Notes / Commercial Description:
The story of the Seven Gates comes from rural Pennsylvania, not far from the Spring House Brewery. According to the legend, a mental asylum for the criminally insane stood in the middle of a dense forest. Surrounding the asylum were seven concentric gates, preventing would-be escapees. One terrifying night, the asylum caught fire, causing the inmates to flee into the menacing forest. As the tale goes, the former asylum residents were trapped by the seven gates and eventually succumbed to the perils of the forest. The locals swear that the tormented souls of the inmates will torture anyone brave enough to attempt passage through the Seven Gates of the forest. Spring House Brewing Co. honors the local legend by producing a terrifyingly delicious brew that is as familiar as a friendly forest, yet possesses a mysterious quality that will haunt you from the first taste. The enormous, hopped flavor and the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into each bottle will have you believing that the master brewer must be a direct descendant of the former asylum residents.

from can ( 02.09.17) to spiegelau ipa glass (06.22.17).

A: Hazy lemon skin coloring has a strong and vibrant nature of carbonation rush to the surface. A two finger size ivory-milk toned head is firm in its stance, with a cushy foam appeal, refusing to fall in the short term. Massive dabs of spongy foam deposits are left behind on the vessel.

S: Spicy lemon, and fresh grapefruit pulp reign supreme, juicy, wet and tart in nature. Wet citrus with some hints of sour orange adds to the delight. Some dry hay and fresh barley stalks add backing with a moderate amount of awareness and longevity.

T: Fresh wet citrusy lemon hops are stressed in the beginning as juicy today as when they were first canned. No apparent signs of aging here, grapefruit citrus twang adds some old country time lemonade feel, tart and very thirst quenching. Some dry grains and lightly dry orange peel like flowery hops rounds things out.

M: Crisp delivery on the mouthful, like a good pale should, bubbly and active for the hot summer day that brings out the lively hops here. A solid show of grainy pale malts adds to the base.

O: Overall wet citrusy tart start with some dry'n citrus hop finish. A pale ale, crisp and tart, with cascade like citrus flavor, provides for a tart and thirst quenching summer time slamming session. Open up the seven gates and your wallet for this one, a classic pale ale appeal that is sharp in carbonation and flavor with a high rate of drink-ability.

Poured into an English pint glass, the appearance was a pale burnt yellow almost bronze color with a finger and a halfs worth of white foamy head that concaved nicely to leave some messy foamy clingy lace. The aroma had some sweet lemon pulp, sweet pine, bready malts with a touch of floral sweet hop quality at the end. The flavor leaned towards the sweet side enveloping the piney hops and bready malts. Aftertaste was the sweet along with the bitter and having a little bit of toast coming inside. Finishes with a little bit of lemon hop burn which I wasnt entirely fond of. The palate was between light and medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt appropriate. Overall, for the most part, its a decent APA but the finish I didnt care for.

Pours light steam yello with a bright white head. Nose is of light citrus, grass and light sulfer. Taste of cracker, grasses, citrus and a tiny bit of sulfer(egg whites). Light body with a grainy semi dry finish. Very lager like in appearance, taste and smell with the small amount of sulfer coming through.

Pours golden with decent head. Smells of apple and nonspecific citrus hops. Taste is same with hint of bread and pine. Mouthfeel is a bit thin and carbonated but not bad. Not bad overall. Was greedy when I first got into craft beer. Now it's marginally above average- but marginally above average for a pale ale in today's world still is something to be proud of for a brewery 15 minutes from my home.
