I am a huge fan of the Original and the Zwic'l from this great brewery, so when I saw this today, I grabbed it.
Served from a flip-top bottle, pours a medium mahagony tone, nice medium thick, slightly tan head. Carbonation looks good, head is really a standout, great looking Dunkel.
Smells of bread, caramelized malts, bitter cocoa note, light coffee, hint of orange, nice background of mineral-high water tipical of the Bavarian beers, lightly sour-tart mustiness of wood, a bit rustic, yet well defined as I found in the Zwickel.
Flavor is above expectation. Bitter cocoa, coffee, dark bread, plum, orange, and brown sugar, all balanced by a a hint of mineral bitterness, and a unexpected amount of cleansing carbonation that lightens and refreshes the flavor with each sip. As the beer warms, a hint of molasses, bitter grain and sour cherry come through in a wonderfully tart sour cherry-cocoa (not sweet at all) brew that is great, with slight hint of smokiness perfect, as the weather is moving into fall temperatures.
Mouthfeel is light-medium, carbonated, lively and much better than expected. This beer is balanced, tart, medium bodied, smoky, refreshing and great here in Germany for the fall season.
I can't praise this brewery enough. I have finally found what I wanted from all 3 beers they produce. A light Pils, a sour, intruguing Zwickel, and now this Dunkel that redefines what I thought a Dunkel could be. Normally a bit too sweet for me, and not my style by far, this beer is an exception, I will buy this again. Cheers to a great new discovery.

On tap at Rattle n Hum, NYC.. A fine brew. Cool & refreshing. Slight caramel on the hoppiness. Malty fragrance. Everything in it's place & at a manageable 5.3 ABV, this fits right in with those long football 'n beer sessions. Can handle defense vs the hot wings or offense vs the less than guac. GO WHOMEVER!

this is a standout for me, one of the best examples of the style i have ever had, wonderful from the tap down at jakes brew bar in littleton. its deep red, pushing brown in color, with a nice frothy and airy tan head, looks great in the glass. awesome nose of old world german lager yeast, toasted multi-grain bread, a little caramel, a sprinkle of cocoa powder, and the dusty german malt i like so much in this kind of style. all the same in the taste, a little banana and pear fruitiness to it, oddly light for its color, delicate and nuanced, complex even, especially for the style. less sweet than others, more yeast flavor, deeply toasted on the grain, maybe a shade richer than others, but incredible drinkable with a rather light body, surging carbonation, and a pleasant lingering german grain flavor on the tongue after the swallow. honey roasted almonds come to mind, buttered toast, raisin, its awesome. feels healthy to drink this even. a lot of the german stuff doesnt get enough love, and i would put this near the top of the list. one of the best dunkels i have had in awhile.

On tap at Newhall Refinery in Newhall, CA.

Pours a hazy orange-brown with a foamy tan head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, and dark fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with toast, caramel, and dark fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of toast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Serving type: on tap.

500 ml into tulip. The beer is roughly a week past its prime (BBE date 2nd August 2010) but its quality characteristics should still be within the frame.

Pours murky dark brown body with reddish/garnet tints, topped by slowly subsiding creamy beige head that leaves stable cloth of lace. Nice and firm laces are weaved on the walls as I swirl the glass.
A doppelbock reminiscent aroma of Munich malt sweetness, chocolate, caramel and melanoidins expressed as bread crust.
Moderately but not overly sweet Munich malt flavor, chocolate and bready notes from melanoidins. Slightly acidic (not in an unpleasant way) from roasted malts yet without any burnt or bitter sensation. Occasionally slightly astringent. Lightly bitter finish from hops although the overall balance is on malty side, as it should be with the style. Soft to moderate carbonation and almost medium body of this obviously unfiltered Munich dunkel that has surpassed my expectations.

500 ml swingtop bottle, as "Bayreuther Aktien Landbier Fränkisch Dunkel", bought at Voldby Købmandsgård, Denmark. ABV is 5.3%. Dark brown colour, big to moderate off-white to beige head. Nice aroma of malts, fresh bread and fruity and floral hops. The flavour is quite fruity and refreshing for a dunkel, the malts are there, but the beer is not too sweet. Low bitterness, but scores high on drinkability.

Yeasty caramel malty smell. A beautiful copper chesnut red-brown colour against the light, with a nice creamy off-white head. Head faded fairly quickly, with some lacing on the way. Mouthfeel is nice: velvety and smoothly sparkling, warm almost. Warming from the alcohol. Taste is rich, malty, lightly burnt caramel, fruity, yet somehow 'savoury'; some hops and bubblegum yeast in the finish. It's a very satisfying beer - like a meal in a drink in terms of taste and satisfaction.

B.B. "27.05.14 0:10" (I like the attention to detail)
