This brew was served from the tap at HopCat in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It arrived in a generic tulip, showing the deepest golden brown coloring. It held a two finger head of creamy but tight eggnog bubbles, showing okay retention. Patterned, spidery lacing was left around the glass. A murky haze permeated the clarity, with no sediment noted. Carbonation appeared to be moderate. The nose filled with bright spice of coriander, gingerbread, cinnamon, and black pepper, with carrot juice, bittered pales, and wet wheatiness. With warmth came fruity raspberry tartness, faint earthen hops, and flecks of adjuncty, mineral-laden grain. Our first impression was that the flavoring gave very nice spicy inclusions, as in the nose, and left burn across the tongue and up through the nasopharynx like too big a bite of wasabi. As we sipped, the taste began with fresh ginger bite, pale maltiness, wheaty wash, aluminum, pistachio butter, and vegetal radishes. The middle came to a peak with deeper grain of caramel bite, crystalized ginger, leafy spinach greens, vegemite, metallics, and chalky dryness. Washing through the finish was more radish, yam starchiness, grapefruity hops, thyme, oregano, and dried citric rind. The aftertaste breathed of wasabi, cayenne pepper burn, pale and thick caramel malt syrups, raw peppercorns, and soft habanero flesh. The body was medium to full, and the carbonation was medium. Each sip gave big froth and creaminess, but with lesser smack, slurp, glug, and pop. The mouth was left oily and coated, with dripping wet salivation to help cut the spice. No real astringency was appreciated. The abv was appropriate, and the beer drank easily.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this beer was the authenticity and sheer variety of spice throughout the flavoring. In particular the ginger was bright, spicy, and genuine, echoing around the palate long after the sip was gone. The nose, on the other hand, was a big basic, but showed enough strength of malt to blend well with all that spice. The sip was pleasant and contributory, with less cleanliness so as to allow the palate to have enough time to enjoy the experience. This is a hot, nicely spiced beer, and should definitely live up to your expectations.
