500ml bottle into a snifter, 2006. Popped it to celebrate review #300!

A: Pours a viscous dark ruby with no head.

S: Thick with richly oxidized dark fruits - prunes and raisins. The alcohol gives the sweetness some depth.

T: The taste is lighter than I was expecting, with the booze more hidden than the Copper bottle I've had. Lots of vanilla and grape skin and sweet port and raisins.

M: Somewhat thick and flat.

O: Copper seems a little deeper to me but this is on about the same level. Insane beer.

Poured from a 500mL corked bottle into a snifter. 2006 Vintage.

(A)- Pours a slightly hazed but vibrant caramel colored amber with some ruby red highlights to it. Quite flat in appearance, but that was expected going into this one.

(S)- A great combo of a deep caramel and grape. Very reminiscent of a superb tawny port. Ever so slight hints of a musty oxidation and leather note. An extremely inviting aroma.

(T)- A magical elixer in short. Reminds me of a sherry combined with a tawny port and a splash of mead. An absolutely superb and dynamic flavor profile that dances between sweet and rich caramel, toffee, grape, and honey. It then just ever so slightly dives into some dry, leathery and tobacco flavors as it warmed up and opened up more in the glass. There is just so much going on in this that my description fails to really tell how dynamic this is.

(M)- Almost totally flat, but a purely sexy and magical mouthfeel despite that. Pure velvet in the mouth; no burn with such a dynamic flavor profile. This is an absolute orgasm in a glass.

(O)- Such an amazing beer. If it were not for the price tag, I would seek out and get a case of this for the cellar. Already fairly old, but could go for countless years yet. This was a huge surprise for me and one that I will gladly seek out again and even try the variants. Just magical and a pure joy to drink; I did not want it to end.

$9 sample from a fresh bottle at Mondiale 2010. I simply had to try this and see if it was chestnut heaven. And yes, it was. Pure chstnut juice, though of the consistency of wine. Rich, good mouthfeel. Dark brown, no head. Very tasty, but cloying sweet. Chestnut honey aromas.

Review #500 - decided to finally crack this one open. 2006 vintage:

Pours a burnt caramel brown with a haze of sediment. No carbonation to speak of; an oily ring of legging leaves behind obvious sheets of alcohol glaze. It's about as still as a beer could be, looking more like a glass of cognac than a glass of beer.

Massive on the nose... waves of vanilla, caramel and other bright dessert notes. Dry tobacco, molasses, and rotten oak. Not as obviously sweet in this respect compared to Etichetta Rame. Overripe cherries and dates, even a bit of red grape. You can pull out some heat from the alcohol if you really snort at it.

The syrupy fruit sweetness turns up on the palate - fresh apple flavors, loads of dates or figs, drenched in fermented caramel and vanilla. Plum brandy, creme brulee... lots to think about. Drinkability is pretty much zero; the flavors evolve long after each sip. It's thick, it's sweet, it's incredibly dynamic.

Give it a go if you're curious, but don't expect to finish the bottle in one sitting. Split it with friends, or stick a cork in it and drink it over the course of a few weeks. In my experience these beers hold up perfectly fine to that sort of treatment.

2006 Etichetta Argento (Silver) split with westcoastbeerlvr last weekend.

Clear tawny brown, more amber toward the edges. Leggy and syrupy with no carbonation.

The nose is hugely reminiscent of aged port. Oxidation has given the beer a nutty, leathery and vinous aroma. There's a bit of cocoa buried in there, faint alcohol, maple syrup. Very sweet, complex and rich.

The palate opens with maple syrup sweetness, followed by vinous port notes, nuts and cocoa, earthy leather and tobacco. Alcohol is barely noticeable. The mouthfeel is outstanding, rich but not cloying, completely still. The finish lingers for minutes, leaving vinous and nutty flavors sticking to the palate. One of the best showcases for oxidation I've encountered, truly a great beer.

2006 vintage shared by Steve.

Pours a flat, reddish brown with some particulates suspended in the body. Good legs. Nose has ethanol initially, but some sherry and port like notes as it opens up. Definitely positive oxidation character. Some oak, vanilla and dark fruits. Tastes of figs, brown sugar, vanilla, molasses, maple syrup, some alcohol and sweet liqueur-like notes into the finish. Some heat, with a dense syrupy body. Zero carbonation and definitely very spirit-like. An excellent dessert-y beer, I can imagine certain food pairings with this being immaculate.

What are huge surprise. I had seen these around but had been scared off by the price tag. Poured an orangish-brown into a tulip with no head, obviously. Smell was lots of sweetness and no alcohol whatsoever. Mouthfeel was thin, which was not expected, as in the glass it looked real syrupy. Taste was good, a huge kick of cognac, with no heat, but the finish was a crazy caramel that went on and on. Overall, a good beer but not great. Something that I really enjoyed but I would have for sure been disappointed if I purchased it myself. Reminded me a lot of Sam Adams Utopia, and is a decent substitute for the price.

A: The pour is amber in color with no carbonation or head. Didn't realize this was a Lost Abbey beer (badum tss).

S: The only flaw here is that there is some booze up front on the nose. Otherwise, it's a wonderfully well integrated beer with tons of maple syrup, vanilla, caramel, and chocolate. Definitely very sweet and very oxidized, but very appealing.

T: The flavor is even more rich. Caramel, maple syrup, and toffee provide an excellent base of sweetness to the beer. There are lots of fruit notes here, especially sweet grapes. Even some vanilla and chocolate.

M: The body is medium and the beer is flat, but it works fine here.

O: Absolutely fantastic stuff. It's still a bit out of my price range, but I loved this beer.

Poured by the glass during the Italian fest at Max's.

The beer pours an orange amber brown color with no head retention or lacing to speak of. In other words, this beer is completely still.

The nose is pretty impressive, though I thought the copper version to be superior. Still, I get considerable brown sugar, cherry, port wine and raisans in the nose. The flavor profile is even better, and really, this beer has more in common with a fine port than it does with any beer I've ever seen. The beer is quite sweet, but is not the least bit heavy or tiring on the palate. The finish is fairly full and is unbelievably long in this incredible beer. So rich and fine... this really pushes the boundary as to what one can expect or find in a beer. Amazing...

Looks pretty much the same as the Copper. Less oxidation than the Copper, but still fantastic. More sharp, sugary sweetness, nice sherry, raisins, less date and slightly prune-like. The palate opens full, sweet, mildly sharp. Toffee, mild butterscotch, honey, golden raisins. Long, sweet finish with honey and toffee. Nice sherry and port notes on the finish. Excellent, highly recommended.

Xyauyu, Reserva Teo Musso, Brewed in 2006, 13% abv. (silver etching).

With unrivaled sweetness, complexity, and depth; the Xyauyu series of mythical ales is a beer epiphany with each and every sip.

The still chestnut-brown syrup pours with an oily and viscous pour into the snifter. A mystic glow of rust, amber, golden, and ruby colors carry a nearly opaque look- the beer seems ideally of port wine-at least to the eye. With the absence of foam or lace, the beer subs in tawny legging that clings to the glass, providing a clean sheen.

Succulent and savory aromas of warm alcohol oils, stone and dehydrated fruit, deep molasass and brown sugars all meld into the most wonderful of blends. Delicate earthiness of peat, raw tobacco, and fresh leather further support the growing complexity of the nose.

Sweet toffee, brittle, black-strap molasass, maple syrups, and buckwheat honey surely satisfy the sweetooth as very few deserts can. Plumbs, dates, figs, raisons, prunes, and grapes all give roundness and variety to the sweetness, absorbing some of the heavy-sweet brunt. Added sherry and soy sauce oxidation contributes many more savory flavors than subtract. Again, the herbal tobacco, leather, and peat flavors piggyback on the fruits and give a glimps into the fading hop contributions. Tawny flavors of rum-soakes sandalwood with a musty taste of rustic, weathered oak. Flavor descriptions of this beer are infinate.

Silky, velvety, and cloying sweetness are all welcomed in a very decadent mouthfeel. The sweetness and alcohol coats the mouth and seemingly melts into the soft tissues of the mouth for a long and savory sweet feel that lingers well into the next sip.

Every once in a while, an epiphany in beer appreciation happens. This is how Xyauyu presents itself. Masculine. Refined. Endearing. It transcends the tired notion of what beers should be and truely exhibits promise for the future of beer making.

2006 Etichetta Argento (Silver) enjoyed on an overly warm summer evening. Poured into a snifter.

A: The color is an orange tinged copper and it pours near flat, with a few stray bubbles from the hard pour that fade instantly. A swirl brings a thick collar to life an inch up the glass, and this yields a cascading string of pearls. As beers like this go, this looks excellent, inviting.

S: The nose is infinitely complex. I get a lot of toffee and caramel with elements of plum and maple syrup. Brown sugar accompanies leather, nuttiness, and a smooth and complimentary oxidation quality. Alcohol is very faint for the robust ABV. I detect a citrus quality that reminds me a little of Grand Marnier. Amazing.

T: This bears a strong resemblance to Port or Madeira, with pronounced plum and vinous notes accompanying leather. Toffee melds with caramel and brown sugar. A light oxidation character compliments tobacco and earth. For 13.5% the alcohol is criminally subtle. I get some of that citrus character that I got in the nose, reminding me of apricot or an orange liqueur like Grand Marnier. This is outstanding stuff.

M: Lower full in body and completely still. The mouthfeel is sticky and smooth with ample alcohol warming on the palate.

Overall: A pricey bottle, but well worth it. This is world class stuff. I'm so happy to finally try it.

Pour is dark reddish brown with virtually no head. Tons of sweet stale caramel in the nose, heavy on the alcohol with strong cardboard towards the back. Taste is big time sweetness with lots of dark fruits and notes of chocolate. Very syrupy with light heat, creamy feel and low carbonation.

2006 vintage.

Pours a clear dark orange with no head. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, raisins, grapes, and port wine. Taste is much the same with a nice port wine flavor on the finish and a mild alcohol burn in the throat. This beer has no real carbonation to speak of but is smooth and slightly sticky. Overall, this is a very good beer with some great, rich flavors that make it a pleasure to drink.

This is a still beer. So, of course, no head or lace. Color is a cloudy apricot amber. Aroma is a very heady blend of dark ripe fruits, caramel, malt, solvents. Flavor is super sweet, I was thinking cream sherry, but it's much sweeter, but otherwise like nose. Body is full and lush. Finish is exactly like flavor and has good length with no off notes. I do prefer barleywines to be carbonated.

This beer is great just like the others that are it's sister brews. The beer poured out as a orange like amber color with out any head on top. The smell of the beer has a light funk to it which surprised me because others weren't like that. After a little that aroma fades and the boozy sweetness starts to fill the nose. The flavors in the beer are like a mixture of honey, molasses, maple syrup a touch of berries and hints of wood. The sweetness of the beer is through the roof just like the others. The aftertaste is dry and rich with caramel like flavors. The mouthfeel is rich and smooth, no carbonation at all, it has a syrupy feel to it. Overall I couldn't be more happy to try it. I'm glad that I've finally had them all now. This is a great brew.
