A trademark beer of the Santa Fe Brewing Company’s master brewer, Ty Levis, the State Pen Porter has every reason to be one of his favorites. It is flavorful, swimming with notes of nuts and chocolate; it is drinkable, so drinkable that it is almost as if pint after pint were drinking itself.

Pours a dark red/brown, almost opaque. The head is medium sized and has very small carbonation bubbles, looks almost like a nitro, but it says bottle conditioned. Smells of chocolate. Taste is of coffee, chocolate, with a hint of malt sweetness. There is just a touch of earthy hops flavor, but the bitterness from the hops is there. There is also a hint of acidicness, but it isn't anything bad. A surprisingly dry beer as well. Mouthfeel is very smooth, carbonation levels are low and soft. A pretty drinkable brew, probably my favorite Santa Fe Brewing beer so far from the sampler pack.

Pours out to a clear deep Walnut near brown with a fair amount of yeast sediment forming a modest light tan head with poor retention and average lacing. Nose of baking chocolate, Black walnut. Medium bodied and moderately acidic mouthfeel. The taste opens with baking chocolate and black walnut followed by moderate roast acidity and chalk in the aftertaste. Bitterness is medium low.
An ok porter. A bit too acidic but drinkable.

in american craft brewing the porter style has tended more and more towards the robust porter, with a more bitter and roasty dark malt complexion and less of the mid range chocolates and crystals, as well as less of the old world yeast characteristics, a trend i have often found agreeable, but it is also really nice to drink what i would term a session porter. not because its low alcohol, but because its rather mild in comparison to what is happening out there in the style, and i think its mellow enough to want to drink a few of them at least, almost no roasted bitterness here at all, a little mid palate sweetness but dry at the end, and without a ton of body. i get notes of toasted chestnuts, instant chocolate milk, and faint hazelnut, english yeast, and coffee cake. its mild and autumnal and really very well balanced and built. i know this is not the kind of porter that gets headlines, but it really is an excellent example of the style, a bit of a throwback to the porters of the early american craft movement. better than many!

Poured from a can into a tulip glass. Dark brown body with small short lived head and good lacing. Nice chocolate smell. Taste of chocolate and roasted malt. Overal, a good porter.
