I've been enjoying the Tap & Mallet since it opened a year ago. Many others below have described it's layout and other details so this review will be in more general terms and I won't be telling you what beers I had last time I was there(12/13), because, frankly, who cares?

When Joe McBane opened the Tap & Mallet in Nov. '07 he instantly set a new standard for good beer bars in the Rochester region. The place has a somewhat upscale look but the feel is casual and relaxed. The draught beer selection isn't the largest in the area but is definitely the most interesting and varied. Joe seeks out many uncommon and different beers that you won't find at other beer pubs. The bottle selection is the best I've seen anywhere in central and western NY. I've found the bartenders to be very knowledgable and friendly.

The food is several notches above typical pub fare and reasonably priced, with several entrees in the $12-$14 range. The menu is eclectic and continues to evolve. The sausages in the Sausage and Mash are from Joe's special recipe and are as good as any I've had in the UK.

The Tap's atmosphere is conducive to conversation. There are no TV's and the always interesting music is kept at a level that doesn't interfere with talking. The fact that they only serve quality beer and wine ensures that most of the patrons come specifically for that(and the food) and are not doing the club scene.

A previous reviewer referred to an "in crowd" and getting "looks" from the other patrons and the place being "stuffy". I honestly can't understand what he means. I often go to the Tap by myself and don't usually know the other patrons. I've never experienced anything like that. On the contrary, I find it very easy to strike up conversations with those near me and enjoy meeting new people that way.

The bottom line is that the Tap & Mallet is easily the best beer bar not only in Rochester but in the entire region. It could hold it's own in Toronto and Boston as well.

I’ll start off by saying that this is a very classy place with a great ambiance. They have a wide selection of good beer that is mainly local NY beer such as Singlecut, Interboro, K2, Sloop, and many others. A great selection of exceptional beer however, they do not offer flights which is a shame because they have such a great draft list. Other than not offering flights this place was top notch. Their food was superb and offered a good amount of vegan/vegetarian dishes and some exotic dishes that you usually don’t see elsewhere. Overall a great stop to make but they’re a little pricey but the quality of everything there makes it worth the trip.

When Tap and Mallet first opened, it was one of my favorite beer bars in all of Rochester. Over the past couple of years, it has dropped a few notches. Food is pretty inconsistent and the service can vary as well. They used to have some of the best Bangers and Mash ever! they took them off the menu. Beer selection remains fairly good and they get some select limited releases. Bartenders have either been very knowledgeable or downright condescending.

Neck and neck with The Old Toad for best beer selection in my city.

About 25-30 taps on at any given time, with one cask that's always on. Great mix of local, US craft, and interesting international selections. I've gotten to try so much good stuff over the year I've been going there that I didn't think I'd be able to try- White Oak, Parabola, Great'r Pumpkin, etc.

The service is OK, not great. Table service is generally better than bar service. The bartenders can sometimes have a "I'm better than you" attitude, and regulars get treated much better than anyone else, but it's not surprising, and railing against something like that is like railing against water being wet. It's life. Sometimes the place is a little too dark.

The food is generally pretty good, although we've ordered a few duds. The food is expensive, however. Nonetheless, Tap and Mallet serves up the best poutine I've ever had (I've never been to Montreal, however). Be sure to order the vegetarian gravy instead of the beef gravy, it's that much better, made with mushrooms I think?

Parking is sometimes a problem- the parking lot they have is small, and a lot of people come here. Not the worst thing in the world.

Definitely recommended. If you want good beer, it's here.

What's not to like about a venue that has a long list of many fine beers, including different vintages of the same beer?

Upon entering, there is a long bar on the left that extends to the far wall. In the immediate room there are stools along the bar as well as tables with stools. The number of taps on the bar is always an impressive sight with the beers rotated as the kegs are kicked. The next room over, which is only disappointing for lack of billiards and darts, has more tables and stools.

The selection of beers here is easily the best in the area of Rochester; save, possibly, Beers of the World which is not a pub. You're also able to fill here. Both growlers and a smaller jar-like container whose name escapes me. There is a deposit, but upon return of the container, the deposit is refunded (though usually spent on more beer).

The service is great especially when the bartenders offer suggestions based upon your previous orders. I've yet to order from a table, but I imagine the service is just as robust as from the bar.

The atmosphere is always nice and does get louder toward the weekend and with events; i.e. Beer Week in Rochester.

The food is tasty, but a bit expensive ($9 for a burger).

Overall, if you like beer and like to try new beers when you're out this is the place to go in Rochester, NY.
