Barrel Roll: LavalBarrel Roll: Laval
Notes: Laval, the newest Barrel Roll release has emerged from nine months in the cask! Double Cream Stout aged in bourbon and brandy barrels. Gustav de Laval perfected the first hand cranked centrifugal milk-cream separator and we believe he would be inspired by this beer’s color, rich, full-bodied silkiness and creamy tan head. Aromas of both bourbon and brandy, flavors of chocolate, caramel and sweet cherries are prominent.

On tap in Sacramento ,pours dark like used motor oil with short ring of bubbly head. Nose is dark roasty sweetness and boozy as hell.Tastes like molasses and alcohol.. Not sure how old this is or if it's supposed to taste like this ,but it is harsh AF in the alcohol department and really sweet. Regardless, I sipped it until it was gone.

Poured into a Darkstar November glass. Color is deep dark brown with the thinnest espresso head.
Nose is brandy-covered cherry vanilla ice cream. Nice, rich mouthfeel, but not too heavy. Palate starts with vanilla creme and sweet cherry, with milk chocolate coming next, and finishing with oak and a hint of smoke. Very nice; I didn’t have it fresh, but seems to be holding up well.

Thanks to the incomparable Ungertaker for this 750ML bottle from October 2016. Another olde schoole parchment-style label, corked & caged to contain the demons within. Split with my wife.

The pour is black, with a head that’s harder to find than Sarah Huckabee Sander’s integrity. The nose is all brandy: fruity, cherry, alcoholic brandy. Not bad.

Barrel Roll: Laval. It’s a little known fact that “laval” is an ancient Sumerian word for “blowing over the limit from one glass”. Holy isopropyl. Alcohol gang-bangs my tongue & slips down to warm my belly. As goes the nose; so the taste. The brandy is on top, & I should have poured this one into my snifter, put on my bobbies, & lit the old flu. Everything else is in trace amounts & subservient: vanilla, sharp oak, chocolate, with a finish of heavy malt sweetness. Thiqq. Happy to have half the bomber & could have a quarter of a slop bucket, happily.

Brandy, heat, malt. There are worse things…like dentists. Who would not approve of this massively sweet brew. Simple, direct, & excellent.

750ml cork and caged bottle, served in a snifter glass. Dark black body, one finger mocha head, good retention and bits of lacing. Smell is rich milk chocolate, oak and vanillin, bourbon and a trace amount of green apple, earth and cocoa. Flavour is impressively rich; lots going on here but well-integrated. The milk chocolate is strong here, but with a nice cocoa and a bit of dark chocolate mingled with green apple. Bourbon and vanillin finishes things off. Smooth body, medium, good carbonation, lots of flavour lingering on the backend, not hot by any means.

Serving type: 750 ml bottle split between me and the finaceé

Pours an absolutely black hole black. Smell is of intense milk chocoalte, sweet coffee, along with great aromas of bourbon and brandy. Taste reflects the smell beautifully. Initial taste of bourbon along milk chocolate sweetness along with brandy sweetness, with a slight fruit sweetness as well. Feel is thick, luscious (we added a fair amount of lactose to this), with just enough carbonation. Overall, this is a great barrel aged imperial milk stout. Would not recommend aging this, this is best drunk fresh.

Poured from fridge temp into a long Xocoveza glass. Smell was cherry, brandy, and bourbon. Really nice and sweet. Taste follows the nose, but much more barrel comes through. Wow - nice complex mix. Incredibly smooth, lots of cherry and blackberry. The brandy is awesome. The rich malts from the cream stout are amazing. Overall, an amazing beer with a thick creamy mouthfeel.

Bottle #107 /2100. Pitch black with a good fluffy tan head. Smells of chocolate, marshmallow, bourbon, and a hint of oak. Taste follows without being overly sweet as one would imagine, but this is definitely a dessert beer! The texture is amazing...so creamy, velvety and smooth. Overall, this is a wonderful beer, and my favorite of the Barrel Roll series yet! Cheers!
