Nebraska, United States | website

Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.30%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our first beer in the Reserve Series, Melange A Trois begins with a wonderfully big Strong Belgian-Style Blonde Ale and moves into the extraordinary category through an additional 6 month French Oak Chardonnay Wine Barrel maturation. The essense of Chardonnay permeates while a subtle sweetness remains from the Ale itself. Oak tannins combine to create a fascinating mesh of dry, sweet, and wine-like character. One of our favorites!

Pours a murky copper/yellow color with a towering four fingers of creamy, fluffy head. Like whipped topping on the beer. Beautiful.

The aroma starts out with light spice and clove. Clean citrus underneath. Typical aroma of a well crafted Belgian pale. I do pick up a light hint of the Chardonnay barrels, but it is well integrated.

The flavor featured the Chardonnay barrels much more prominently. This is very tannic and boozy, with a peppery spice and clove finish. Wow, quite bold, one of the most flavorful Belgian pales I have had. The only thing holding this back from greatness is that every bit of the 10% ABV shows.

The body is medium and the carbonation is lower than your eyes would lead you to believe.

Overall, I found this beer to be quite good and was very close to breaking into the realm of world class BSPA's. The booziness is the only thing that holds it back.

750ml bottle poured into a darkness snifter shared with fellow BA's at our last tasting.

pours out a hazy pale golden color with a nice white head. good retention with some lace left behind.

very vinious and wine like, lots of that chardonnay barrel coming through. some phenoly belgian yeast and a bit of sweet candied malt.

lots of white wine, grapey flavors, fruity, phenoly belgian yeast, very similar to the aroma. slightly tart. a bit of sweet candied malt.

medium bodied, a bit dry and tart finish.

a very nice belgian, so much of that chardonnay barrel coming through. very much like the other nebraska beers ive tried.

750ml bottle, Star, unusual find - flew under the beer dorks radar and is readily available

appearance: served in my ale asylum chalice - lovely pour, straw-golden body, heavy white foam with strong retention

smell: funky yeast, tart sugars, white pepper, pear, pineapple, citrus

taste: Hell yeah - this reminds me of NG unplugged saison with some age on it. Great tartness, vinous notes from the chardonnay barrel, oak, pineapple and citrus, dry bitterness, white pepper, belgian yeast. Is that what all beer from Nebraska tastes like?

mouthfeel: light, tart, good carbonation

drinkability: good

A: Opaque straw, wonderfully beady head two fingers thick, after it dissipates there is a fine luxurious lace. It's inviting so much so that several people asked what I was drinking.

S: Fruity and sweet.  Grapes, dank Belgium yeast, and clear Chardonnay character.

T: White wine, peppery like some Saisons, oaky, honey and raisins.  There is a toastiness and a hint of clove.  Quite complex, but strong wine-like character.

M: Fine carbonation, crisp, dry and medium body.

Overall, fantastic!

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #42 (Jul 2010):

This brew begins with an excessive amount of head, but is not gushing. Its hazy golden-yellow color shimmers perfectly in the light. Chardonnay and wood are obvious in the nose, but tropical fruit, nougat and nutty yeast are also in tow. It is silky smooth and a little creamy, with a fluffy, moderate-size body. With a little tartness, it is still very beery. Vinous character from the barrel plays strong, yet mixes well with the malt, alcohol and modest hops. Tartness and wood linger long into the aftertaste. Pretty damn amazing. This is a sipper that does not miss a beat.

Enjoyed on tap. Pours a slightly hazy/cloudy golden straw color with a plentiful creamy head that leaves lots of lacing behind.
The aroma is a bit like a wine-infused Saison with grape and barrel notes alongside a bit of farmyard funk. Also hints of spice and ripe tropical fruit.
Tasty brew with some slight tart grape, some yeasty funk, a bit of very ripe mango sweetness and a hint of mild pepper.
Mouthfeel is light, crisp, dry and refreshing.
Outstanding.

L: Hazy copper gold with a 2” sticky foam collar. S: Fruity, musty, wine notes. T: Light malt, slightly sweet, light funk, light apricot to peach, Belgian yeast. F: Medium body with very fine, soft carbonation. O: the carbonation and body make this beer stand out.

Thanks for sharing this one with me, VaTechHopHead!

Clear golden with a large, creamy, persistent bone-white head that lasts and lasts, eventually leaving thick ribbons and lots of stick down the glass.

Chardonnay grapes and oak dominate the aroma, along with a touch of citrus, and bready sweetness.

The grape and oak barrel character is dominant in flavor as well, along with a hint of an acidic tartness, mild yeast, and sweet bread.

Medium bodied with high carbonation.

Very enjoyable and quite interesting.

Poured from a bomber into my free Stella tulip glass (check 'em out online, you may still be able to score a freebie).

A: Beautifully packaged, wine-like label with a nice description of the beer, ample head, hazy orange color with very nice lacing and retention.

S: CHARDONNAY - from the moment the cap leaves its perch, French oak, orange peel, banana (it's a Belgian).

T: Orange peel, banana, oak, plum, raisin. Surprisingly - not incredibly boozy for a 10% brew.

O: A very nice beer that has taken on a lot of the characteristics of the barrels it was aged in. I recommend trying this at least once.
