Thick and grainy. So murky it's like a wheat wine swamp. Slightly hoppier than the average Hefe. Big German flavors but more on the clove side than the fruit. This has a rather harsh aftertaste of raw grain and an earthy dank flavor.

On tap at HopCat in Grand Rapids Sept. 12, where they called it Zugspitze Weizen. So whatever style that may be, it tasted like a murky Hefeweizen to me. Fairly sprightly with a sharpness to it. Not my favorite of the weizen family styles. Starts out rich and mouthfilling but wears out its welcome.

Enjoyed on tap at the brewpub. I might have enjoyed this more knowing it was more of a weizen and not being told that it was a hefe. It did not hit the spot as a hefe. Malty and a bit bitter, with a soapy head. Decent drinkability, but not a great showcase of hefe.

This brew was served from the tap at HopCat in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It arrived in a generic Weizen glass, showing a murky, pale golden brown coloring. It put up a half finger head of eggshell bubbles, leaving streaks of lacing all around the glass. The clarity was very hazy, but with no appreciable sediment. Carbonation appeared to be mild. The aroma sang of wet wheatiness and bready pale grain, sweet orange flesh and peel, coriander spiciness almond nuttiness, lemony sourness, and light bubblegum esters. Our first impression was that the flavoring showed a nice malty base, with a good mix of spice to boot. As we sipped, the taste opened with sopping wet wheatiness, mossy musk, sweet bubblegum esters, pale grain, honey grit, and light florals. The wheat enhanced to the peak, giving more gravel, chewiness, muck, and mineral. Finally through the finish we were given the spice we were waiting for, with vanilla coolness, bright coriander, smoked ham, dried orange peel, and raw cinnamon stick. Mixing to balance were more bubblegum esters, red cherry sweetness, almond oil, and lighter tutti fruitti sugars. The aftertaste breathed of coriander, allspice, juicy bubblegum, wet wheatiness, mildly Belgian pale sourness, white flour, and mild clovey phenols. The body was light, and the carbonation was medium. Each sip gave decent froth, cream, pop, smack, and glug, with wet and lightly metallic coating left all around the mouth. Soft dryness came eventually, but came nowhere near tannics or astringency. The abv was appropriate, and the beer drank well.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this beer was its flavoring. The malt base was hearty, and to make things better, there were bright spicy inclusions. The latter, however, felt like a bit of an afterthought, as if they were trying to bolster something that was just standardly mediocre. The nose and the feel were also just okay, affording drinkability, but skimping on general cohesion and polish. This is a nice beer if you’re not looking for anything special, and it should certainly suffice on a hot summer’s day.

This is a hazy, cloudy golden color. It has a fantastic aroma of banana and cloves. Tastes of banana, clove and a smooth wheaty finish that lies on the sweeter side of things. It is, dare I say, refreshing? One of the better hefes I’ve had in recent memory.
