Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
This is the kind of beer that gives the word "stout" a reputation. Extra generous quantities of barley malt, followed by vigorous fermentation leaves this "imperial" heavy weight with 8% alcohol A.B.V. and a body as full as chocolate bread pudding. A complimentary and complex array of bitter notes comes form potent American hops, earthy British hops, black-roasted malts and, of course, coffee. Santa Fe Brewing Company uses only top-quality ingredients like organically grown East Timor coffee beans blended with New Guinea coffee beans, locally roasted by O'hori's Coffee House. Its heavenly flavor and aroma can't be beat or imitated.

This is not subtle. It is in your face strong coffee and stout beer. I love it. Thank you Santa Fe Brewery for not wasting my time or money.

Be warned, if you down a six pack of this, you will feel no pain for awhile, but then you will go comatose for a few hours.

It pours completely black with roughly one finger worth of tan head. The aroma is of intense coffee, roasted barley, and with some nice burnt notes. The taste is bittersweet upfront with a late and prolonged bitterness much like a strong black coffee on steroids. If you love coffee then this beer is for you. Not as chewable as one would expect for an imperial stout but it definitely offers a satisfying degree of viscosity.

Pleasing coffee aroma with a shot of sweetness. Not harsh but quite smooth.
Dense tan head, dark body with red highlights.
Sweet coffee again which leaves a sense of creaminess to it as well. Moderate drying and a little less in the bitterness, but there is a nice long finish. A little shot of warmth in the gut otherwise little indication of the alcohol.
Moderate body and smooth soft feel.
This is solid. Nicely done.
Thanks to novomexicano for this fine sample.

Java Stout is a really nice beer. Lovely black color with a tan head. Great coffee smell, malty, bready? Little bit of a subdued flavor but what's there is just what the smell suggests - a nice coffee stout that doesn't overpresent itself. Refreshing, tasty, to the point. Good feel, aftertaste is just that without any negative impact on the palate. Maybe not a showy beer, but certainly a good option when it comes to value, price, and being included in a six versus just a lame four pack. Really is an enjoyable alternative to overpaying for something that only delivers sometimes. I've had Java Stout 2 or 3 times, and it's always great. Cheers

The beer pours a deep brown with a thick tan head that left a lot of patchy lacing.

The smell is tons of coffee and light roasted malts. I'm also getting some deeper char further down.

The taste follows with tons of coffee up front and some nice roasted malt for balance.

The mouthfeel is great. It's been thick and smooth. This is what I expect an 8% stout to feel like.

Overall this is a very nice beer, although the coffee is a little too burnt tasting for me.

very dark brown for the color. I could barely pick up any coffee notes in the smell and I think it smells more like your average lager, but the taste more than makes up for that with dominating coffee flavor.

I enjoyed this one. I have a soft spot for coffee beers, but this one delivered. Aroma had a good dose of coffee with a hint of alcohol and roasted grains. Full bodied with coffee on thflavor profile as well. For an eight percenter, an easy drinker. Good carbonation makes this one smooth ro ingest and digest. I call it a winner.

Another good one from Santa Fe Brewing & I do think this one would be very good with donuts,> As a matter of fact, I think I'll have one in the morning with an applesauce or apple fritter! This one really opens up as it warms, the head and lacing are very good. The 8% alcohol is present, but not overpowering. Drink on!

Pours a deep black with nice tan head and sticky lacing. Smells of coffee, dark chocolate, and malt. The taste is very good, full blast of coffee up front with a nice sugary malt blend, notes of bitter chocolate and light hops. Finish is medium with mild bite of alcohol and a lingering coffee taste. Overall this a terrific stout.
