From Lobkowicz in the Czech Republic comes this diabolically red-labelled 500ml bottle. I love the "D" shaped like a dragon. Nice overall presentation that is eye-catching. The cap pops and into my glass pours the loveliest hue of amber, flirting with reds and cherry and even light orange. One of those beautiful colours that is neither brown nor red. The head is really bright white for the colour of the beer, and it is composed of extremely tight bubbles, which left solid seamless walls of lacing. The lacing is extraordinarily fine, in fact. The beer retained an impermeable layer of creamy foam all the way through. Absolutely flawless-looking Vienna Lager. Ahh, now to the aroma. I have had this beer 4 or 5 times now, and every occasion the smell really blows me away. To me it balances expertly a Dortmunder's candy-sweet aroma and a Pilsner's hoppy grassiness. But besides this there are others note of sugary-sweet candy apple, rum, and raisins. Succulent mouth-watering sweetness actually, but never cloying. Ten times more appetising than a majority of amber ales out there. Toffee, caramel, vanilla, maple syrup, mollasses, waffles, tree sap, buttered toast, and some smells I cannot even describe. Absolutely heavenly malts, and all with a decent hit of grassy continental hops. To me it really combines the best of Pilsner and sweet amber-ale aromas. A heavenly marriage. I could sniff this all night. The taste is, as expected, malty to the extreme, at times like a mouthful of barley, dusty and grainy. Lots of dark fruits and syrupy sweetness here: brown sugar, rum, raisins, butterscotch, and toffee. The finish leaves only a trace amount of any hopping, and the aftertaste is not shy on sweetness. Certain elements of the taste remind me of some Scottish Wee Heavys I have had, almost as if the beer has been aged in oak. This is all about the malts, fresh and full. At times roasted nut flavours. Lovely. Truly lovely. The beer's carbonation is incredibly smooth, very low. Full-bodied. Despite the brazen sugary feel of the malts, this is an incredibly quaffable lager. Despite the other reviews rating this as only "worth a try," this is a masterfully executed lager. One of my favourite lagers ever. More, please.

This beer poured from a 500 mL bottle into a pilsner glass a clear amber colour with a frothy, one-finger head that quickly dwindled to a ring.

The aroma was an assertive mix of grassy hops and caramel from the malt. Some spicy hops snuck in, and overall I was impressed by how distinctive the beer's aroma was.

The hops and malt battled nicely for my palate and there was some added complexity in the flavour — bread and biscuits in the malt. It finished dry with some slight bitterness. It would go well with Mexican food — better than Negra Modelo....

Pours a fairly deep bronze colour, with a more than adequate foamy tan head. The head slowly falls to a thin cap, but doesn't entirely go away.

Smells of caramel and grains, relatively malty aroma for a lager. Noble hops are notable in the aroma as well. A pretty appetizing smell.

Biscuits and caramel carry a fairly strong malt profile across the front of the tongue. Something fruity hits in the middle, bringing berries to mind. The finish seems very much like the only other beer I've had from this brewery, the Lobkowicz Baron, though it has been quite some time since I've had that beer. All in all it is quite pleasant.

The mouthfeel is full, almost chewy, and the carbonation is lively. Altogether it works well for this beer.

I've had this at a beerfest before and it really didn't work for me then. I'm glad I gave it another shot.

(note: reviewed from notes)

"The brewmaster's beer" seems a bit off for this brew, at least to my American microbrew expectations of complex, varied flavors. When giving ratings for Demon's appearance, smell etc, I had to steel myself to keep the "styles are highly subjective and open to interpretation by the brewer" rule in mind. I dislike some of them, but can recognize the style's high points.

It pours and smells like a standard dry Czech pilsner. Looks amber-tan, with a bare head like cirrus clouds. At first, it shows a smoothness reminiscent of Guinness in its mouthfeel and traces of bitter, and a berry-like tone in the aftertaste. Interesting without much complexity, and definitely too sharp for me--after every swallow I had to shake my head because it is so carbonated and the taste of the alcohol is so strong. I felt attacked by the beer instead of experiencing it. Would be tasty if it wasn't so harsh.

From a 500 ml brown Euro bottle, nice simple yet effective design on the label (a classy kind of macabre), best before date stated as 06.10.06.

Pours out a well-carbonated burnished copper hue, large spongy cinammon toned head with decent retention. Sticky lattice-work of lacing. Mild aroma of toasted biscuit malt, some dry wafer as well--it's all about the malts here folks, as mellow as they are. The flavour has its own charm, and I mean that in a good way. It's subtle and refined. Starts with a quick dose of metallic grain, then blends seemlessly into a more biscuity caramel malt profile, finishing with a crisp grassy hop, with a lingering aftertaste of copper and herbs. The mouthfeel is surprisingly dry, almost metallically smooth, quite refreshing. I'm impressed by this stuff, it's not bombastic, but holds its own and retains its character in a refined manner, what I see as a mark of craftsmanship--to not go too far overboard just for the sake of doing so. This is some great stuff, and found first at a CO-OP liquor store to boot. Shall be picking up more of this stuff, along with some more Baron, both are good finds from this Czech brewery.

Tall, brown 500 ml bottle, with best before date on label: The Brewmaster's Beer. Had tasted this at a couple of tastings, and was impressed with the small sample.
Pours a brownish copper color, large foamy light tan head with good retention. Spider web of lacing looked very nice. Mild aroma of toasted malt. The flavor is well balanced with caramel malt and floral hops. The mouthfeel is dry and clean. Very smooth, refreshing and easy to drink.

got this bottle in a trade with stephenlouis. thanks stephen!

pours a nice copper colour with a quarter inch of fairly fine head. the head drops slowly and leaves a thick ring of lace.

aroma is ok. dms and a bit of diacetyl initially. once it has had a minute to breathe there's a nice maltyness there. bread and biscuit malts. hint of smokeyness.

taste is ok. again there's that initial bit of dms, but then a nice mild bitterness and a pleasant malt body. slightly fruity.

mouthfeel is ok. decent body and the carbonation level feels right.

drinkability is ok too. a decent beer, but nothing to spectacular.

Démon is a Czech statement! Pours with 1-2 fingers of foam, and with a nice reddish color. I had some difficulties to pin down the smell. Finally I decided for acidulous apple or pear. The initial taste is also one of acidulous apple, especially in the palate with a hoppy aftertaste in the back of the mouth. Démon is a bulging and robust brew making it's little brother Knize from the same brewery pretty bleak

Got it from Czech R. 0,5L bottle.

A - Clear dark orange color, with darker two finger foam. Lasting couple of minutes.
S - Weak aroma of malt,nothing special.
T/M - I know that most of "Demon" named beers are Strong lagers. This is also similar in taste. Warm and bitter, low carbonation, very sweet and sticky aftertaste. Mostly caramel malt in taste.

O - Personally i do not like this type of beers. So,i will pass this one next time.
