SGB's first attempt at a smoked beer. Being a fan of most of what they do, a trip was necessary once this was released. On draft at the pub served in a short pub/pils glass. The brew appears a clear darker amber with a thin off-white head that is quick to fade.

The aroma includes notes of smoked beef initially that dominate. Than the onset of earth with a touch of sweetness smelling like toffee or caramel. It smells strangely more like candy than malt.

The flavor opens with a dry smoked quality mixed with a bit of phenolics tasting like plastic and minerals. That somewhat off-putting character is reminescent of pete smoked malt which eventually fades as more sips are taken. As the palate becomes accustomed to the smoke, the focus gets directed toward the residual sweetness coming across like toffee or caramel.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is smooth and interesting for a first try at the style. I think the residual sweetness of the brew clashes quite a bit with the smoked appeal. If this could be dried out a bit, it would be a real winner. Regardless, I had no problems finishing my glass.
