Jet-black in color, this monster smells of coffee and chocolate. The taste is much of the same, with hints of creamy toffee and roasted malt. Smooth and delicious, this medium bodied ale is all about the malts, but has enough hop bitterness to be balanced.

Had this at the draught house.
I feel deprived because I have not had this beer since it has been out. I have tried all of southern star's beer pre release except this one. I have missed out.
Appearance - dark, black, tan head.
Smell - alot of smoky chocolate arises from the medium tan head that lingers on.
Mouthfeel - Smooth, choclate, smokey, a tad of subtle hops coming though. This thing is very very easy to quaff down. Be careful they say it's 9% I cannot believe it!
Southern star brewery is quickly making a name for themselves. They have again made a damn fine quality brew that is rumored to be out in cans by this summer. If this is the case then I will have a trusty 4 pk in my fridge all the time. This and (512) pecan porter are my 2 favorite beers that I can get locally. We Texans are very very lucky to have southern star! Maybe they will do a barrel aged or bourbon style of this one. Maybe a coffee version! Awesome DAVE keep cranking out the GREAT BEERS!

Such a delicious stout! It's not too bitter, not too intense "in-your-face", and yet still a satisfying +8% ABV.

Poured the darkest brown, just shy of black. A thin tan head that quickly faded to the thinnest of rings, then disappeared. Minimal , short lived lacing. Aroma of roasted malts and chocolate. Taste of chocolate , malts, a bit of coffee. A pleasant hop presence on the tongue. Medium body with medium body. The best quality of this stout is the taste. Great tasting without being overly heavy or cloying.

Appearance: Black glass fails to hold a head beyond the thinnest halo of brown. No lacing.
Aroma: Burnt grain, petrichor, rose petals.
Taste: Deep roasted barley, a bit of mineral water, fruity esters, plum.
Mouthfeel: Low carbonation, medium body.
Overall: A really nice stout. Earthy, complex, well made.

My favorite stout, and I've had a lot. Malty, chocolate and coffee but not cloying. Refreshing yet satisfying, pairs great with a pot roast and even as a substitute for Guinness in mixed drinks.

From a can produced 10/6/20. Dark brown color with a thin layer of brown head. Smells of roasted malt and chocolate. Medium body. Tastes of roasted malt, chocolate, and molasses. Nicely done

Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served a dark brown color with a tiny fizzy tan colored head. The head fades rather fast leaving almost no lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is sweet overall with a decent showing of some chocolate mixed with aromas of caramel and brown sugar. Along with these smells comes a little bit of a molasses and some light dark fruit.
Taste – The taste begins as one may expect from the nose with lots of sweeter flavors of caramel, brown sugar and molasses all mixed with a nice roasted taste and some chocolate. As the taste moves forward there are some light toast tastes as well as a bit of earthy hop, leaving one with a nice sweet and roasty taste overall.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is medium to slightly more chewy with a carbonation level that is rather low. For the style and the sweet and roasty tastes the feel is great and makes for a nice sipper.
Overall – A pretty nice stout overall. Sweeter, but balanced and very flavorful.

can poured into tulip
A: jet black body and a thick pillowy tan head with high retention that laces the glass as it eventually settles into a foamy cap with accentuated halo
S: rich coffee bean with sweet bakers chocolate and caramel roasted malt and a hint of earthy hop notes
T: follows the nose, with more coffee bean and black strap molasses shining through with a malty backbone and slight hop bitterness on the back end
F: low carbonation, medium-heavy bodied. mostly lush front with a crisp dry finish left on the tongue
Overall (personal opinion):
if you see this puppy and like a stout, just get it. this brew is a masterclass and benchmark for the style. legend.

Dark in color with a thin, tan-colored head and lacing. Aroma is of malt, cocoa, and coffee, not spectacular but not unwelcome, like a comforting fireplace. Malt comes through very strong in the taste followed by coffee, with a subtle nuttiness to it. Mouthfeel is thin and creamy, without too much carbonation. Overall, it's exactly what it describes itself as, a "stout for stout lovers" - it doesn't re-invent the wheel, but it is very good for what it is.
