Worst beer I’ve had from Southern Star. Glad I had it first in my flight of 4oz from Beers Looking at You. Gross.

L: best part. Solid light amber.

S: no good beer smells like this. I think this is the lowest rating I’ve ever given for smell. That stuff from 610 and I10 is better than this.

T: Double IPA? You’re full of poo. If you’re reading this review, there’s absolutely no way you will enjoy this beer. It would be an academic exercise to drink it. It’s not a total fail, but it won’t make your mood improve, not a micron.

F: it’s stupid that these 4 things weight equally in the BA scores. How bad does something have to be to be a 1?

O: an embarrassment to the brand. It’s barely above hate. If you want to try a zillion beers, do this one for the experience. But if you want an enjoyable beer, this isn’t it. And I only had a 4oz pour.

Poured from can into tulip, good 2 finger light tan head, good retention and lacing. Dark amberish golden in the glass, hazy but not turbid, no particles. Nose is caramel malt, pine, ripe pineapple, floral/herbal and some underlying earthy dankness. Taste follows the nose, there is sweet malt, caramel on the front, pine, pineapple, ripe mango, slight citrus/grapefruit, herbal notes and earthiness in the middle and a firm assertive bitterness on the finish. The bitterness is strong on the first couple of sips, but adjust out thru the session. Linger grapefruit pith bitterness on the finish. Nice changeup, old school WC IPA, looks like it, smells like it and taste like it. I passed a lot on this beer when it was available year round and the newer IPA's were coming out, but every now and then I like a good throw back and this one will help me go to bed in a little bit. Good beer, will probably go back and grab a pack of it vs a single

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The bee pours a clear deep orange-amber color with a one finger head of white foam. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave tons of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is strongest of a citrus aroma being a mix of grapefruit and some orange. Along with these smells comes come tropical fruit smells of tangerine and papaya as well as a decently strong showing of a caramel smell. A touch of a herbal and pine smell round it out giving a very robust smell overall.
Taste – The taste begins with a very bready malt taste mixed with a bit of the bitter grapefruit hop that was detected in the nose. At the same time there is a little bit of pine and herbal hop, which both stay rather consistent throughout much of the taste. All the while a bit of caramel and tropical fruit sweetness that is present upfront begins to fade with the grapefruit hop getting stronger and more bitter as the taste advances. At the very end the pine and herb surge with the grapefruit fading a bit, leaving one with a rather dank and malty taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the slightly thicker side with a carbonation level that is rather average. For the malty body and the dank hop that hits the tongue at the end the feel is rather good and makes for a nice hearty sipper.
Overall – Rather thick and malty with a nice dank hop hit at the end. A rather nice warming sipper.

Burnt orange in color with a light tan head that quickly dissipated to a thin ring. Pleasant but no very strong aroma: caramel & malted grain. Slightly sweet with a hint of bitter at the finish. Fairly simple but nice flavor profile, sweet malted grain. Thin with adequate carbonation. Overall, not really outstanding but very drinkable & refreshing.

Pours a clear pale amber with a beige two finger head. Density is good as well as retention. It leaves lots of sticky lacing.

Smells funky. Like mildew. Smells like wet plants. Dank? I like it just taken back a bit. Its odd. Still get the piney bitterness and caramel in there but that mildew smell kina takes center stage.

For an DIPA is malt forward. Hops is lacking and its a bit too sweet.

The feel is thick and syrupy. Carbonation is low.

This is my first let down from Southern Star. Just didn't hit the mark.

Picked up a single from Spec's in San Antonio on 4-12-17 for $1.67. No visible canning date.

Beer poured orange with a nice white head.

Nose has a decent dose of citrus going on.

Taste is old school double ipa. Heavy malt body is nicely balanced by citrus and pine hop profile. Hops and malt profile work nicely together. Definitely not showcasing the hop profiles like a lot of brewers do today.

Mouthfeel is heavy and pretty smooth.

Overall i enjoyed this brew. Definitely a value brew that is worth a shot.

12 oz. can poured into tight nonic
(2/2/2016 born on date)

L: murky orange-amber, about 60% opaque to start with (though clearing up some) with a thick head of beige foam about 1-inch thick and sticky up top; not a ton of lacing but the thick beige collar of foam is pure craft beer art; clears up quite a bit, though it's never 100% clear

S: full malt takeover ... orange, candied orange, peach, biscuit malt notes dominate; caramel when you mix it together

T: a mix of the big sweet malty nose with some leftover hop bitterness ... the bitter bite is sharp and piney despite the beer being eight months old; over time it takes on a lot of mango/caramel flavor, the mushy aging American IPA/DIPA flavor that's bleeding into barleywine territory

F: ale soft and weighty, not overly slick, loads of carbonation to move it along

O: for an eight-month-old American DIPA full of mangoey/caramel flavors (not my favorite -- I prefer grapefruit bombs), it's not half bad; the piney hop bite is impressive, and I really need to try a fresh pint of this to give it a fair shake; I bought just a four-pack, and I'm enjoying it a bit more with each can

Pours a cloudy amber with copious off white head that resolves quickly.
Smells strongly of piney, citrus hops, floral notes, sweet malts.
Tastes with grapefruit, citrus and pith forward - counter balanced by sweet malts.
Medium body with an oily quality and pleasant resin - bittersweet finish.

At first blush, I was overwhelmed by the citrus and pine heavy hop bomb that this is. . . but as it warms, it a very pleasant sipper. Enjoyed with fattier foods/cheese/bbq - well hidden abv.
Almost a tripel IPA in its intensity.
I rather enjoyed this beer - I'm not a hop head - but I can respect a quality, over hopped beer.

First thing to note is the color differences noted. I wish I could post a picture because mine is a dull cloudy/murky orange-gold. I have read "copper" "clear" "amber" ...

Anyway, it smells and tastes pretty perfume like. A lot of floral hops and a lot of malt. Some grapefruit and pineapple in there too, but more flowery. Pretty syrupy and heavy. Too much caramel malt it I would say. Fairly boozy too. Comes across more like a triple ipa to me. Reminds me of Founders Devil Dancer. Have to wonder if there are some consistency issues with this. The descriptions and scores are all over the place. So are the flavors though, so maybe not. Drinkable, but I wouldn't seek it out again.
