Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our take on a robust Americanized Russian-Style Imperial Stout. Moderately hopped to liven up a richly malted classic. This is the base beer for our insanely popular barrel aged Reserve Series variants.

A: Poured from the 12oz can into a pint glass. The beer is an almost black color with just a bit of brown coming in on the edges when held to light. The head was 2+ fingers, frothy and dark tan.

S: Chocolate sweetness, hint of coffee and a bit of licorice. A little vanilla and caramel as well. Hugely malty.

T: Starts mildly sweet with milk chocolate over a bit of coffee, then the alcohol shows up. Slight brown sugar and vanilla. There is a nutty note in there as well.

Overall: This was a pretty average imperial stout for me, but still good. A bit heavy on the alcohol taste but that's to be expected.

12oz can, dated 11/11/16, big circular tab. Pours transparent reddish brown with a medium sized light khaki head. Smells of piney/earthy hops, roasted malt, char, caramel, and some dark fruit. The taste follows exactly with hops, roasted malt, caramel, char, and dark fruit. More hop-forward than a typical RIS. Fairly strong bitterness/dryness and subtle sweetness. No noticeable alcohol. Somewhat thin body and above average carbonation. Overall, while not very fitting of the style, it remains drinkable and tasty for a strongly hopped RIS. Would be interesting to cellar for a year.

Pours an effervescent chestnut-hued mahogany with a pinky of tan head. Above average lacing & head retention

S: Roasty as can be, a little dark fruit

T: Follows the nose, some smokeyness as well, plenty of dryness. Some wooody hop notes along with dryness as this warms with plenty of roastyness, a slight bit of vanilla too. Finishes roasty & dry

MF: Medium body, firm carbonation

Well put together Imp Stout. If you like them dry & roasty, this one is on point

Pours stark black with a mere finger of caramel head. Head is foamy with okay retention and no lacing. Aroma is roasted and toasted malts. Slight bitterness to the aroma, but otherwise good. A sip dunks the tongue in malts, with roasted and toasted malts ruling the day. There is a little hop bitterness to it in the form of earthy hops. Otherwise, it's a straight forward imperial stout. Mouth feel is a little bubbly, but otherwise medium-thick. Overall, a great RIS coming from the can. Despite the bitter hop qualities, it's an easy RIS to drink. At 9%, it's neither easy nor difficult to drink. A solid choice for an RIS.

Served in a 12oz snifter.

I felt like I was drinking an ipa not a stout.

This beer is a thick, dark, utterly black beer. The head is tan, slim, but with tightly packed bubbles. Intense aroma...licorice, coffee, cocoa, even some tobacco. Balanced taste, with lots of bitterness and thick roasted malt flavors. Some smoke and charcoal as well. Full, thick body. Nice Stout.

12 ounce can into snifter, canned on 1/31/2017. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts the whole glass. Thick soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Amazing appearance. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted biscuit, dark bread, nuttiness, smoke, charcoal, herbal, pepper, and pine; with lighter notes of toffee, molasses, dark fruit, leather, tobacco, and roast/toast/smokey earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity dark/black/roast/bready malts, earthy/piney hops, and light fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted biscuit, dark bread, nuttiness, smoke, charcoal, herbal, pepper, and pine; with lighter notes of toffee, molasses, dark fruit, leather, tobacco, and roast/toast/smokey earthiness. Light-moderate roast/char and piney/spicy hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of ark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted biscuit, dark bread, nuttiness, smoke, charcoal, herbal, pepper, pine, molasses, dark fruit, leather, tobacco, and roast/toast/smokey earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/black/roast/bready malts, earthy/piney hops, and light fruity yeast flavors; with a nice hop/char malt/bitterness balance; and minimal acrid/astringent flavors lingering after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/sticky/chalky, and lightly resinous balanced mouthfeel that is great. Slight warmth of 9% ABV. Overall this is a fantastic Russian imperial stout! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/black/roast/bready malts, earthy/piney hops, and light fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on, even with the increasingly bitter/charred/drying finish. Very rich and well rounded malt complexity; nice hop presence, without being too aggressive. A highly enjoyable offering, and pristine style example.

On tap at The Bridge, STL.

A - Poured an opaque, black color with a small, tan head of bubbly foam. It left sudsy trails of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled a little fruity - almost like raspberry. Good dark chocolate notes with a strong roasty character.

T - It tasted of rich roasted malts with dark chocolate and burnt molasses. There was a slight raspberry taste here, too.

M - It was crisp, sharrp and smooth. A medium bodied stout with a clean finish.

O - This is really good. Not sure why it is listed as retired since it was on tap.

On tap at Blind Tiger NYC. Was able to find online that this is a one off non barrel aged version of black betty.

App: Barely top covering dark khaki head over a pitch black head.

Smell: A faint nail polish remover smell. Dark fruits and heavy roasted grains cut through. Molasses are faint. Nice.

Taste: a touch astringent, but very nice medly of stout flavors. Soft roasted flavors, a bit of baker's chocolate, some coffee. Not sweet.

Smooth mouthfeel, great level of carbonation for a RIS. Well done.
