sampled on tap at hopcat jan 23/2010 as part of their 2nd annual extreme beer fest.

pours nearly opaque dark brown with a thin layer of very fine light brown/dark tan head. the head quickly drops to a thin ring around the glass and leaves a few spots of lace.

aroma is great. vanilla and raw oak. caramel and butterscotch. anise. dark chocolate. light alcohol. toasted multi-grain bread. earthy. this one seems to be big on malt and not overly concerned with hops, but that could be due to some time aging in a barrel.

taste is good. just over medium bitterness level. light alcohol. caramel and toffee. bit of butterscotch. dark chocolate. bit of coffee. toasted whole wheat bread. biscuit. bit of cracker. anise. vanilla and a bit of bourbon. bit of light citrusy hops. maybe a faint trace of pine in there too.

mouthfeel is good. nice big body. fairly smooth medium carbonation level.

drinkability is great. tasty and well balanced. bends the lines of what i'd expect in an american barleywine - i'd be more inclined to label this as an american strong ale - but whatever you call it, it's pretty tasty. nice barrel character that actually makes me think of older viscosity. good stuff, but a touch warm. with a little more time in the cellar it would be even better.

Had this yesterday while visiting my girlfriend in Grand Rapids. Served to me in a 12oz snifter glass.

Color was deep amber with a thin, off white head.

Smell had citric hops balanced well with a sweet, brown sugar malt smell. The alcohol is present in the smell as well.

Taste is great, balanced, a bit fruity, brown sugar. Flavor is full and robust. Many things going on that I really can't identify but they are very good. Tons of flavor. Alcohol flavor is masked almost completely. You can't hide that heat though.

Mouthfeel is a bit rough at first. So much alcohol is hard to mask. Can make the brow cringe a little. No carbonation. Heavy, thick and full. As it should be.

This is my second barleywine. I found it to be superior to Old Ruffian. It had a better balance while still providing that barleywine taste that I expected. Not so heavy in the brown sugar and alcohol side. I highly recommend this to seasoned beer drinkers but certainly not casual ones.
