I stop in here whenever I am nearby.. The staff is really friendly and you can usually find some good stuff. It's not uncommon to see a rare limited release or an uncommon import sitting on the counter where they display some of the oddball stuff.

I mostly wanted to write this review so I could leave this tip: make sure you look at everything they've got on the counter and also take a peek at the cases behind the counter. You might be surprised. Last trip, I spotted a case of Cantillon behind the counter...and on another occassion I was walking out when I noticed 2 4-packs of KBS that had long since sold out everywhere else.

Here's a small beer-and-wine store with an exceptionally warm staff that makes it a pleasure to visit. Yes, MBW has a relatively small beer selection but, because they rotate their selections frequently, it's worth stopping by on a weekly basis to see what's new. The beer buyer has an obvious taste for adventurous brews, so you can always count on finding a surprise in the cooler. They offer a beer tasting every Friday, too-- sign up for their weekly e-mail to see what will be available to taste. A particular highlight: they stock many kinds of beer from Berkshire Brewing Company, and they offer them at a discount when you buy them in pairs. And always be sure to check out what they put on view on the front counter. Finally, the staff is very eager to please so don't be afraid to ask them to order something special.

For Arlington, this is a very good beer store, but that's saying absolutely nothing since it is the only one in town. Arlington finally repealed its prohibition era town statutes against liquor store licensing, and thus Menotomy is the first. The store has a smallish cooler full of decent beers, and everytime I stop in, they do have something new on the shelf. Berkshire ales, Rogue, Brooklyn Ales to name a few. The highlight of the store is the Friday beer tastings. It was the only time I was able to taste old Fezziweg by Sam Adams. Ordinarily one can only get this by purchasing the 24 pack winter case. Considering that I almost never purchase more than singles of anything, its just out of the question. Thanks to the tasting at Menotomy, I was able to sample it. The prices are reasonable and the service is first rate. The real down side to this store is its size. For the life of me, I don't know why they chose this claustrophobic building that can't be expanded. They are maxing out on the space that is available and they are forced to be selective. I prefer more floor space and more adventure in my purchasing. Considering this is Arlington's first foray into liquor store licensing, they could have done a heck of a lot worse. Mentomy is a good first step.

Updated 3-20-08: There are now 3 beer stores in Arlington. The one on Mass Ave called Giles Wines of Arlington is probably a little better in terms of selection. The other store called Shanny's on Summer Street is a sorry excuse for a beer store and I'm surprised the town even allowed them a license. I will review Giles once it is listed on BA.
