Tasted at the brewery in Nov 2014

Overall impression: watery; forgettable; served too cold.

On nitro tap at Hangar 24 Brewery in Redlands, CA.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy khaki head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and some nutty aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and slight coffee flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that with some solid roasty aromas and flavors.

On nitro at Hangar 24

A: The beer pours almost black in color with a dense, creamy tan head.

S: Quite heavy on the roasted malts. There's a nice earthy hop character and plenty of coffee to it as well. Dark chocolate along with some molasses and toffee.

T: Very, very roasty with a mild acidity to it. Quite earthy with some coffee and coffee grounds flavor. Fairly bitter, which is probably from all the roast. Dark chocolate adds a little bit to that as well.

M: Medium in body with the usual creamy and smooth carbonation of nitrogen.

O: Really easy to drink. The flavor is solid and so is the nose, and at less than 5%, one that won't knock you out.

Someone got a little overzealous in trying to add this beer before anyone else. This is made from the second runnings of the next Barrel Roll beer, which will be some crazy 14-15% RIS in bourbon barrels. And it has some equally crazy Russian name (Pugachev's Cobra). So either American Stout or English Stout would work better than Irish Stout but whatever.

Sampled 4/2/2011 at the brewery.

Pours black, no light shining through the pint glass, silky brown head, good lacing and retention, but then it's on nitro so that isn't fair.

Aroma is roasty and acrid but also chocolatey. Pretty simple.

Flavor is very roasty and acidic but it has enough chocolate sweetness to sort of balance that out. High bitterness along with toffee and burnt flavors make themselves known. I suppose the amount of roast MIGHT push someoen to call this an Irish Stout but I still think American Stout works better here.

Body is medium. Surprisingly drinkable for how much roast is in this. As a side note I think using a lot of roast may cover up the crazy abv and the inevitable oxidation from barrel aging of the RIS.
