On tap at the Spring house Taproon. The brew pours black in color with a brown head less than a finger strong. The cap does not hang around long as it fades quickly leaving some stringy lace sticking to the glass. A swirl revives the cap which again fades fast.

The aromatics are pleasantly roasty like peanuts blended with a highly kilned grain providing notes of chocolate. The coffee is more subtle than expected but still present beyond the normal coffee-like essence that is present in the normal big gruesome offering.

The flavor is again, tasting like roasted peanuts and bitter chocolate and coffee. The flavor profile is very similar to the normal Big Gruesome. However, the unique component is the sticky vanilla character that is present mid-palate that persists into the aftertaste. the vanilla sweetness draws out a greater focus on chocolate, coffee and the peanut aspect. Dare I say, the addition of vanilla is unique and enjoyable and draws out all the other expected notes of this brew.

This is a medium to lighter bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. I dont know if this is a completely new recipe for Big Gruesome or if this is the normal recipe with just an addition of vanilla and coffee. However, it really seems like that vanilla character really highlighted the other characteristics of this brew; especially the nutty aspect. I have always commented that the spring house dark beers lack in body. However, the lack of body here really increased its ease of drinkability...perhaps they are on to something here...
