This place is in my hometown. I have not been a resident there for over 40 years but when I go back this is a must place to visit.
On the left side of the store they have some of the old macro american lagers that you just do not see much anymore and the prices on some of these (Piels, Schlitz, Black Label) is dirt cheap (like $10.99 for a case).
On the right side of the store they have some of the most expensive cases of beer (many over $100.00 a case).
There are experts there to help you with your shopping. If you are looking for a particular style they help point you to the best values.
This is a very impressive store with a very large selection of local, national, and foreign beer. You can purchase cases, packs, and singles. It's large, well-lighted, and well-marked. There is a bar area with a good selection of draught pours. The staff is attentive and efficient. I was able to purchase several beers which are not distributed in New Jersey. One nice thing about Shangy's is that you can combine a visit with several local breweries.
Great place to find a wide selection, just picked up seasonal cases to split up within a group. The service was adequate and they had most of the beers I was looking for. Great selection of beers on tap for growlers.
Second time visiting this past Monday; first time back in August. Been wanting to check out this place for well over a decade it seems. A nice ride from the Philly-metro getting up there... Well laid out and clean... The biggest draw for me being the overabundance of singles, and a good portion chilled in-fridge. As others have stated, do beware of the packaging dates. First visit came away with 2-3 bottles which were horribly oxidized, stale, etc; but luckily none were too expensive. This second visit netted me quite many singles I'd been looking to review, several imports of which I was surprised to find were canned AND chilled. No drain pours with this 12-bottle variety takeaway... Their prices do border a significant markup for some bottles, but the novelty of having this broad selection is perhaps worth the extra cents here and there... Yet to come away with any growlers, or anything other than singles... No staff has yet approached to help, but no help has been needed so far... For the long drive, I should probably come away with a bigger haul, but I can only power out so much. 3-4 more visits may net me the rest of what I'd like to review (several bottles are just too old to take a chance) before I'll eventually just visit for pleasure... Shame I don't live closer. Could help them a bit with the dead stock.
Big store. Lots of selection. Prices reasonable. BUT DO NOT BUY ANYTHING ON SALE. They are locally just as famous for selling outdated stanky beer as they are for their selection and low prices. They also hate when you try to return anything. Additionally the staff, while helpful, are not well versed in their products.
Was a fan of this place. Called for almost a month looking for founders harvest ale. Was always polite on the phone. Eventually, a guy took my name and said he would hold me a case. Just called today. Said they had gotten it in and all sold out. Nothing for me. I knew it was too good to be true. Would have been better if he hadn't offered in the first place. So now 61 BrewThru it is.
Best beer store in the Lehigh Valley area. Great selection of craft beer from the US and all over the world. The staff is very knowledgeable about beer and are always willing to find something for you if you don't feel like wandering around aimlessly in search of a certain brew. They have both bottles and kegs available and they are both retail and wholesale. Highly Recommend checking this place out if you are in the area.
I have mixed feelings about Shangy's. I've had both: my share of good times and bad.
The is a huge selection of beer from around the world
Quite a few employees working if you need help
Run like a business...doesn't have that warm, welcome feeling I like when I go to other distributors
Ownership can be rude at times
Lot of beer also means lot of out dated beer. Watch for the skunked beer.
Tough to find many of the smaller, local craft brews
Overall I have stopped going to Shangy's and have enjoyed shopping for my beer elsewhere.
I used to live within 20 minutes of this place which was both a blessing and a curse.
There certainly isn't any case distributor in the valley that comes close with selection. It's clean, brightly lit and well kept.
The staff isn't the most helpful with recommendations though they certainly aren't unpleasant- save the one cashier. Nima, the owner, is one of the sweetest guys you'll meet and a nice chat if you're able. If you're looking for something they don't have in stock but are able to order, they'll usually accommodate which is very nice.
It's been said over and over in the reviews but I'll echo the sentiment for checking the dates on the more obscure(especially import) cases. Usually not an issue but it happens.
Pricing is spotty; you'll find some deals and you'll find some high, though that's no new phenomenon.
Worth a trip if you're in the area and want to lighten your wallet,
I've been a Shangy's customer and fan for over 20 years. This is simply the best beer store I've ever seen or heard of. Top marks for quality, quantity, variety, and generally really good value. Staff is mostly knowledgeable and owners are really into good beer. "Welcome to Beer Heaven"!
