I am a college student in this town, and this is by far my favorite bar here!! Ed tries to keep the kegs rotating so there is usually something new on. He doesn't have any BMC on tap, but does usually have some PBR or other adjunct lager on. There are about 10 taps to pick from, all well chosen. The beers are served in the proper glassware. The bartenders try their best to keep up with the crowd and know at least something about the beers they have. There is a nice selection of bottles as well as the taps.

This bar is a great time when there is a band, but can become very crowded. Ed recently opened the side room which is good if you want to sit and chat with a few friends, because the music is much quieter in there. Great atmosphere with artwork on the walls that changes periodically.

Also... if you are with non-beer drinkers, this place has some great mixed drinks!! and even some decent wine.

(Visited 10/2010): Ed's aptly named bar is located in Winona on 3rd Street several blocks from Main, not too far from route 14/61. Street parking is ample in the surrounding area.

The bar is relatively small, with seating on the right side and a stage in the rear. Funky artwork adorns the walls, and the ceiling is especially cool. It is also fairly dark.

Ed's has about 7 beers on draught from brewers like Bell's, Summit, Grain Belt, New Belgium, and Schell. There are also 40 plus brews available in bottles from many of the same brewers, plus Founders, Sierra Nevada, Rogue, Great Divide etc.

The bartender who served me on my visit was very personable and knew beer, and I chanced in on an evening where they were doing a blind tasting. Unfortunately I had a long drive back to my hotel, otherwise I would have liked to join in.

I did not try any food on this visit, and don't know if they serve any.

All in all this is an eclectic and cool spot that I would definitely frequent if I lived nearby. As it stands I will have to wait to visit should I ever find myself in Winona again.

Ed's No Name Bar is the best bar in Winona-period. Ed's establishment is a god send for anyone seeking real beer, decent atmosphere, live music and local art. Thankfully, there is no television set. The back patio is wonderful, there are often fires to gather around and we play Kubb in the afternoons. The are no Bud Light or Miller Lite signs like every single other bar in town.

Ed battles his distributors weekly in order to bring in the best national and regional microbeers, seasonals and special releases not found anywhere else in town. Bells, 21st Amendment, Ommegang, New Belgium, Two Brothers, Three Floyds, Deschutes, Sierra Nevada, Summit, Surly et al. Also PBR and Grain Belt taps for the cheap ass hipsters. Bottle beer selection is small but impressive, wine is reasonable and well selected and liquor selection is good.

Ed and his staff are knowledgable, friendly and offer great service. Prices are very reasonable and there is never a cover charge for some of the best local, regional and national touring bands. Diverse live music, spoken word, art openings and parties offer something for most and the monthly Beer Club and Homerbrewers' Club meetings are always great and fuzzy at the end of the evening. A great place to session in the afternoon, glass a wine and conversation in the early evening and rock out late night.

Ed's No Name bar attracts diverse crowds of people, young and old alike, students and professors, visitors and locals, punks and rednecks, artists and suits, all with one thing in common-good taste in alcohol and the desire to drink in a nice, friendly atmosphere.

I could not have survived living 4 years in Winona without Ed's. Thank you!

Call me grateful for this place. Always a handful of great brews on tap: last week it was Surly Furious, Summit Oatmeal Stout, Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA, Sierra Nevada Porter, Victory Pilsener, Big Sky Moose Drool, etc. There are about 6 or 7 craft beer taps that rotate - as soon as one is gone another takes its place. The beer is served fresh and cold, and the the staff are all nice people to deal with. The price is reasonable, and there are several other nice perks, like free music (Charlie Parr, Joe Price, Two Many Banjos, Chris Koza all in the last month or so), and occasional beer tastings. This place really has attracted a nice following in Winona, and filled a definite void for the crowd not looking for cheap pitchers with fake IDS, or watching sports on 8 giant screen TVs. There is no TV at Ed's no name bar.

Hands down Ed's is the best bar in Winona for beer lovers. The atmosphere is always inviting and can be very mellow or exciting depending of if a band is playing (usually weekend nights) The bartenders are knowledgeable and helpful if you have any questions. I was happy to see the myriad of glasses for different beer styles (even happier to see that the bartenders knew when to use what). The beer selection is pretty good. There are four always on tap and four craft beers that change up every time a keg is gone. Just had Surly Bender last night, very excited to see that Ed's had some Surly (don't count on it lasting too long) hopefully more will be put on tap. There's a decent selection of bottled beer as well.
Overall best bar in Winona, check it out if you're in town.

I am graduating from Winona State University this month (December), and the only bar I will miss from this town is Ed's. I first discovered it about a year ago when a professor I know was talking about it. I decided to check it out that weekend and was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere there was better than any bar I had been to in Winona, people are friendly and the music is not to loud... Most of the time. On Thursday nights there is usually a band playing and often a good one. They make some of the best mix drinks in town. My girlfriend loves the Manhattans there. Ed also has a great selection of beer. Ed has rotating craft beer on tap and a good selection of craft beer in bottles. The bartenders are helpful and can answer most questions about the beer they serve. The prices are a little high for Winona but compared to the same beer in the cities the prices are great. Over all a great bar I advise checking it out.

Ed's is hands down the best bar in Winona to drink good beer. Not a single tap from Anheuiser, Miller, or Coors. The house cheapies are Pabst Blue Ribbon, and better, Grain Belt Premium. But most folks I know don't go there for cheap swill, but rather one of the 5 or 6 good beers Ed will keep on tap at any one time. The line up is always changing, so the small number of taps is constantly changing, so if you go semi-regularly, it feels like more. I've had just about every style on tap here, IPA, Double IPA, APA, Stout, Porter, Saison, Old Ale, Wheat, Pilsener, etc. with the exception of imperial stout, and I did have that in a bottle. Some of his most common taps are varieties from Bells, Summit, and Rogue, but again, it's always changing. Those of us who frequent Ed's are very grateful he came back from Seattle and opened up this fine establishment. There is no food, but you are welcome to bring your own take out there.

I met Ed. We talked politics over a Tyranena Hop Whore. He's a Democrat. I'm a Libertarian. We talked policy and reason without any emotional BS.
I'll come back again!
Ed says that his best selling beer is Bell's Two-Hearted Ale. Considering this is Winona, that's amazing! There's not too many bars in Winona that have anything more than Milkaukee's Best, Michelob, and Budweiser on tap.
Ed's (No name) Bar is my Winona hangout from here on out.
By the way, I'm adamantly opposed to a Socialist Nation. Vote anything but Democrat!

Winona is a college town. With a population of less than 30,000 there are two universities and a community college. Needless to say, between the dozens of college or "townie" bars there aren't really any which cater to the craft beer-drinking crowd, and even those with a few decent selections typically take a backseat to the swill-drinking Miller Lite-obsessed Midwestern college students..

"Ed's" is one of the extremely rare exceptions. First off, Ed's was opened about a year ago (Spring of '07) by a gentleman who moved to Winona from Seattle, and from conversations with him he was involved with a microbrewery whose name unfortunately I cannot remember. This place officially has no name, but unofficially it has adopted several titles, the most popular of which is named after the owner.

The key factor that makes Ed's stand out in this town is the atmosphere. It is more a lounge than a bar, with soft red lighting, tasteful artwork, an excellent but diverse music selection, small candles adorning every table, and probably the only clean restrooms of any bar in Winona. The environment inside this place is truly relaxing and except for weekends of music nights it is fairly quiet and relatively slow. There is also a patio which currently is a work-in-progress for those of us affected by the new state-wide smoking ban.

The service in here is knowledgeable and excellent, but unfortunately this is an old building with very little space behind the bar. This means that only a couple of bartenders can realistically fit, so during peak hours there is occasionally a bit of a wait.

The selection here is relatively small, but usually excellent. I believe there are 8 taps, and every time I've been in I've seen them rotate regularly. One of them is almost always from Rush River, but the specific brew changes. The last time I was in there was also Leinenkugel's Red, Summit IPA, and a Boulevard though I'm not sure which one. In the past I've seen a few Sprechers, Pyramids, other Rogues, and primarily other upper-Midwestern micros and occasionally more popular European imports like Bass or Hoegaarden. Typically the drafts will cost between two and five dollars, depending on the brew and the nightly special. There's almost always something good on the rotating taps, but if not Rogue Shakespeare Stout is always there. The bottled selection is also excellent and in the past I've seen Mendocino Red Tail, Leffe, Hoegaarden, La Fin du Monde, Trois Pistoles (the last four always served in appropriate glassware), and a decent selection of local micros. There's also a quality selection of wines and top-shelf liquors if you happen to be there with a non-beer drinker.

All in all this isn't anywhere to drive too far out of your way for, but if you ever find yourself stuck in Winona and craving a good beer in an excellent atmosphere, make this your first and possibly only stop. You won't be disappointed.
