Style: English Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Brown Ale style originated in the pubs of England, where beer drinkers desired a beer that was both flavorful and complex, but at the same time mild enough to be a session beer. The Santa Fe Brewing Company's interpretation of this style uses a combination of high mash temperature, hard water, and low-alpha acid hops to produce a product that is both true to the style and distinctly Santa Fe. Brewing jargon aside, Santa Fe Nut Brown Ale is an easy-drinking beer, mild, smooth, and always a favorite.

My very good friend Jon Passow sent this a can of this to me in a birthday beer package, as I had my birthday a few weeks ago. Poured into one of my pint glasses , this beer pours a clear, dark copper/light brown color with a slightly tan/off-white, fluffy head that's initially well over an inch thick when first poured. Settles eventually to a solid 1/3 of an inch thick with excellent lacing and good retention. Aromas of slightly roasted, bready caramel malts along with roasted nuts and a hint of chocolate followed by some earthy hops. The taste is pretty much the same, with somewhat roasted, bready caramel and chocolate malt sweetness along with some roasted nuttiness and a nice earthy hop presence that adds just the right amount of bitterness to give this beer some balance. Has a slight crisp, mainly smooth and frothy, medium bodied mouthfeel with light to moderate carbonation. Has a clean finish and slightly dry aftertaste. A good beer here indeed that I am glad I got the chance to try.

Smooth and mellow. Good nutty flavor but was expecting a little more boldness given the "punch in the face" you get from Santa Fe's Java Stout.

A malty brown with a small nut taste in the finish and in the aftertaste.

Taste Rating in Words: Eating nuts that are sitting in water, nothing to write home about, but it is a snack.

Poured from a can into a tulip glass. Clear mahogany brown with a good but short lived head and decent lacing. Sweet nutty smell. Taste of hazelnut, caramel, and toasted malt. Good overall brown ale, maybe a bit too sweet.

In my opinion not great, but good, maybe between good and really good .Seems to be on the darker end of this style beer, but then again the lighting is poor in this place. Smell of malts and chocolate. Flavor is good and matches smell of malts and chocolate. Also, a hint of booze flavor in the background. Aftertaste is sweet. Mouthfeel is fine. Sort of reminds me of the holiday season, but then again I pick that up from beers all the time. Pairs well with peppered beef jerky. Jack Links rubber style.

I tried this beer at Georgia's in the old part of Santa Fe. It poured a clear mahogany with no head and no lace. The scent had hints of maple and nut. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink. Good sweet malt base with hints of pecan. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good. Overall it was decent.

Brown, ruby up to the light, with lots of carb rising and a quickly disappearing khaki head. The aroma is caramel malt, dirt, and yes, a nut or two. The flavor is better than the aroma. It does have a mild but nutty flavor, some caramel, some maple sweetness that lingers, none of that 'dirt' quality like you get with some English hops, and just enough bitterness to balance things out, but it is on the sweeter side overall. The feel is slightly sticky, drier on the finish, good carbonation, and medium thin body. I think this is better than a '78'. The aroma is not off putting, but, I'm not into the earthy/dirt vibe. Decent brew, if you like'em a little sweet.
