What's Inside: A pretty red to brown with dissipating carbonation, light lacing and a medium head that stays at 1/4 to 1/2 inch.

Smell: Slightly sweet, reminiscent of banana bread, chocolate, bison grass. Inviting, but not powerful.

Taste: Mocha, sourdough, bitter hops, a slight citrus entry.

Mouthfeel and More: A very good quality brew. Complex, with a lightness. A nice bit of carbonation without being a bath bomb. A slightly bitter aftertaste.

Overall: This is a schwartz for sure, and it stays true to its class. Make no mistake- this isn't the beast you may expect from a North American brew, but it is solid, well-crafted tradition in a sessionable 4.7%abv. This is a working man's beer that you can drink warm or cold, and it's refreshing each time. An above average brew, a gem in its price point ($2.30/500ml), and one I frequently purchase. Worth a try- just don't expect a monster.

Pours dark brown, some reddish hues, one finger fluffy tan head that stays around for a while.
Smell of caramel, dark malts, faint cocoa, touch of dark fruit and some ripe banana, salted grains, faint cinnamon, low stewed hops.
Taste starts rather sweet, with watered down chocolate and caramel, hinting a bit of coffee, and decent dark fruit esters, the extra banana and even some apple and cherries. Still, the sweetness isn't syrupy and cloying, but rather flavourful, all on top of toasted grains. Some woody and nut flavours, finishing with low hop bitterness, that's leaving a perfectly dosed sweetness in the aftertaste.
Light, almost watery, smooth carbonation.
Has quite a few different flavours, all nicely integrated, and very (maybe a bit too) quaffable.

Damn, it's difficult finding your Czech beer on Beer Advocate!

Served cool from 500ml brown bottle into straight pilsner mug.

A) Very dark reddish-chestnut brown. Whitish film only, no real head developed.

S) Faint whiff of sweet warming malts, if you really get your nose in there. Below par.

T) A lot better than the nose. Deeply roasted malt is right there. A mild bitterness comes from the roasted malt only, and none from hops, as per the style. Actually, pretty good.

A) A bit of a body to it, well within the style parameters.

O) Although not on a par with the best Munich dunkels, this stands up on its own merits as a tasty nutty burnt-malt lager. A good one to chug down and not expensive; recommended to any dark lager fan.

A very pleasant surprise find at my local bottleshop. Coca cola pour and appearance - there was no head retention, but decent enough carbonation. Not my ideal look and feel. The aroma was metallic, with a bit of sweetness and dark bread. I'm not sure if it was just the bottle I picked up, but the overall impression wasn't as favorable as previous reviews. From a flavour perspective, there is plenty happening here. I really like the toffee, milk chocolate and tea flavours that swirl in the glass. Overall, very interesting, and extremely well-priced. I look forward to a return tasting to see if this bottle was a bit "off" or lacking freshness.

Dark cola appearance with minimal head and a bit of lacing. Malty chocolatey smell and a slightly sweet taste juxtaposed by the maltiness creating an almost molasses like taste. The feel however is quite smooth though a bit thin. Overall a great beer for the price point, but not an out of this world "must have" beer by any stretch.

Presentation: 12 oz. green bottle with no freshness date.

Appearance: Deep brown with hues of russet and red. Lace retains well leaving a patchy clusters of head in its trail.

Smell: Obvious hints of chocolate and caramel (almost toffee like) reminds us of fresh sweet dark bread.

Taste: Velvety smoothness makes for a plush medium body. Malts are clearly dominant with a full palate of sweetness, grain, chocolate, coffee and bread ... a cookie like malt profile. Hop bitterness is there just to keep thing on an even keel, lending a light spicy flavour which lingers into the after taste with some bready grain flavours.

Notes: A delicious dark lager, a great pick if you are into flavourful malty lagers. A great pairing would be with some rare roast beef on a dark rye with spicy mustard and pickled onions.

Pours a deep ruby with a brownish tint with not much head to speak nice color but no head,I like the aroma I got some french roast coffee grounds and some cookie dough with a touch of sweetened chocolate ,pretty appetizing.Alot of flavors going on in this relatively simple beer some dark choclate notes with dry earthy finish almost like a nut brown ale,it was close to becoming overly sweet until the dry nutty finish saved the moment.Pretty watery though for a beer with its richer flavors, not a bad beer maybe a little tweaking would make this better.

A choice of three "noble" Lobkowicz brews showed up this weekend, I picked the Baron first...surprising that these aren't marked up in price. regardless of the quality.

Dark, clear chocolate brown with a tan 1/4 inch latte-like head that lasts about 45 seconds and laces in wide incomplete drips. Malty aroma, heavy on a carob and butterscotch impression with a slight hop prickle. Flavor follows aroma closely, a sweet carob sense, malted milk, nutmeg early with a rapid falloff to cane sugar. Finishes softly and on a "rain water" side with only a balancing sense of Saaz hops, if its detectable at all. Some similarities with a San Miguel Dark, but a little too sweet overall, especially as the sips continue on. Decent, but I wouldn't want more than one.

The Baron: bottle states “Premium Czech Dark Lager.” Presented in a half liter (about 17 ounces) brown bottle. No freshness date, no abv., on bottle. Tan head, quickly collapses to skim on top. Deep dark ruby color when it’s held up to light. Mild burnt toast, unpleasant, aroma. The taste is rich with powerful malt, almost cocoa taste. Long aftertaste. Overall, I’m not sure it was a bargain even at 99 cents a bottle.

This one pours a clear, dark, mahogany with a good head. There’s a bit of sulfur in the nose underneath the dark malts and a bit of nuttiness. In the flavor, it’s cocoa powder, raisins and brown sugar. The flavor is kind of dusty or powdery, but I’m not sure quite how to describe it. It’s ok but nothing special.

Pours out a deep purple-brown, with a tan head that hangs around. Smells of chocolate and coffee with some carmel notes. Tastes very much like coffee, almost halfway to a stout. A little sticky in the mouth, but that doesn't subtract form this beer. A very tasty beer, something like I have never had before.
