I had to sip this one on a couple different occasions before I dropped the review. Upon further review it’s meh compared to the beer I generally drink. Santa Fe is solid but it’s lacking something. Finishes nutty. Not super piney or citrusy as I generally prefer. Being from New Mexico I’m biased but not enough to not be honest. 82/100

Poured from a can into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a lightly hazed golden-orange color with a one finger head of white foam. The head has a fantastic level of retention slowly fading over time to leave tons of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell -The aroma of the brew is strong of a sweet citrus smell mixed with aromas of tropical fruit as well as some grapefruit hop. The citrus hop is a nice mix of tangerine and orange while the tropical fruits are of a mango nature. Along with these smells comes a decent showing of an earthy and herbal smell.

Taste – The taste begins with a dense cracker malt flavor that has a little bit of the fruit tastes as well. The sweetness is rather light upfront, with it initially increasing in intensity only to get even weaker as the taste advances to the very end. Right from the start there is a decent showing of some dank hop of an earthy and herbal nature. A bit of grapefruit is there as well, but this hop taste dwindles while the other two hop flavors get stronger. With a touch of hay and yeast that comes at the very end, one is left with a slightly dank, and thicker, but dry taste to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is thicker and more chewy with a carbonation level that is on the slightly lower side. For the mix of flavors, the feel is pretty nice as the dankness nicely accentuates the flavors rather well.

Overall – A slightly thicker, but nice drinking slightly more dank IPA. Overall a brew that is certainly at least worth a try.

The beer pours a somewhat hazy golden amber color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is attractive as well, as I pick up sandalwood, light onion and tropical fruit. Kind of an intriguing combination of aromas. The flavor profile replicates the nose to some extent, but is a bit lighter than I was expecting. Not picking up much bitterness on the finish as well, in this fairly dry IPA. Mouthfeel is fairly light as well, especially for a 7% abv ipa. Alcohol is very well integrated into the flavor profile, so drinkability is quite good.

Nothing extraordinary here, but even so, this is an easy to enjoy and appreciate IPA.

Look: Pale, light head, some legs of alcohol when swirled

Smell: Pleasantly piney, sweet, but devolved into a smell almost of ammonia while drinking

Taste: Malty, pine flavor is the most present, not very bitter

Feel: Pretty thin and dry, decent amount of carbonation

Overall: Very tasty beer, but I won't be drinking out of a glass anymore. The smell as I drank became very offputting. Couldn't get past the scent of dank, ammonia-y cat pee.

I bought a 6-pack of cans for $7.99 +tax at my local beer emporium November 1, 2019. I didn't find an expiration/enjoy by date.

Look: cloudy; disturbing golden yellow color.
Foam: Maybe 1/4 inch.
Smell: the best thing about this brew. Nice simple pine/juniper? Wish I had this fragrance to put inside my car.
Taste: I tried this brew at 58 degrees F / 14 Celsius and I kept wishing for a warmer brew so I could taste something. On a positive note, the high alcohol content is handled well.
Mouthfeel: no comment
Overall: Let's make a "craft" beer, invest big $$ in website design and visuals, and let the money roll in !

Fantastic, classic-style IPA. The head wasn't particularly nice on my pour, but it smells and tastes exactly like what an IPA should taste like - nothing especially splashy. Definitely a west coast IPA. This one isn't overloaded on hops, though, and would make for a good "session" IPA despite its higher IBU. It'd also be a good beer for someone who isn't huge on IPAs to segue into the style. I love this beer.

12 oz can, best by 12/10/19. Pours hazy orange gold with a small creamy white head that quickly goes to a thin collar that leaves little lacing.

The aroma is biscuit malt with earthy grassy resiny hops.

The flavor is sweet fruity caramel malts with some earthiness and a big bitter green resiny hop finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, an OK IPA.

These 'classic' IPAs seem almost like a throwback these days. I get a nice citrusy and piney nose, with more of the same on the body. There's a touch more malty sweetness than I like but it's not a deal breaker. All around decent, and I'd rather have this than nothing else.

Pours a clear medium gold color with a light biscuit one finger head with impressive sheet lacing. Aroma is a bit robust with malt and citrus. Taste is similar with lightly sweet malt coming through dominantly. I find the hops a bit muddled. The finish is peppery with lingering malt.

I am not too hot for this one. I think the hot malt finish along with the muddled hops make it very average. Hey - at least it looks good :)

Bought this in Arizona. Pours a slight hazy golden brown with 2 finger head. Smells hints citrus pineapple. Tastes a juicy, piney, hoppy but not lacking balance. Alcohol is masked quite brilliantly. Mouthfeel confirms the satisfying taste of the aromas. Under the radar IPA. Worth the price of the brew.

Appearance: Pours golden with just a touch of chill haze; the head builds to a finger's height and leaves splashes of lace behind

Smell: The caramel malt tones protrude and balance the dank grapefruit and tropical fruit tones

Taste: Caramel tones forward, with the grapefruit, pomelo, apricot and guava tones; moderately bitter, through the middle, with some nut flavors in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation; could be a bit spritzier

Overall: A throwback to the IPAs we used to drink just a couple of years ago; well constructed

L - The appearance of 7k is the least impressive thing about this beer.
S - More interesting; good old school pith-pine-hops smell. Good stuff, if a little old school.
T - Even better, and doubles down on the "THIS IS AN IPA as it should be" impress: citrus, pine woods. Clean.
F - Also solid if not incredibly memorable, but the right amount of carbonation and smoothness.
O - maybe the best regular IPA in the city of Santa Fe right now. [Seek out Snowflake (D)IPA if you want something different]. Better than Happy Camper (IPA), by a long shot.

12 oz. can:

Pours golden with a thin lastihead that turns a bit bubbly, lacing sticks.

The smell is of citrus/tropical notes - grapefruit and some mango with an earthy touch - pine and some leafy grass.

The taste follows the nose with the fruitiness - grapefruit and some mango. Caramelized malt keep the hops from being raw. A touch of bitter grass and pine in the finish. Alcohol pretty well covered.

Smooth despite bitterness.

A very nice example of a hop-forward, yet balanced modern American IPA. A pleasant, enjoyable IPA!

Had a pint at the Del Charro Hotel bar while touring downtown Santa Fe on 8-24-18 for $5.50.

Beer was served golden orange with a solid white head.

Nose was light citrus, pretty nice.

Taste was biscuity caramel malt backbone with a nice use of grapefruit and mango. Finish was lightly bitter, definitely an easy drinker.

Mouthfeel was medium bodied and fairly smooth and refreshing.

Overall a nice IPA, glad i was able to try on tap.

This is my final night in New Mexico and this is probably my last beer from the Land of Enchantment for awhle. This Santa Fe option features a golden color and a bitter pine and caramel nose. I find the flavor simple but balanced and tasty. There is a bit of a nutty character in the finish. This is easy drinking for the octane, I would try this again.

Initial gut reaction from a can:

C (2.79) / AVERAGE

***
07/14/18 impression from a can:

Hop profile is fine but unimpressive. Pale malts anchor this drinkable but forgettable ale. Honeyed malt and caramalt notes bring this into maltier territory than many IPAs without adequate hop bitterness to compensate. Papaya, vague tropical fruit, floral hop notes.

Could use dialing in balance-wise. It's a tad boozy, which holds it back.

Poured into a tulip a pretty nice hazy dark orange color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy one-finger plus off-white head, which also leaves some nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, malty, with a nice citrus complex (orange, tangerine, grapefruit), pine. The taste is hoppy, malty, with a nice citrus complex (orange, tangerine, grapefruit), piney. Medium body, ABV is hidden nicely, with a nice dry/bitter finish. Overall, a pretty tasty brew.

Beer is a slightly hazy ochre. Not much of a head. Aroma is citrus with some malt and floral notes. Taste is some malt that quickly gives way to a dry, grapefruit-rind finish. Mouth feel is light. It's assertively carbonated, but not unpleasantly so. Overall, a refreshing, hop-forward, bitter-but-not-too-bitter IPA. A very solid IPA.

Type: 12-oz. can

From: Trader Joe’s in ABQ Uptown (Albuquerque), N.M.
Price: $1.34
Purchased: May 4, 2018
Consumed: May 6 2018
Reviewed as: American IPA
Misc.: No canned on date

Picked this up on a recent work trip to Albuquerque. Probably spent way too much money at a Trader Joe’s and at Jubilation Wine & Spirits. Surprisingly I had reviewed five Santa Fe Brewing beers before, ranging from a 3.29 (Happy Camper IPA) to a 4.27 (Chicken Killer Barley Wine) (#BiL). Untappd description read, “7K IPA is brewed way up in Santa Fe, NM, and is a dry, West Coast-ish style IPA with notes of grapefruit, citrus and tropical flavors. The hop profile combines Simcoe and Mosaic with Eldorado and Amarillo playing backup. On the palate, it starts with a touch of caramel malt sweetness that balances out the hops and finishes with a fruity, slightly resinous hop flavor and clean bitterness. It’s fruity and intense with a clean hop profile and leaner malt base than other IPAs. So if you’re searching for the next great IPA, just look up. Higher. No, higher. There we are.” Simcoe, Mosaic and Amarillo (and Eldorado)? Oh yeah.

Poured a medium amber semi-clear color with 2-to-3 fingers of khaki white frothy head. Some bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass at different points. World-class layered foamy lacing. World-class foamy retention. (Sight - 4.50)

Smelled dark fruit, plum, toffee, caramel, Motueka (if I didn’t know any better), papaya, spoiled orange, Simcoe, trashy Mosaic, pine and some red grapefruit. Better out of the can (as always) with mango, papaya and orange peel leading the way. (Smell - 3.75)

Taste followed the nose. Just a malt bomb, making me wonder how fresh this was. Got plum, toffee, caramel candy squares, Simcoe, papaya, mango, woody pine, orange juice and honey. (Taste - 3.50)

Medium body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Sugary, sticky finish. (Feel - 3.75)

This was a very good IPA, but too malty overall for me. (Overall - 3.75)
