The year before the Civil War struck the Commonwealth, a pumpkin blight affected crops throughout Central Virginia, turning the affected gourds into "the bleached resemblance of twisted skulls", according to historical reference. 12oz bottle poured into a goblet

A- pours a deep ruby-amber color with a small foamy white head that reduces to a ring around the edge

S- smells of heavy cinnamon & clove up front, with a big dose of chai spice, a bit peppery

T- heavy spicing follows the nose with a big hit of cinnamon, clove & allspice. Mid-palate brings some peppery chai spicing, the finish gives more cinnamon with a sugary lactose sweetness on the linger. Can't really pick out any cocoa

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a slightly foamy mouthfeel that continues into the finish, abv is hidden well

O- definitely one of the more spice-forward pumpkin ales out there> I enjoyed it but could use a bit more malty sweetness

A: Medium dark amber color, with a very small head.

S: There is a definite roasted pumpkin aroma as well as cardamom, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, and perhaps a touch of allspice. Some brown sugar in there as well as some dark bread aroma.

T: Tons of spice flavor, almost a little herbal. Clove, cinnamon, and light chai. I get a little of the pumpkin, but not a lot from the chocolate until the aftertaste..

M: Medium bodied, with fine albeit low carbonation. I feel like the mouthfeel is a little lackluster.

O: Overall it's an interesting beer, but not anything to write home about. I'd put it in the top 1/2 of pumpkin beers, but I don't think it's at the top.

Poured from a bottle into a shaker glass. Pours a dark brown with an orange hue, head is light tan and dissipates quickly. Smells of pumpkin, cinnamon, and malt. Tastes of cloves, pumpkin, ginger, and malt with a slight spice to it. Medium body. Interesting beer overall, quite complex. Not a beer to drink while watching sports, more of a sitting around a firepit with friends beer. Certainly worth trying once or twice.

Not a bad Pumpkin Ale. Pours a clear light brown color with a lot of light coming through. Small white head and minimal lacing. Sharp aroma of pumpkin pie spices. Taste includes pumpkin pie spices, some actual pumpkin and a malty backbone. Mouthfeel is smooth with a little bite from the spices. This one is about mid-way in the list of the Pumpkin Ales I have tried up to this point.

Near the barcode it says "Enjoy By /8/17B-02"

Appearance: The head is very short and it has a light tan appearance. It has no retention or lacing. Given a minute or two the head doesn't even leave a ring behind. The body of the beer is a nice brown color with a hint of a dark orange hue. It is hazy but I can make out shadows through it.

Aroma: It has a very light cinnamon aroma.

Taste: The flavor of the beer is nice. It has this woody and earthy flavor and as you drink it the woody character will continue to build. Cinnamon makes it through here as well. The woody and earthy character of the beer really works well with the autumn theme. After a while I also noticed this interesting flavor that was a bit like mint and spruce mixed together. It was mostly in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: It has good carbonation and a good solid medium body that really supports the beer. It is easy to drink and I never felt the 8.37% ABV.

Overall: The flavors of the beer are interesting enough that I would recommend it. It has a more earthy focus on a pumpkin ale and the spices are good. I was disappointed that I could not taste any chocolate in the beer despite it clearly stating "cocoa nibs" on the label. If you are looking for a chocolate pumpkin ale then don't buy this. This is more like your standard pumpkin ale but with just an earthy edge to it. The label also mentions that it is made with Scottish Ale yeast and it really does have this Wee Heavy vibe to it. If you are into Scottish Ales I would recommend it because you will probably know what I mean just from looking at it and tasting it. I found that this beer was good enough that I would drink it again but I wish they would remove chocolate from the label. If you are looking to get your chocolate fix this won't do at all. If you want something that is a bit off the beaten path from the standard pumpkin ale then this will do.

Chocolate chai pumpkin, I'll give it a shot. Not as dark as I expected. Aroma is ful of spice. Taste follows but has an odd sweetness at the end which was not welcome.

It's mostly clear, with a color mixing brown, gold, and orange. It has a very small light tan head that leaves areas of small sticky lacing. The aroma isn't bad, but it is strongly chai and little else. The taste, though, has some nice pumpkin and dials back the chai. Not sure where cocoa went but it's not there in either taste or aroma. The body is a little lighter, with a mouthfeel that is mostly smooth with just a hint, of carbonation.

Awesome beer - don't be scared by the chocolate label, the chai and pumpkin flavors are much stronger and balance each other nicely (think like a latte)!

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into an Ommegang tasting glass.

Rich, clear auburn.
It smells traditionally spicy. Cloves, allspice, etc.
Tastes good ! A rich, mellow beer with actual pumpkin-y flavours and a lot ( too much? ) spice.
Smooth and nice.
Overall, really nice!! I don't know that it's exceptional though.

Best pumpkin beer I have ever had. Hint of dark chocolate and actual pumpkin...balanced perfectly with chai spices. Beautiful blend. A hint of metal taste, but not bad at all. My favorite beer of 2017 for sure
