Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our 2nd place IPA. Only the Cant Dog is stonger, although arguments abound as to who is hoppier. A session IPA? NO! But you can try if you want. One of our personal favorites around the bar.

Nice change (clean and crisp, little sweeter) to the in your face IPAs, but still 9%.

Served in a tulip at the Great Lost Bear in Portland

Appearance: A one finger head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is a caramel color with great clarity and vision of bubbles coming up through the glass. Spotty lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Lemony and floral hops followed by caramel and crystal and a little alcohol in the rear too.

Taste: Same as above. Balanced with light bitterness in the rear. Very clean and straightforward flavor.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium to full bodied, light bitterness, medium carbonation, and a little booze.

Overall: Second time around with this one and enjoying it quite a bit. Will be looking for these in cans some day.

A-Pours a clear but somewhat dark amber color. Well built cap. Random lacing.

S-My first thought was how this one was mostly balanced. Sweetness with a pretty buttoned up hoppiness. Think of the standard citrus, pine, caramel and bread crew.

T-Closely approximates the nose. Both malt and hop are robust. Hops offer grass and pine and citrus. Malt relies upon a chewy caramel and muffiny pairing. A trace of alcohol.

M-Fuller bodied. Bitterness sneaks up behind the sweetness. Heats me up a little. Chewy. Medium carbonation.

O-A fairly pedestrian DIPA that reminds me of DIPAs past rather than DIPAs present. Still happy with the pint.

I enjoyed this one at the Great Lost Bear in Portland, in a snifter.

For an IPA, this was considerably malty, which I like. It still had the presence of hops, but without the bitterness.

This is one that I'll seek out and enjoy in the future! In fact, I'll probably head up the coast of Maine to Belfast this summer, and enjoy it straight from the barrel!!
