nice carbonation and finish is on the dry side to make it a little unique.

D- Most drinkable beer from TradeRoute, its my regular if I stop by after work. Seems to be the best developed. The only beer of theirs I would drink if i found it outside the brewery.

The beer formerly known as Pandan Brown Ale has been reconfigured and renamed as Midnight Ale. This move shows Trade Route stepping away from its original niche as an Asian-influenced brewery and pitching itself towards a more mainstream craft market. Midnight is still brewed with pandan leaf and palm sugar, and still showcases that curious and appealing sweet-and-nutty quality of pandan - a tropical shrub with fan-like leaves used in traditional Asian cooking.

The trouble with Midnight is that the pandan has been scaled back to a negligible secondary factor and the new yeast is less kind to the body. What was once a nut brown ale enhanced by fragrant exotica, is now a routine brown with no standout features. The fragrance, carbonation, suds, and overall character all considerably diminished as compared to the original Pandan Brown. That's too bad. This beer was once one of the best exotic ales in the state. It's now timid, watery, frail, and forgettable.
