The colour is brown with a deep tint of brown. The low head disappears quickly leaving no lacing resulting in a crystal clear still liquid.
The rather low smell is a bit sweet and malty with a distinct note of brown sugar. Minerals, plums and a touch of Madeira. It is not very mature as expected as this barley wine is brewed in October 2016.
The taste is sweet and intensive with clean warming alcohol, figs, red grapes, orange peel and fine toffee. Passing notes of marzipan and strawberry jam. Medium to full body. The aftertaste is smooth and rich with alcohol, brandy sweets, sweet almonds, orange peels and brown sugar. The long finish got notes of dried fruits, toffee lollipops, matured brandy and apricots.
The carbonation is mild, the very small bubbles are long lived. The liquid is not as thick as expected, but very smooth.
A solid barley wine, but I should have left it in the pantry for another 5-6 years.
