Pours a clear gold, a little darker than expected, with a white head that dissipates completely. Disappointing start. Smells decent enough; Noble spicy and earthy hops, mild sweet biscuit. Flavor is much the same, very balanced, light feeling along with a dry finish. Overall, this is a pretty good US interpretation of a classic Helles, and easy enough to enjoy over the hot summer months. Prost!

Easy drinking Helles, now apparently a summer seasonal. Not memorable, but pleasant enough on a hot day. A little harsher and less rounded than the German benchmarks for the style.

Serving type: 12 oz bottle into a pilsner glass.

Pours a bright straw yellow color. An aggressive pour yielded about three plus fingers of head. Spider like lacing on the way down. Aroma is light malt, grass clippings, and subtle spicy noble hop. Taste reflects the smell. Spicy noble hops lead into a bit of hoppy grass clipping that finishes cleanly without a lingering bitterness. Feel is light, amply carbonated, drinks easily. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that really suits the Southern California heat.

Appearance: Pours slightly hazy, the liquid a goldenstraw color; not much of a head though there are some clumps of foam that stick

Smell: Bready aromatics; little hop presence

Taste: Bready and slightly grassy, up front, with an underlying, though subtle, sweetness

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with moderate carbonation

Overall: Watery and forgettable

Light grain aroma, similar taste. Not as crisp or refreshing as I'd hoped. Rating would increase as the temperature rose. Good summer beer.

Like stated below from BA Mag, really missing that distinct german quality to make this a Helles Lager. I enjoy the beer but rating this on style, it falls short in unique flavor. Very clean and bright but boring.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #73 (Feb 2013):

Although the idea behind a Helles Lager is that it’s “lighter” than other German lager styles, this one is perhaps a bit too light. The lack of a malt backbone allows biscuity flavors to dominate and leave the palate with an unpleasant tannic linger. No distinct hop character either. Basically, it’s missing the trademarks of this classic German style.

STYLE: Munich Helles Lager
ABV: 4.3%
AVAILABILITY: Year-round

LOOK: Bright golden, lively, creamy white lacing

SMELL: Bready, light floral

TASTE: Light bodied, watery, biscuity malts, hay, faint citric, hint of grape, dry, tannic

Clean, light lager with biscuit malt flavor. Easy drinking and better tasting than many big brewery lagers. Served on tap - minimal head and no lacing.
