Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 14.80%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
A truly indulgent creation that brings together ingredients from some of our favorite local craftsmen. It began as a single barrel of our Pugachev's Cobra, specially aged in a 25 year bourbon barrel for 14 months. Into this barrel went single-origin cacao nibs from Parliament Chocolate, and locally roasted coffee beans from Augie's Coffee, both located here in Redlands. A heap of lactose sugar tops Mocha off, adding body and sweetness for a final layer of decadence

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

2014 Bottle

A: Chocolate dark roasted malts, followed by vanilla, bourbon, with light coffee, oak, and booze.

A: Black color, opaque, with almost no head at all.

T: Rich bittersweet chocolate, moderate vanilla, lightly sweet, with light coffee and oak, light roast bitterness with a boozy finish.

M: Full bodied, moderately light carbonation, silky mouth-feel with light alcoholic warmth.

O: Great; the beer has a great rich chocolate character that compliments the accompanying coffee and bourbon.

Bottle #13/400, shared with friends at Big Grove in Solon IA. Pours a black with minimal head. The smell is a slight chocolate with bourbon mixed in. The taste is what really seals the deal on this beer for me. It has a great initial taste of mocha. Not an overly sugary chocolate bomb mind you, just a well made mocha. There is a bittersweet chocolate that is smooth and rich that blends with a coffee flavor to create the mocha taste. The barrel does not overwhelm the delicate flavor profile either. There is no alcohol on the palate either. A fine beer!

Thanks to ChewyLewy for sharing this one at the LA Beer Talk bottle share.

Bottled 12/2014. Bottle # 128/400.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that fades to nothing. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, coffee bean, vanilla, bourbon, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa powder, coffee bean, bourbon, and wood flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast and wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty, but the aromas on this one are much better to me.

Serving type: bottle.

Bottle 369/400

Pour - Thin tan head that quickly dissipates. Pours heavier than your average stouts, but thinner than Assassin or similar beers. Not much carbonation on the pour

Smell - Chocolate up front which lends way to a coffee and powdered sugar. A bit of bourbon, but it is not nearly as dominating on this as it is on the royale nose.

Taste - Lot of sugar / sweetness to the beer. Smoother than Royale and doesn't have as much of a bourbon kick. Chocolate brownie covered in powder sugar is what it almost reminds me of. Coffee isn't as strong as it is on the nose which makes me wonder how this one ages compared to BCBCs.

Feel - thick at first sip, but it seems to dissipate due to the oiliness of the beer. Not much carbonation, but it is smooth.

Overall a great beer. The oiliness of the mouthfeel is a bit of a drawback for me along with the coffee not being overly prominent on the taste. Maybe its just this bottle? Drinks easy for nearly 15% abv and smoother than Royale. However, I prefer Royale slightly more over this as Royale didn't seem to have the greasiness that mocha has even though the bourbon is a bit harsher on Royale. Nice job overall. Curious to hear how prominent the coffee is in future reviews. Wish it was as strong as the nose.

Waxed 11.2oz bottle into a snifter. Bottle 182/400. Thanks Keith

Dark black pour, thick creamy head. Very rich chocolate on the nose. Taste is super thick and an explosion of marshmallow chocolate coats your taste buds.Terrific. Lingering chocolate bitterness on the finish. Lovely RIS.

Smell of chocolate covered espresso beans and powdered sugar.... thick, oily mouthfeel brimming with mocha, cold coffee, and molasses... similar to bcs but smoother and amped up flavors!! Bottle # 129/400, (12/2014)

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep black body. Almost no head. Nothing after a few minutes.

Smell - Sweet caramel. Bourbon. Coffee. Fudgy as hell. Boozy too.

Taste - Sweet up front. Chocolate. Caramel and fudge. Bourbon. Very sweet. Coffee finally comes through in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Heavy. Very heavy. Low carbonation.

Overall - This is excellent, but doesn't quite live up to Royale.
