Hazy amber color with off-white head. Aroma has bread crust, toasted malts and a bit of brown sugar. Taste is bready and malty with some toasted notes and earthy bitterness on the finish. Medium to light body with medium plus carbonation. Overall it's a decent lager with some extra flavor.

Amber colour. Bready sweetness. Reminds me of a great kvas in my childhood.

Brown amber colour, tan head. On the nose, leather, grain, and earth. Malta but not bready flavour, and some earthy hops. Rounded mouthfeel. Smooth going down. Overall solid.

Oct. 2014: Shared 500 ml swingtop bottle at local tasting, from Getränke Hoffmann, Harrislee. Amber colour, slightly off-white head. Aroma of malts and brown bread, hints of caramel. Malty flavour, not too sweet, not too dry, hints of brown bread and caramel.

500ml bottle into a tall glass. Best before 6/10/20, so well late on this one. Oh well.
Looks pretty good in the glass. Dark copper body with a decent off white head. This persists in good form throughout leaving very interesting lacing.
Sweet malty aroma.
On tasting, a little sweet and drying. Not much else to report.
Mouth just about medium, finish quite dry.
Overall, not much going in here, but for 18 months past it's best by date, an acceptable drink.

#1829 - Blind-tasted except for the beer's name and brewery/country, zero reviews below read (yet!)...
L- Very deep amber to the point it's nearing light brown. Pours with a tiny hint of haze and a minimal, shy to form and short-lived patch of bubbles.
S- Mild, just some bready notes for me.
T- Good robust trad-style bready malts and in parallel a balancing trad hops presence. Overall it's like a trad Brit ale but both the malts and hops show themselves quite clearly.
F- Robust yet the hops are bright enough such that it doesn't feel at all heavy. The CO2 remains uninspiring in the glass - despite this being my usual/reliable, plus, nucleated glass! - yet the CO2 feels just fine in the mouth. Not quite fizzing of course but I mean clearly there and in tune with the overall style.
O- I really like this, overall it feels like a good 'ol trad ale that's been brewed for ever and the recipe hasn't been messed with. It would be interedting to do a side-by-side test vs a trad Brit ale like an Abbot or similar to help focus the differences in this one.
Review/scoring all done, now the reveal, I get to read the lables to see what I missed! -> Ok that's all in complex German but from what I can make out it's describing the specific/different process of brewing this Zwickel style beers ... open top brewing vessel, and so on...
500ml bottle BB: 08/10/2021 £3 Bought from TremblingMadness, York/UK as part of a large pick-your own consignment to London.

Really old bottle, 6 years old, poured into a pint glass. The color is dark muddy brown with a very poor almost flat head. The smell is all raisin and bran bread. The taste follows suit, with soda bread, raisins, oats, and barley all in equal measure. The mouthfeel is dissapointing, with a thin body and very poor carbonation, essentially flat.
I can tell this was a fantastic beer at one time, it just ages very poorly evidently. Wish I had a fresher bottle, but I do not blame the beer! Try it if you find it!

500ml bottle, tulip, 5/28/20 on the back label.
Medium yellow-brown, which is a bit unique, as any but the lightest beers usually tend towards orange, and lightly hazy. The head is a beaut. There was a good glugging pour that produced a dense finger of light tan head that sticks around.
Crisp, slightly sweet, old nickels, leafy hops.
Bready, slightly sweet, watery caramel, metallic and green hops. It’s like a loaf of sweet bread with a lightly herbal finish.
A bit chewy and matte from the yeast.
This is an earthy and rather complex beer. It’s hoppy yet sweet, creamy yet thin. There’s so much variation in Zwickel.
