An artful creation which began with our HopAnomaly Belgian-Style IPA, enhanced by a 6 month maturation in French Oak Chardonnay Barrels. This version of Hop God is a fascinating, big, bold Belgian-style Tripel hopped in very high amounts to concentrate citrus, grapefruit and floral aromatics in the nose. The addition of Chardonnay barrel aging adds further dimension and oak tannins to an already wonderfully complex Ale – bringing to mind tropical fruits and peach. We know of nothing that compares – enjoy!

A- This beer pours a light bright copper crystal clear body with a rocky snow white head that last and last. There is a sea of microbubbles swirling around in the glass. The last glass took on a hazy body with the trub.

S- The light malt flavor is clean with a green hop note to follow and a musty oak note and monistary yeast character that grows as the beer opens up. The finish is Chardonnay grapes that grow as the beer opens up.

T- The slightly fruity grape flavor has a slightly buttery oak and some olive wood notes that finish with a dry alcohol and green pine hop notes. The fruity white wine note lingers after the finish.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with a soft white wine alcohol bite in the finish.

O- The great blend of Belgian yeast, Chardonnay Barrels and a Tripel is a great combination. Dry mellow oak and fruity grapes and green pine hops really work well together.

From the 750mL bottle into a snifter.

My pour produces a massive head that resembles a root beer float. Cloud-like fluff shoots above the rim of the bottle and forms peaks. The liquid is a cloudy orange and resembles a witbier. Light carbonation trickles upwards and their are large tufts of lace scattered all about the snifter. It's a sexy beer.

This beer is very Belgian. It's heavily yeasty with the fruits and peppers that accompany. The nose really suggests a saison to me. Tartness is present too. I like what I'm smelling but I'm curious where the hops are. Perhaps that citrus I'm detecting is hop-related. I'm even smelling some salt like a gose.

Taste-wise, this beer has a grape-like character, plenty of citrus notes and pepper and yeasty notes like a Belgian. I get some aggressive grapefruit and the sensation on the upper palate that this brings. I even get some of that citrus peel. Whatever hops are here, they seemingly only add to the citrus and don't add any danknss or other hops flavor. As the beer warms I begin to get more sweet maltiness too.

Especially as the beer wars, I get an incredible amount of sensations on the tongue. This beer has yeasty effervescence, tartness, and the bitter dryness of biting into a grapefruit.

A pretty tasty brew here. There's a lot going on, between citrus adn malt and Belgian yeast and saison-like sensations. It's a lot to enjoy.

From a growler from The Brass Tap, Greenfield, WI:

Pours hazed golden amber with a thin head. Trailing lace slides does the glass with some sticking.

The smell is of chardonnay grapes, oak/vanilla, caramel and spicy hops.

The taste is of chardonnay grapes, oak, caramel, cotton candy. Sweetness is balanced by a lasting spicy/herbal hop bite in the finish.

It is creamy smooth. Alcohol is hardly detectable. It has a full body without being too thick.

Dangerously drinkable. It has a strong "Belgian"character. Hops really come through in the finish, but adjusts slowly to it in a balancing way. Great use of the barrels. A wonderful, enjoyable work of brewing art.

If I wanted to drink something that tasted like a cheap bottle of chardonnay than I would buy a cheap bottle of chardonnay. I'd avoid it. I hate that beer has become so pretentious, and now we have people rating this sour white grape flavored beer with an overall score of 91 and 94!!!! Are you kidding me?

This God appears with a deep orange-ish-amber color and an awfully white one-finger head after a three-way split into snifters. The carbonation bubbles are lazy and less than copious. The head retains nicely and leaves crazy spindly, amoeba-like lacing.

First inhale reveals a very original smell. I can detect all of the three main components well- the Belgian yeast, the citrus-y American hops, and the Chardonnay barrel aging. It's a very symbiotic olfactory experience. This bouquet really reminds me of an uber dry white wine, highlighted by citrus notes of lime and orange, along with fresh flowers.

The taste is slightly sweet, slightly citrus-y, slightly woody-dry, and heavily Belgian Tripel. It starts mellow and fruity at the front of my palate, then slowly transitions to a rather biting, acidic, crisp, chardonnay-like middle and finish. The very end of the sip is quite earthy and hoppy dry. Zoso suggested that some wild yeast might have been leached from the barrel, and I think I concur with this. It lends quite a tart quality to the beer.

The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and quite tart and biting on the the bitter receptors of my palate. The finish is very dry and puckering from a combination of the hops and the oak barrel aging.

This was a very interesting brew that I really enjoyed drinking once. I am not sure that I would drink it regularly if it was available to me, but for a one time sipper, I really enjoyed it.

I expected this brew to be too tart for my taste due to the wine barrel aging. It wasn't the case the chardonnay barrels added a sweetness that complemented the hops very nicely. I will pick up another.

A hoppy Belgian in a chardonnay barrel ... look at where beer has gone. This beer's epic head sticks all over the glass as its weathered golden color shows a perfect clarity. Tartness from the barrel, spice from the alcohol and slightly pungent hops make for a very complex nose. Smooth and creamy, the hops jump in with some bitterness and late-to-the-game flavor that lingers. The alcohol is spicy with a hint of tropical fruit. Wood and wine flavors are prevalent from middle to end. This brew's maltiness is thick and bready. Some damn tasty beer ... and dangerously drinkable for its size.

A - Pours hazy with the color of light honey, small head that fades to a wispy covering quickly, moderate carbonation (growler so kind of dependent on that).

S - The oak really comes out in the aroma, which I felt somewhat masked the sweet light fruit that is there. Hard to pull out much more with all that oak aroma.

T - Unfortunately, the oak takes front and center again. There are some good flavors going on here...pears and pineapple, light sweet malt, some floral hops, but they have all been hit over the head with a big oaky stick.

M - Light, lively, crisp, and clean. Great example of how a big Belgian IPA should feel, light body for the amount of alcohol. The carbonation and alcohol warmth clean it up well at the end preparing you for the next sip.

D - Quite drinkable for a double digit ABV beer, would be even better if it were better balanced with hints of oak aging rather than having aged in an oak forest fire.

The bottle opens with a resounding "pop." The beer pours a hazy medium-gold with a huge, dense and creamy white head that sticks around.
Aroma is citrus, funk, winey, candied fruit.
Intense fruitiness in the taste with some funk, some red wine, a bit of pine and a lingering, bitter finish.
Mouthfeel is medium, bubbly and soft.
Great stuff.

The beer pours a cloudy golden-orange color with a white head. The aroma is oak and Belgian yeast with some light wine notes. The flavor is Belgian yeast, oak, citrus fruits such as orange and pineapple and a nice bitter finish. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Hop God opens to full Belgian nose, bursting with bananas and cloves, and supplemented with a bevy of fruit esters, including white grape, apricot, berry, cherry, kiwi, and even touches of pineapple. Smidgens of confectioner’s sugar add a super sweet edge, with brown sugar and vanilla bringing in more sweet textures. Grains bring in bits of toast and baguette, as well as faint remnants of wet wheat and whole wheat dough, but the breads are quite faint, and mainly serve to help bring the sugars into relief. The oak barrel aging adds oaky notes, and bits of the Chardonnay have also seeped into the beer, adding fruity grape notes, like sparkling sweet champagne. For all of the beer’s 101 IBUs, what is noticeably missing from the nose is the expected hop bomb; instead, the hops add delicate rosewater and grapefruit overtones. As a whole, the beer smells delicious, and in many ways is far closer to fruity champagne than beer, with the banana and clove Belgian notes being the main detractor from this impression. What is mostly apparent is the intensity of the sugars, the bottle rim not only sticky, but the fruit esters more full and complex than in several lesser beers combined. The beer is perhaps overly sugary, or at least in need of a stronger secondary aroma to help balance things out, but is still alluring.

On the tongue, the hops are out in full force, attacking the tongue with an unexpected ferocity, pink grapefruit, grapefruit rind, pine resin, and dandelion stem mixing with citrusy pineapple, fermented apple cider, and berry vodka to burn the tastebuds and singe the nosehairs. The intensity of this initial impression cannot be overstated, especially after the delicate and sugary-sweet nose: this beer singes and curls the toes, not only with massively bitter hops, but tart fruits and heavy swaths of alcohol vapor. Rarely has a beer been so different from aroma to taste. Subsequent sips reveal more sugary fruit esters, including cherry, orange, apricot, and the expected banana and clove Belgian notes. Toast crust, wet wheat, and rising wheat dough also add further complexity, as do touches of oaky white grapes. But it is the massive hop/citrus/alcohol blast that easily wins out, dominating the other flavors and occupying perhaps ninety percent of the flavors, and continuing to eat away at the tastebuds long, long after the beer has been swallowed. Mouthfeel is medium, and carbonation is medium to medium-high.

Overall, if the taste of the beer had more closely resembled the aroma, this would have been an amazing beverage. However, on the tongue, the hops simply overwhelm everything, and combine with the high ABV to produce a hop-and-vodka martini overtone that so heavily dominates the beer as to make most of the other flavors quite difficult to detect. The beer is definitely out of balance because of this, to such an extent that even hopheads might have a problem.

L: Pours hazy gold with a light peach tint under a cream colored 3” foam collar that still leaves a thick mond in the middle of the glass after 20 minutes. Produces very thick lace. S: Stone fruits and citrus with a hint of vanilla. T: Big fruity palate blending peach, tropical and citrus with a malt backbone and an assertive hop finish. Although there are citrus flavors on the palate the bitterness is more quinine than citrus. The fruit also has a light chardonnay aspect with very light vanilla. The malt presence is moderate to moderately high but the hop and yeast driven fruit flavors and the bitterness balance the malt well. F: Exceptionally creamy, juicy, soft palate, medium body and carbonation. O: This is a big and bold beer with everything in balance. Th rich, creamy texture puts it over the top.

Pours a hazy apricot color with a very nice frothy white head with excellent retention and lacing.

Nose isn't quite what I expected at first for the style, but after reading the bottle it makes sense. Much like a sour/wild ale but definitely better and not overly sour. Notes of light fruit like nectarine, pear, green apple and floral hop notes.

Flavor follows the nose in that it kind of seems like a sour/wild but doesn't have that unpleasant sour/bitter finish. Flavor characteristics are similar to the nose with bright fruity notes like apple, pear, peach and nectarine along with mild floral hops.

Mouthfeel is light bodied with med-high carbonation that works well here. I'd think it'd be a little unpleasant if it had much higher carb.

Overall it's different yet nice. Not something I'd want to drink on a regular basis by any means, especially for the price. But I think it's a well thought out and executed beer.

Outstanding craftmanship.Wafting wine and hops. Looks great though a light colour. Full mouthfeel. Very satisfying, with the patience of 6 months of barrel ageing, is it a double IPA or a great white wine.Thanks Michael for this and all you have done, and our wishes for your complete recovery.
