Came here for dinner and drinks during a recent work trip to Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

Tried the following over the course of my meal:
Miller Brewing Hamm's Premium (draft)
Lupulin Brewing Hooey (draft)

The Hamm’s was average but I was glad to try it (not available in my parts), while the Hooey was one of the better beers that I quaffed on my trip. Had the Ellsworth Fried Cheese Curds and Pan Seared Walleye Tacos to eat; both dishes were fantastic. I can see why this place was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Welcoming, casual atmosphere; I enjoyed the privacy of my booth. Service was solid as everything came to the table quickly. My overall experience was great, and I would come back in a heartbeat.

This is honestly one of my favorite neighborhood spots in the Twin Cities. They always have a solid beer selection, they frequently have one or two rare beers on tap, and the staff is great. Food can get a little bit pricey, and it can get a little crowded around dinner time, but this is a spot that I love to go during off-peak hours and do a little work with a beer or two.

Small and cozy and friendly neighborhood place (not far from Northbound brewpub) with friendly staff and good food (not too fancy but tasty and made with good ingredients). About 30 beers on tap with a good mix of locals, others that distribute to MN, a few international offerings, and a good mix of styles. I had an Odell Friek and an AleSmith .394. Good bottle selection, too. Not a destination on its own, but def recommended if you're in the vicinity.

Busters is the reason I found out about so many craft beers. The staff is amazing and friendly. Although Buster's is a bit small and can be crowded it doesnt bother me too much.
I am eagerly awaiting the return of Buster's after their kitchen fire on June 21st 2013.
Many Saturday mornings I found myself sitting at the bar, at open, with some friends trying out new beers and eating fantastic brunch. Bartenders quickly became friends and made the experience all the more worthwhile.

The previous GM Paul was the main reason Buster's did so well. He knew your face after just a few visits and would always ensure the experience was up to snuff. I was saddened to see him leave.

Come back soon Busters.

Glad I came here! Was lucky to get a spot at the bar and the owner even brought me a stool! Little warm where I'm sitting right across from the griddle n friers, but the door is open and a nice breeze is wafting in. Air is good. Customers on my right are super friendly, ditto the bartender. The cooks are cranking the food out and to my eye, it looks faultless. And they sure are serving a lot of it! Got a tv on with the Olympics on behind the bar; small, good picture, and works for me. Lots of dark wood in the place including ceilings. Good selection of draft and bottled beers. Patio in front is busy but has some open tables. If I lived anywhere near here, I can see being a regular. Probably give it a better score too.

Stopped in for the first time on a Saturday afternoon. This little neighborhood bar is pretty small, but had a nice patio to go along with the inside seating. About a 15-20 solid choices on tap. Went with a Surly Mild while my counterpart had a Hopslam. The bartender was attentive and courteous and prices were par for the course. Not a destination bar by any means, but if your in the neighborhood, this would be a great choice for quality brews and burgers. Didn't have any food, but it looked mostly like burgers and fries, but I do know that they like to use craft beer in their cooking as well.

Incredibly packed that night. Louder than shit which is what the 'atmosphere' consisted of. Beer menu changes daily with menus that change with it - pretty handy. Pretty well varied selection with zero BMC. I didn't have any of the food but I tried my buddy's and it was pretty goddamn good: Onion Rings beer battered in Magic Hat #9, and hot 1554 mustard sauce for ze dipping. Tasty shat.

I think I ended up having a Three Philosophers, Surly Bender on cask and a Hop Stoopid (for $14... my fault though, I should've asked, everything else was well priced).

Buster's a a great neighborhood place, I just moved in nearby and bring all beer lover's who visit over there as an intro to the neighborhood. Really can't say enough about the place, extensive continually rotating tap list which probably numbers in the 20's, "99+" bottle selection, servers are familiar if not knowledgeable about the beers and importantly friendly. The food is fantastic, have tried almost all the sandwich/burgers with the Walleye Rachel being my favorite and the Buster's wings being a great way to kick things off. I have heard the pizza is fantastic I just haven't made it to that part of the menu yet. If you're in the area a stop here is a must!

Buster's On 28th is a small neighborhood bar. It is a pretty nice looking place with wood covering everything. However, it is extremely dimly lite, and the classic rock they play is awful. Their tap selection is among the best in the Twin Cities. They carry a nice mix of local, regional, and imported craft beers with a good mix of styles. The food is good, but nothing to write home about. The service is prompt, and the bartenders seem to know what they are serving. They serve all their beers in the proper glassware, but it is always far too cold. Overall, Buster's is a nice place to have a good beer, but I can't see myself going there all that often. The depressing lighting and bad music are enough to keep me away. If I'm in the area and want a good beer I'll choose Town Hall Tap over Buster's nine times out of ten.

My first impression of Buster's was a good one. A glance over the bar showed an extensive variety of draft beers and when I took a look at the beer list the bottled selection was equally impressive.

From there it was mostly downhill, but not much. The food was fine, though if not for the beer selection I can think of a number of places I'd rather go. Our service was a little slow, but I've definitely had worse.

Bottom line...It wasn't the best I've been to in the Twin Cities, but I'll probably go back.

We took our out of town guests to Buster's for dinner as we were in search of good burgers and good beer and had been hanging out by Lake Nokomis. I was moderately excited to go as the reputation of the place is strong. Initially I was a little taken aback as it seemed that they didn't really want us to stay and eat. The hostess (she may have just been one of the servers, but wasn't our server) kept telling us this or that and then pausing like we were just going to leave and go away. It wasn't the best way to start things off. The episode was exacerbated by the fact that when we walked in we saw the "please seat yourself" sign, but due to the size of our party wanted to give them the option to put us where they wanted. The tables in the back that we would have taken got grabbed by some other folks "seating themselves" and we ended up in the middle of the bar. I tell this story simply because they seemed a little disorganized and not really sure what to do with us. This really surprised me for such a busy place. Once we were seated our server was very good. She knew the beer and was very prompt with everything.

The atmosphere was good, but not really out of the ordinary for a bar that fashions itself a "beer bar." There are many other places that are just as good to hang out.

The quality is where this place begins to separate from some others. Everyone loved their meals. The burgers were great, the pizza was tasty, the walleye was excellent. The beers were all very good as it appeared the list was carefully selected and represented the region very well.

Selection was very good for beer and limited for food. The food items were terrific, but limited. The beers represented the region well. There were some belgians on tap as well. The bottled beer list said 116 but I didn't count. Plenty of taps for the size of the establishment.

Food as I said was great. No complaints there. The side of fresh fruit is a nice option.

The value was decent. Given where it is, the size of the establishment, and how busy it was they can charge the prices they do obviously. I had no problem paying them, but there are other comparable places cheaper and for that reason I would click "a bit pricey" simply to fulfill the role of the reviewer for others who might be "shopping" for a place to go. Its worth the money, but if you are on the cheap side find another place.

To conclude, I feel that I would offer the following advice to families. There were children there dining with their families. There was a kids menu. The kids food was good. I saw at least one high chair. I offer that up simply because overall I didn't get the feeling that kids were "encouraged." I think they are "welcome," but I just don't think they are preferred. This is simply my opinion based on the vibes the staff were throwing off. I could be wrong, but its my opinion.

So here is my story for my first trip to Busters.... which we went to for Surly Week.

We got their and it was jam packed. So we put our names on the list for a table in-doors, but the greeter said we could get a drink and go wait outside on the patio until a table opens up. So we go to the bar and wait around for about 5 minutes... not to bad... before we get out drinks (DARKNESS!!!). Then we go to the patio and eventually get a table to sit down out their, but we informed the greeter we still wanted a table inside. A party arrived 10 minutes after us and put their name on the list and got a table before us which was one of the only parts that made me upset during my trip their.

Eventually we finally got our table and things were great from their on out. I got a Surly Three and the menu said it was a 16 oz glass, but it was brought to me in a 10 oz tulip, so I just talked to the bartender and he was ok with correcting the mistake.

The bar was pretty long with a bunch of tables and booths. No darts, pool, fooz, ect. It was more of a chill place. Nice establishment, however. I also liked the extra of being able to go outside and drink.

The selection was off the hook. It was absolutely amazing. They had way to many beers to choose from. It was Surly week so I stuck to the Surly, but could have enjoyed many of the other beers their.

We did get some pizza and it was amazing. WOW. It was a little expensive, but it was sure worth it!

Overall value was pretty reasonable. $7 for a 10 oz of darkness and $5 for a pint of Three. I will be coming back.

We needed food. That was the moral of the story. After a Saturday night of heavy (great) beer drinking and sleeping in until damn near noon we needed food... and a beer. I had not planned on visiting Busters but it was fairly close to where we left the car the previous night (ok, not that close but whatever...).

Busters, as it turns out, was one of my favorite spots... it was exactly what we needed. The menu was limited, mostly, to sandwiches and pizzas with a few odds and ends. I noticed they had $8 potato chips which seemed oddly pricy. I asked the waitress if they were "chips" as in the English terminology. Nope. Just chips. Well, hell, I had to try some $8 chips... they were damn good!

My ham and cheese panini was great too and the fresh fruit side was excellent. I don't remember what Jen and Luke had but they really liked their paninis too.

The vibe was kind of ritzy bar meets lame-ass Irish pub with a splash of youth coolness. Oddly, that combination works and the feel of the place was warm, friendly with hint of trendiness.

The beer selection was solid... I recall that we consumed some Furious, Two Hearted, Hennepin, and another IPA-type beer. I didn't think the prices were that out of line for the beer, food was a tad high but the quality was very high.

Our waitress was hungover and joked with us about our hangovers... which we thought was funny. Granted, not all customers would have thought so but we brought it up.

Anyway, all three of us really liked Busters. Good food, good beer, good vibe... I'd go back.

I've been to Buster's a couple of times, figured I could look at my notes and write a review.

The atmosphere is nice, usually it is packed full of people...it is small, and retains some neighborhood charm. The service is good, but it can be tough to get a spot in there for dinner, even on a week night, you usually get a crowd that is there to chat, happy hour, eat, and stay a while.

The first time I went, I was quite impressed by all the tap handles and was excited to see what they had in bottles...I quickly realized that they have a moderate selection of pretty common brews. When I have been there the servers I have had are not all that impressive when it comes to knowing their beer.

The food is great, that being said, the decent selection of brews would probably get me back there anyway. I don't go there often, just because it is not in my neighborhood...but if I was within walking distance, I would probably frequent the place.

Overall good for the value, does feel small, slightly above average selection of beer....

Went to Buster's because I picked up a half-price gift card on the internet. First impression was pretty good when I saw the number of taps they had but changed as I took a closer look. While there are many, the beers on tap are nothing more than boring. With a the exception of a few good ones, most are pretty mundane for the Twin Cities area.

After sitting down in a booth, I ordered Delirium Tremens and to my surprise the beer tasted old. Already having experienced this before with this beer, I was not happy. My disappointment was remedied, however, when I received my food: cod empanadas. Expecting fish fried in a out shell, I was pleasantly surprised to find sauteed vegetables and cod inside of puff pastry seated on a bed of roasted potatoes and covered in creamed spinach with bacon.

If not for the food, I would almost not ever come back. But I do have some of my gift card left so I guess I will give it another shot.

I stopped by here with some beer-loving friends. Turns out, this is actually a kick-ass beer bar. Hey, it was new to me!

Atmosphere was the weakness here as the place is narrow and there is little space between tables. Getting up from our booth to head to the john was a little odd. Also, there's a drab darkness that had me down a bit, but the open view of the kitchen was a nice touch.

Service was good. Nothing amazing, but rock solid. She did everything well with out lingering for a second. Nice.

Beer selection was great. I had coffee bender, furious and samiclause. I pilfered a beer menu, so that night they had on tap FE's winter warlock, Shell's #4, Rush River bubble jack, Furthermore make weight, bells, best brown and two hearted, 1554, left hand milk stout, dead guy, ace pear, langunitas brown shugga, ipa and imperial red, chambly noire, old speckled hen, tilberg dba, paulaner hefe, franziskaner dunkel, delirium tremens, stella, kwak, murkphy's red and stout. Now, I don't do a whole lotta drinking in the cities, but this was the best beer list I've ever encountered. Very nice!

Food was good too. turns out they actually serve rare meat! Burgers were good, club sandwich and chicken entre were solid too. Nothing to jump out of your shoes for, but very solid.

I look forward to coming back.

Since the only beer I had on this visit was Samichlaus, it may not be a fair review and I'll update at some point in the future. Also, we only ate the seasoned french fries for the meal. With that said, both were excellent.

The Samichlaus was well served and fantastic. At $11 a glass, you can decide for yourself whether or not this is reasonable. However, the purpose of the trip was to drink this wonderful world class beer for my birthday, I considered it a bargain. The french fries (eaten while the beer warmed, though it was served too cold) were excellent as well. My wife and I are considering coming back for a football game on the small TVs scattered around the cozy bar. It feels like a real neighborhood bar, including the bread coming from the bakery next door. Good stop if you're in the area. If you're new to beer, they have flights of all of their tap beers, which is nice and not always available at beer bars.

I've been scoping Buster's out for a long time. The problem is that you can never get a seat here. The place is always packed. Finally, I made it on a Wednesday afternoon when I had a day off from work. The first thing I noticed is the beautiful decor. Very classic and laid back. Definitely not a dive. My wife and I grabbed a booth near the chalkboard so I could gander at the selection. The beer selection was very nice. Over 25 beers on tap and I think over 100 bottles (I may be mistaken on this as I didn't find the bottle list until I was on my 3rd pint). Plenty of Minnesota offerings w/ a strong Surly presence (Bitter Brewer, Furious, Bender on tap). There were plenty of Bell's, Rush River, Rogue, New Belgium, and other US craft brew options. They also have several Belgians (Rodenbach, Kwak, DT) and some German beers. All were served in appropriate glassware. The food was fantastic. I had a Buster Burger that was succulent. My wife had the Rachael, which she reported was good. Our service was reasonable. The prices were average.

Overall, a nice spot to have a beer. The front patio was opening up and looked very inviting. I will definitely be back to Busters...if I can find a seat.

Tried to go to Busters a month ago on a weekend and couldn't get in. It is seat yourself so on busy days they have no one to help you find a table and you have th just loom over people until one opens up.

Came back on a tuesday a month later. Beer selection is impressive. I counted 28 taps, 5 (I think) belgian, all but 1 micro or foreign. The lone macro had the best beer description I've read in a long time Mich Golden Light "tastes like mich golden light". The bottle selection was huge, but the same as what you can find in local liquor stores.

I was very happy with the beer selection. The waiter brought me samples of beers I wanted before I ordered them and was knowledgeable about the beers I questioned. Beers were served in appropriate glassware too, which is always a plus. Prices ranged from $3 for mich golden light, to $8 for belgians ($5 for some locals, $6 others), and $1 less during happy hours (4-6 m-f)

The menu looked impressive, but whe the food came it was less than we hoped for. The butternut squash risotto taste was drown out by roasted walnuts taht were burned or spinich. We could barely taste any squash. The fungi pizza was all cheese and sun dried tomatoes, I barely tasted the mushrooms.

I woudl recommend going back for the awesome beer selection, but would stick to burgers and fries with my beer next time

Edit - 4 months later:
I've been several times since my original review and NEVER had a good food experience. Even my wife's burger was chared on the outside and raw on the inside. Thier fries usually have half the fries little more than crumbs, and their pasta isn't that great either.

I visited Buster's for the first time recently, accompanied by an old friend who is somewhat more of a 'world traveler' than myself. It was 7:30 Friday evening and the place was packed; we narrowly missed a long waiting list by grabbing a couple of stools at the bar.
After tucking into our first round of pints my friend dubbed Buster's an "uppity neighborhood bar." Of course, he's grown accustomed to the type of neighborhood bar (from Peoria to Prague) that at this time of day is still peopled by older, working-class men; no such scene at Buster's. The place is filled to the rafters with professionals of all stripes, but mostly young and obviously urban. But by any reasonable standard Buster's is still a casual place that leans toward upscale without going all the way. And while casual, it's a far cry from its former incarnation as the Lake Inn (see also the nearby Cedar Inn.) Being a fairly new place it has a rather handsome interior, and struck me very favorably as a bar that would be at home in an upscale hotel, with televisions positioned unobtrusively and the volume kept down (as the place was busy, it was difficult enough to carry on a normal conversations without raising the volume of your own voice a little.)
While we sat ourselves, we were greeted amenably at the bar by the barkeep, who was busy throughout our stay keeping the taps flowing (I noticed him regularly switching out 30L kegs of Rodenbach Gran Cru.) I was also impressed at the frequency with which the man poured samples of his many draught offerings, which seemed very second-nature. For their part, the waitstaff seemed very capable, and were scrambling to keep up with seating, drink re-orders, and the like.
Unless I counted wrong there are 36 taps here plus another seventy five bottled beer selections, and for a place this size that's simply excellent. With several Belgian offerings, a full line of Surly (naturally) and four Bell's offerings on tap I'd think that your average "better beer" drinker has plenty to choose from. Plenty of examples of appropriate glassware in use, branded and otherwise. I didn't pay nearly enough attention to the wine selection (granted, I am no wine geek) but it looked more than adequate, and the thing to remember is that there are dozens of upscale neighborhood bistros with great wine lists in the Twin Cities nowadays (it's about time we had more beer-focused bars!) The bar featured a full complement of beverage alcohol, along with what looked to be a decent selection of top-shelf scotch.
The menu looked to be on-par with the surroundings, and by this I mean a take on contemporary American Casual. As we were only out for a quick pint we settled for an appetizer of onion rings which were served up fresh, hot, and greasy. Kitchen staff of four were moving quickly to keep up with orders, and to my mind they were doing an admirable job.
With burgers in the $7-11 range and taps around $3-$8 (averaging in specials and happy hour), Buster's will strike some individuals as firmly upscale if not downright expensive, but the fact is the yuppies in the neighborhood have been crying out for a place like this. Long having tired of the unreasonably cumbersome task of a voyage across the river (to the Muddy Pig and/or Happy Gnome), I'd think that said young urban professionals would now be happy as the proverbial pigs in excrement. In all seriousness (and in fairness) the prices are reasonable given the clientele for whom Buster's proprietors have obviously planned to cater to (if you find it too rich, there's always Matt's, the 5-8, and maybe the Chatterbox, all a reasonably short distance away.)

Final verdict: Buster's is a place that by all accounts this part of Minneapolis has been yearning and longing for. Moreover, it's exactly the sort of thing that the Twin Cities has long cried-out for more of: a beer bar that offers a good rotation of high-quality craft and imported offerings along with a menu that's a solid notch up from your proverbial 'pub grub'. Along with other examples (e.g. the Groveland Tap in Saint Paul), Buster's is in good company here. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood, and may even be worth going out of your way for. If I had any gripe it'd be minor: ventilation. Here I'll have to agree with what the other fellow said.

Buster's fits the mold of being an excellent neighborhood bar, but not a place to go out of your way for...

With that said let me tell you about the Pros:
1. A great beer selection. Offering 3-5 belgium offerings about 10 local taps including: Flat earth, Summit, Surly, etc. along with another 10 or so craft offerings...totalling about 25 great taps!
2. The place is new, so it has a nice clean atmosphere. With TV's placed out of the way, but watchable if you are alone or want to watch the game over your buddies head.
3. Location...There are very few good bars in south Minneapolis. So if you find yourself in this area with a hankering for a good beer don't hesitate to stop by.

The cons:
1. Poor ventilation, makes you want to burn your clothes after leaving...as everything will smell like grease.
2. Prices can get a bit much. They have a minimal happy hour that only bumps off $1 off of beer and wine. The food selection doesn't leave you with many options for under $7. So a couple of beers and lunch can top over $25 if you are not careful.
